Paramount may distribute Terminator 5 with filming eyed to begin in 2014

Jun. 12, 2013by: Alex Maidy

Arnold Schwarzenegger himself declared that TERMINATOR 5 was coming soon and now it appears closer than ever. The Wrap is reporting that Paramount Pictures is close to getting distribution rights for TERMINATOR 5 and beyond for Megan Ellison's Annapurna Pictures and David Ellison's Skydance Productions.

This comes on the cusp of Justin Lin backing out of directing FAST AND FURIOUS 7, just in time to possibly jump back into directing the next TERMINATOR movie, a film he was linked to a couple of years ago. Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier were brought on to write the screenplay back in January and beyond Schwarzenegger's involvement not much else is known. If Paramount does provide the backing to make the film, I would expect more announcements of cast and crew very soon.

The Ellisons bought the rights to THE TERMINATOR back in 2011 for $20 million with an eye to get as many films produced between now and 2019 when the rights to the characters and franchise revert to James Cameron. The most recent entry in the series was TERMINATOR: SALVATION which disappointed but still grossed over $350 million worldwide. It is unknown if the fifth film will be a sequel to SALVATION or take the franchise in a different direction.

Do you think Justin Lin is still the right choice for TERMINATOR 5?

I don't know how I feel about Justin Lin directing but I'm not opposed to it. As far as the movie itself, I am ready for it. I enjoyed Salvation and they didn't ignore the details from RotM while making Salvation so I think that regardless of how people felt about salvation they need to acknowledge the events and move forward. I also think they need to incorporate Schwarzenegger as a human in the resistance that was use by the machines as the template for the T-800 before he was able to escape.

Also get Anton Yelchin back as Kyle and follow the further adventures of John and Kyle throughout the movies they wish to make culminating in the death of John and Kyle and 2 T-800s being sent back in time to 1984, 1995, and 2003 respectively.

I have no problem with Arnold coming back as a Terminator again in the 5th film. The age isn't really an issue- he is a cyborg, so they could simply explain the aged exterior by stating something along the lines of, "he looks older to be less conspicuous, and draw less attention to himself". When you think about it, it'd be better for the terminator to NOT look like a hulking, giant, virile man.

I'd Prefer If they Just Stopped...

One of things I loved about the first movie waaaayyyy back in 1984 (yes, I'm old) was listening to Kyle Reese describe the world after the war, and just trying to imagine it all. They did show (as best they could) the post nuclear apocalypse world a little bit, but mostly it was him talking about it that made it so interesting and compelling. The more I actually see of that world in modern films, the more it becomes disappointing and generally contorted. I think they should leave well enough

I think they should leave well enough alone and find some other great 1980's movie to make waaaayyy too many sequels of ...(When is Die Hard 6 anyways?)

They can make the future anything they want because Kyle tells Sarah that he is from one possible future. They know that anything they do could be altering the future that he is from.

If they have Arnold back as a Human character and a fight between him and T-800 of his version, I'm game.

I'm not sure how this is going to happen, I mean after T3 and Salvation, the continuity is pretty much fucked.

They've lost all of the key actors two or three times over and then utterly ruined the one movie they did based in the future war...the future war that already had such a fantastic aesthetic set out for it in the first two (even third) movie.

This franchise is ballsed up beyond repair, surely? Had T3 and 4 gotten it right, this franchise could've wrapped back round perfectly to

Salvation was okay... certainly better than 3. If Lin can spread some of his Fast and Furious magic over this... the good times might come back to this franchise too... so I'm hopeful. As for blknge89's comment, "Kyle Reese, Sarah Connor and John Connor suffered and fought for nothing once Terminator 3 was released", that doesn't bother me - didn't Arnolds character say something along the lines... that you can't really change the future - they just delayed it. It made sense to me. Kinda

Kinda when Guy Pearce's character saves his fiance from being murdered in The Time Machine only to have her killed by something he prevented in the original timeline but didnt this time around. The future is ever a devious thing dont mess with it yo!

Kyle Reese, Sarah Connor and John Connor suffered and fought for nothing once Terminator 3 was released, no other films have ever seen the same level of disgrace that has been done to this series. Move on people.

The series could never have moved forward if the machines had never took over.

Continuity no issue

The Terminator universe is bigger than the continuity of the film story arch. The new film doesn't require it to be linear to the previous films and as I've mentioned before with Arnold being the age he is it would be far better to see him in a human role and have the film set in the early period of the war against the machines. Ultimately Arnie is the human the machines will use as their basis for the human Terminator look and Arnie is a commander of one of the Rebellion groups. There's still

There's still potential for a great new action film to be part of the franchise.

All I want to see is a band of brothers style of Terminator movie. Set around a group of soldiers and the struggles with the war. John Conner doesn't even have to be the main character, he can just have a supporting role. And how are they gonna explain Schwarzenegger's part in this film anyways?

I hope they make Schwartzenegger a human character this time around leading a rebellious group during the war. That would be cool to see.

Also, I wonder who they will get to play John Connor this time. I doubt Bale will come back.

Hated the last one. Such a circle jerk. Hoping this one focuses on the survival of the human race against the machines, and not cameos and gimmicks.

The third once was sooo bad, and Salvation was a bit better but not much. If you're going to do a fifth Terminator. Make it right and end it there.
