Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne will not return for Insidious: Chapter 3

Mar. 11, 2014by: Alex Maidy

With INSIDIOUS and INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 2 giving us some good scares the last couple of years, it seemed inevitable that the franchise would be milked for every last penny like SAW and PARANORMAL ACTIVITY before it. But, while INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 3 is definitely coming our way next year, writer Leigh Whannel is planning some changes to prevent the story from getting stale.

Screen Rant interviewed Whannel and learned what the plans are for the third film and how it will relate to the first two installments. Here is what they learned.

A script for the film is complete.
Insidious 1 & 2 stars Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne are NOT returning.
Insidious 3 will focus on a new family and story.
That story is NOT connected to the last scene in Insidious 2.
Whannell and Sampson WILL returns as ghost hunters Specs and Tucker, respectively.

It seems kind of add to title the movie INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 3 if this will be a completely separate story from the frst two films.  With Patrick Wilson joining the cast of ANT-MAN, it begs the question as to whether they had to come up with a new family or if this was the plan all along.  The first two films do fit together nicely and while a sequel is not impossible, I am glad to see they are going in another direction.

But, will the same demonic forces be haunting the new family or will this be a sequel in name only?  Either way is fine by me as long as we get scares on par with the first movies.  INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 3 will hit theaters on April 3, 2015.

More Whannell and Sampson makes this a must see for me

I only enjoyed the scenes with Whannell and Sampson in part 2... I really hope they stay the focus of this series if they must turn it into the next yearly franchise series.

They also stated in this same interview that Lin Shaye is also already set to be in part 3. Hopefully this one evolves around her the most.

Well, at least Insidious 1 & 2 concluded the story about that family perfectly.

Mixed feelings

I'm glad they're leaving the original family alone. Part 2 tied their storyline perfectly and was an underrated film. I think that people felt it wasn't good just because it wasn't scary but it had much more to offer than the first one, it was a much more original idea than part one or The Conjuring, which was a complete, though a nicely made, cliche.

But I don't see the point in making a part 3. Now I'm afraid that they will make this franchise into a cliche by doing another possession just

'Insidious 3' should be all about a sinister toymaker who wants to destroy the world with Darth Maul masks.

Not sure how to feel they're continuing the story since the second one wasn't what I expected it to be. A new family, with the same premise, kinda just feel likes it'll rehash the same stuff again. Guess time will tell.

I was under the impression that 2 sucked so I skipped it, was that not the case?

While not as scary as part one, the story was just as good if not better. It tied in with the first one in very cool ways and gave Patrick Wilson a chance to really chew some scenery. I'd say at least check it out

DurzoBlint721, I completely agree. I loved how they tied the first two films together.

That's fine. Their characters stories are over and ended on a good, high note. The first two films do complement each other very well and I am glad that Whannell is trying to take it in a different, fresh direction.

I do hope Lin Shaye returns again as Elise. She was terrific in both films. Especially in Chapter 2.
