Paramount, Lionsgate and MGM add films to Netflix streaming

08.10.2010

Looking to fortify their catalog of recent movies that can be watched instantly through their online streaming service, Netflix has struck a $1 billion deal with Paramount, Lionsgate and MGM to bring their new releases to subscribers. You can currently get catalog titles from all three studios, but Netflix wanted newer movies sooner. Under the terms of the deal, all three studios will provide new releases to Netflix for online streaming just three months after they debut on pay TV services like HBO or Showtime.

One of the big gets under the deal, which will begin on September 1st, will be IRON MAN 2, a film that previously may have taken years to show up on Netflix's "Watch Instantly." But now, with a DVD release this September, it looks to be available to stream sometime in early 2011.

While this is a major step in proving that online streaming is a viable way for mainstream audiences (and not just the tech-savvy) to watch movies, Netflix isn't satisfied. They're still looking to lock up deals with HBO and Showtime to bring some of their original programming to their service.

Do you use Netflix's service? And if so, do you use it via your laptop or through a set-top box like Xbox Live or PSN?

Extra Tidbit: Look for HOT TUB TIME MACHINE to be available later this year as well.

Better idea MGM...

How about you get your act together, get some new executives/chiefs that aren't going to fuck things up and stop threatening the death of beloved franchises. I think that's a much more important task to tackle than Netflix.

netflix: more addicting than heroin

I love my netflix account, saves me money on Box Sets, no late fees, and instant view has only gotten better since it started.

I stream netflix through my PS3. I've been a member couple months now and love it. I stream tons of tv shows I would never normally watch cuz of either time or I wont buy the box sets. PLus tons of treasures I've found that I never would have normally gone out of my to watch. Rampage is just such an example. I use the dvd part to keep up to speed on new releases so I dont mind the wait for streaming of new stuff.

I have it and I usually stream through my xbox360. the only thing I don't like about it, is that they put a time limit on the availability of a lot of there streamed movies. I think that when they add a movie to their stream catalog, it should remain there.

Having it on the family 360 is the main reason we dropped cable. By the time we get through all of those seasons of Rescue Me, Nip/Tuck, Bones, 24, Wire in the Blood and Stargate Atlantis, there will be a new boatload of stuff to watch. The only drawback is that there are no options for subtitles.

As anyone stopped to wonder...

....that the reason MGM is backrupt is because they keep giving the rights to all their goddamn movies away? You can see an MGM film on literally ANY channel.

Please get a deal with HBO! I'm dying to catch up on all the HBO shows I've missed.

Thats cool and all, but even sooner would be better. Oh well. As for HBO and Showtime, well I think they already have a deal with showtime, since I have seen dexter on there. They also have an even better deal with Starz. All shows that are airing on Starz can be watched on Netflix. So say Iron Man 2 premiers on Starz, then it will be available on Netflix up to a week earlier than its premier. Also any starz originals can be seen on netflix the same day as it airs. I watch my netflix through

Netflix is amazing

In 5 years, when Blu-Ray and DVD are obsolete, Netflix will be a juggernaut (could be good or bad), and their service will set the stage for how cable/dish TV will change.

Netflix is awesome!`

the selection right now is such that there is ALWAYS something good to watch streaming if you want to. This only sweetens the pot! I watch Netflix through my laptop and also through my Xbox on my TV. I LOVE NETFLIX

I actually have 5 ways now to stream Netflix for instant viewing (PC,Xbox360,PS3,Sony Blu-Ray player and my WDTV Live Plus server). Mainly though I watch it through the WDTV Live Plus server because it makes it easier to switch between the stored DVD's, Netflix and YouTube. My biggest complaint with the service was always lack of new titles (we get some thanks to STARZ).

I'm still not sold...

3 months after its on HBO, your looking at 6 months to a year, after its in theaters, how could that be considered new release? Netflix is not all that, I had it for a year, but switched to Blockbuster, $11 a month, 5 in store exchanges, and pretty much any movie I want. My only problom with BB, is now that everyone has switched to Netflix, any movie I want is in store, and I can't decide which to get now. I don't have to keep changing my que like I did with Netflix. And the streaming stinks

And the streaming stinks with Netflix, the only good thing to stream, was old episodes of Angel and Buffy, and Superbad.... If BB would add free streaming, they would actually be the shit, and people would come back.

I'd be hard-pressed to even FIND a Blockbuster store for exchanges. There is no point even criticizing the Netflix streaming, either. You can get any new release sent to you via mail. The streaming is just a very nice bonus, especially now.
