Paramount is interested in Attack the Block director Joe Cornish for Star Trek 3

Nov. 4, 2013by: Jesse Giroux

I can't lie: this news has me very excited. Deadline is reporting that Paramount is currently courting ATTACK THE BLOCK director Joe Cornish for STAR TREK 3. The site has learned that the studio is very high on Cornish directing a third film, but no offer has been made yet by Paramount. Deadline also says the studio wants to start filming the new movie by summer of 2014. Empire claims Paramount has previously shown interest in Cornish directing the next STAR TREK film, and although he did turn the job down when it was offered before, the studio still considers Joe Cornish to be their top choice at this time.

Joe Cornish has been attached to several projects since ATTACK THE BLOCK came out in 2011 (including an adaptation of the novel Snow Crash), but this would be the biggest one yet for the director. If it's a gig he's turned down before though, is it something he's even interested in? I, for one, would love to see Joe Cornish direct a new STAR TREK movie. ATTACK THE BLOCK was one of my favorite movies of 2011, and I think Cornish would do an excellent job with STAR TREK. I'm a little surprised he hasn't directed anything since ATTACK THE BLOCK considering how well it was received. But people certainly noticed his work on that film, and I would be very happy with him behind the camera for the next STAR TREK movie.

If STAR TREK 3 (or whatever it ends up being called) starts filming this summer, there's a good chance it'll be released sometime in 2016.

Extra Tidbit: Joe Cornish also directed the documentary on Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost's US press tour for HOT FUZZ called Fuzzball Rally.

End of Lens Flare

People will be able to see all the scenes again. I am glad that Abrams admittded to his addiction and like Bond should reinvigorate with new directors to give energy to returning casts.

No offense to the rebooted Trek franchise and he could do well with it, but screw Trek and do Snow Crash!!!

Hell to the yes!

I also loved ATTACK THE BLOCK and I'd love to see Joe Cornish do a STAR TREK film. However, if he wants to be Neill Blomkamp and work on his own stuff, I'd be fine with that too. I'd certainly love to see his version of SNOW CRASH.

Would Rather See Him Launch Something New...

I think Joe Cornish's talents would be wasted here, he has an original creativity that would be wasted if having to just reiterate the style set by Abrams, Guardians of the Galaxy would have been perfect for him, I would like to see him maybe go after Preacher for an adaptation on either HBO or as a movie, something like that.

Can do better than Hood rats in space.

Couldn't get into "Attack" ghetto characters were annoying caricatures for me.
Did anybody catch the fact that the aliens pattern and reasons for being on the Block were the exact same the Ghetto kids got there.... "Thanks mum."

Forget Abrams, he has his hands full with Star Wars for the long haul. I think a bunch of people on here mentioned this, ElderPredator especially one of them. Great news for this director, hopefully he has some good ideas on the third picture.

Even though I would love to see Abrams back to actually finish his trilogy, I would be perfectly happy with Joe Cornish. Maybe reunite Frost and Pegg in a scene or two.

This would work. A fellow schmoe suggested Nick Frost for Mudd; perhaps Cornish will be able to reunite Pegg and Frost in the NuTrek universe! After all, Mudd was alluded to in Into Darkness, there was mention of a "Mudd incident".
