Paramount brings Rango back to theaters following Oscar nomination

Jan. 24, 2012by: Alex Riviello

Following its nomination for Best Animated Feature Film, Paramount has decided to re-release RANGO to theaters for a one-week engagement. Sadly, it's only in one theater, the ArcLight Hollywood in LA.

Wish it were a little wider, as I missed it the first time around. But of course, it's widely available on dvd, blu and digital download right now.

The incomparable Johnny Depp voices Rango, a chameleon living as an ordinary family pet who dreams of being a fearless hero and is challenged to become just that when he inadvertently becomes the sheriff of a lawless desert town called Dirt. Story by John Logan Gore Verbinski and James Ward Byrkit, Written by John Logan, Directed by Gore Verbinski, the visionary behind the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Rango delighted audiences of all ages, earning more than $230 million worldwide. The film also features the voices of Isla Fisher, Abigail Breslin, Alfred Molina, Bill Nighy, Ned Beatty, Harry Dean Stanton, Ray Winstone and Timothy Olyphant.

Since RANGO is going against PUSS IN BOOTS, A CAT IN PARIS, CHICO & RITA and KUNG FU PANDA 2, I'd say it was a shoe-in for the win, but with TOY STORY 3's upset over the far superior HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON last year all bets are off.

Rango Rocks!

This one is definitely a winner even though I haven't seen Puss In Boots yet.

Wait, hold the fuck up

I don't know who you are Mr. Alex Riviello... But "Toy Story 3" is an all-out masterpiece in every sense. By far one of the greatest films ever made. "How to Train Your Dragon" was a cute and serviceable family film. Anyway, I like "Rango," but I don't get this.

What?

I really hope you are joking, but even if you are serious and consider Dragon a better film....absolutely no one on the face of the Earth would consider TS3's win an "upset".

Rango out-Pixar'd Pixar this year. I have no Idea about two of the nominees (ever since Triplets of Belville lost I've been waiting for an indie to come and steal the statue), but it's up against a pair of successful sequels. While I disagree on the Toy Story 3 comment, sometimes a box-office hit blinds judges to actual quality (actually, oftentimes). Just look at last year's Best Picture. Not complaining on the main, but The King's Speech did not deserve Best Picture AND Best Director, though

Rango is a great film, and with

Arthur Christmas and Winnie the Pooh out of the way, it's a lock for the Oscar.

But How to Train Your Dragon better than Toy Story 3? How to Train Your Dragon's a fine film, probably the best DreamWorks Animation's ever produced, but I saw hardened movie critics crying their eyes out at the last scene in Toy Story 3. HtTYD never got that kind of reaction.

yeah actually, it did inspire passionate emotions like ts3. the flying scenes of the boy and his dragon...were exhilarating and jaw-dropping, and when they first meet in the woods, who could forget when hiccup goes to reluctantly touch toothless the dragon, but toothless beats him to the punch and pushes his head into hiccup's hand. tears, man, tears

Did I miss something? Where's The Adventures of Tin Tin? Did it miss a deadline or something?

Thats exactly how I felt when Surf's Up was shortlisted instead of Beowulf.

worse category

i havent heard of "Cat in Paris" or "Chico and Rita" so i dont have a beef with them. But its a shock Tintin didnt get it. I was really hoping Winnie the Pooh would be nominated but it didnt have any support. And i know i'm a lone wolf thinking this but Cars 2 shouldve also been there.
Kung-fu Panda 2 was the exact same as the first. and Rango was incredibly dull, i nominated it for most overrated movie for the Schmoes, can't wait for those to come out. (didn't see Puss and Boots but that

Lousy, lazy film. Hell, it's not even really a film - it's just a loosely assembled sequence of "homages" to much better films. Beautifully animated pastiche with some shoddy voice work (I'm looking at you, Timothy Olyphant and Isla Fisher), shoddy comic timing, and even shoddier plotting. Overrated dreck.

Timothy Olyphant did great voice work in this film. He sounded JUST LIKE Clint Eastwood. Which is hard to pull off accurately.

Disappointments

At least Rango was more visually inspired for an American production. It's a real shame though that more times then not Japan doesn't have a contender let alone a winner unless Miyazaki's in the chair. Miyazaki is one of the, if not THE, greatest living animation directors out there and there are LOADS of incredible animated films from Japan that blow the rest of the world's contributions out of the water. It reveals how utterly removed the Academy is from everything outside of their little

Miyazaki is one of the, if not THE, greatest living animation directors out there and there are LOADS of incredible animated films from Japan that blow the rest of the world's contributions out of the water. It reveals how utterly removed the Academy is from everything outside of their little bubble and it sucks because this event could be used to help encourage the average moviegoer to try something new and think outside the box.

You wanna see an animated film that craps on the nominations from this year? Check out Makoto Shinkai's new film and get back to me. Kung Fu Panda? Puss in Boots? Is this the best they can come up with?

Yep, you heard it here

How To Train Your Dragon is far and away one of Dreamworks' best animated movies (which is saying a lot because they have a lot of good ones), and a big thank you to Alex Riviello for not being afraid to admit on this site that it was so much better than TS3. Dixar may have finally lost that aura of invincibility. And DWA seems to be harnessing its better instincts and letting the frivolity and mediocrity of past efforts become lessons learned. Paramount has a good shot with Rango, but Kung Fu

a fact, is when you get hit by a rock in the head and you say IT HURTS. saying that the dragon movie is far better than Toy Story 3 is not a fact, just an expression of your preferences...

Rango was a fine and fun film. I haven't seen the foreign noms but out of the Americans Rango should win.
As for HTTRD. It was amusing at best. Yes, I saw it in 3D. IMAX 3D even, and the flight scenes were neat, but overall it was still just OK. Toy Story 3 on the other hand made me cry like a bewildered grown man.

"Rango" is the worst film I have ever seen. I am not trolling. I hated every goddamned second of that atrocity.

On a separate note, while you may have preferred "HTTYD" (one of Dreamworks only good animated films) over "TS3", and that is entirely fine, but to say that "TS3" winning was an 'upset' or was somehow a surprise is just plain being retarded.
