Paranormal Activity director teams with Mel Gibson to scare you

11.08.2010

Oren Peli's long-awaited (?) follow-up to PARANORMAL ACTIVITY, AREA 51, hasn't hit theaters yet but the director is already turning his attention to his latest project. Peli has signed on to direct the thriller ELIZA GRAVES based on a short story by Edgar Allen Poe. An adaptation of GRAVES has been in the works since 2001 and at various times has had Johnny Depp, Heath Ledger and Natalie Portman attached to star (at this point none of those names are attached to the film).

Mel Gibson is producing the film but he's been involved with the production since its early days and it's unclear exactly how involved he is with the current iteration of the project.

The film follows a recent Harvard grad who travels to Maine for a residency at psychiatric hospital. Shortly after arriving he discovers that the patients have taken over and are disguising themselves as the staff. (The inmates are running the asylum! Get it!)

No word on when exactly filming might begin or if Peli will return to any of the "found footage" tricks he used in both PARANORMAL and AREA 51.

Good Director?

The fact that I see people saying this guy is a great director is hilarious.

Ever hear about the guys who made The Blair Witch Project? Exactly.

Let's let the guy come out with another flick, before we anoint him as a good director as his first film was anything but well directed.

The only thing that makes Paranormal Activity scary or affecting is the sound design. Think about it. There's nothing scary about the film besides that, and I promise you that was something that improved

It's rare when a brief plot synopsis gets me excited. This sounds like it could be amazing, if pulled off right.

Sounds good. For some reason, I get a Batman Asylum feeling. For the lead, since he can't be too old since he is a recent graduate, I suggest Joseph Gordon Levitt.

1--Good director.

2--Good star, and producer I guess.

3--Edgar Allen Poe? SOLD!

As my biases are fizzling into defenses over Mr. Gibson, am I hip to this news? F*CK YEAH I am!

Uh oh Skellington didn't like Paranormal Activity so he's going to disregard the fact that the writer/director has any talent. He didn't make an indie film that got requested across the entire nation and received critical acclaim because he is untalented, did he? Huh?

Never said he was untalented, just said you cant say a guy is a good director after one film, especially the kind he did. He didnt show any understanding of filmmaking or anything like that. He built up one big scare (which actually made me laugh). For me, that doesnt mean much. And that doesnt show talent yet.
