Paramount gives A Quiet Place sequel a 2020 release & pushes back Top Gun 2

In addition to receiving widespread acclaim from critics, John Krasinski's A QUIET PLACE also became a major box-office success, grossing $332 million worldwide on a budget of between $17-21 million. Naturally, talk of a sequel began almost immediately with Paramount Pictures CEO Jim Gianopulos confirming during CinemaCon that they were in the process of developing a follow-up. John Krasinski is currently in the process of writing the script and although no director has been attached just yet, Paramount has already given the QUIET PLACE sequel a release date of May 15, 2020.

Just last month, A QUIET PLACE producer Andrew Form said that although everyone involved was interested in a sequel, they weren't about to rush into it. "We’re lucky on this one. I’ve had movies where the studio says to you, ‘Here’s your date. Let’s go!’ and on this one we’re not rushing anything, which is amazing," Form said. "So we’re gonna take our time, we’re gonna figure out where to go, but there is no rush on it and we’re just starting to talk about it. We’re figuring out what everyone’s involvement’s gonna be and what the actual next movie’s gonna be. The first one is so special to us that we really want to take our time with this and not rush anything."

Paramount also announced several other new release dates, including that they will be pushing TOP GUN: MAVERICK from July 12, 2019 back to June 26, 2020. That's quite the delay, but Deadline has heard that the additional time will "allow the production to work out all the complex, incredible flight sequences." Take all the time you need. The TOP GUN sequel is slated to be helmed by Joseph Kosinski (ONLY THE BRAVE) and will find Tom Cruise serving as a mentor to a new generation of U.S. Navy fighter pilots, while also supposedly tackling issues relating to drone warfare. Cruise has teased that like the first film, the sequel will be a competition film, but with a progression for the character of Maverick. Miles Teller, Glen Powell, Jennifer Connelly, Val Kilmer, Jon Hamm, Ed Harris, and more will also be starring in the sequel.

Paramount also shuffled several other films around slightly, moving SONIC THE HEDGEHOG from November 15, 2019 to November 8, 2019 and the UNTITLED TERMINATOR PROJECT from November 22, 2018 to November 15, 2018. So there you have it; our wait for TOP GUN: MAVERICK will be a little longer than we thought and the sequel to A QUIET PLACE seems to be moving forward, whether we want it or not.
