Paul Bettany on Vision's future, will he be a force for good or for evil?

09.21.2015

CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR will be throwing every hero they can into the ring and placing many of them in conflict with one another, but the allegiance of one of Marvel's newest heroes is still unknown. Paul Bettany made his first appearance as Vision this summer in AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON but will reprise the role in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR. During a panel at the AsiaPop Comic-Con this past weekend, Bettany was asked how he prepared for the role and what we can expect from Vision in the upcoming Captain America film:

I was given comics. I also was looking to think about what could be edifying for me to learn. I took the opportunity—you see my character get born… something unlikely to ever happen to me again. He must be both omnipotent and yet totally naive at the same time. And experiencing the world in real time and his place in it. Is he going to be a force of good or a force of evil? It was really interesting, fun to play with, because he’s dangerous, you don’t know if he’s going to go one way or another. I’m continuing that theme in Captain America 3.

While I seriously doubt that Marvel will take Vision down the latter road, I like that his character will remain relatively ambiguous, at least for the time being. As with much of the talent involved in Marvel's Cinematic Universe, Paul Bettany is signed on for multiple appearances but wouldn't reveal an exact number joking that he was worried about seeing a red dot on his shirt as "Marvel agents everywhere." Bettany did say that this was "the first time in my life that I’ve had the security of knowing that I’ve got a couple of movies to make."

CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR opens on May 6, 2016.

Definitely a force for evil....

He's the final straw that is killing my enjoyment of Marvel films. I have no interest in the character, and they are bringing him in as the "muscle" to replace Thor and Hulk in the new Avenger's lineup. It's actually made me wonder if Infinity Wars is even going to be on my top 5 anticipated movie list.

Here's hoping DC gets their shit together. Outside of Black Panther and Dr Strange, I'm not really looking forward to anything after Cap 3 (maybe Thor, but his first two have been

Vision will be a likely casualty during Infinity Wars.

Regardless of what side he takes, Thanos will want his power source.

So far I like Paul Bettany's take on The Vision. I'm guessing The Vision is continuously learning and he might do something bad because he truly believes it will lead to something good. But in the end he'll learn that such action was a bad thing to do and continue on his learning path.

Sounds about right...but if we assume Cap is the good guy here, and Spidey is given the kind of role that the comic book story gave him, is there space in this movie for two characters to jump ship?

That's a good question. Elizabeth Olsen did say in an article about a couple of days ago that The Scarlet Witch is a wild card. She might be able to convince any team member of both sides to switch side.

Loved The Vision in Age of Ultron...

This is one of the newer MCU characters I want to see a lot more of in the future. Given his pretty limited screen time, I thought The Vision was very well done. So it's good to hear that Bettany is going to be fleshing out the character a bit more. I'd love to see him in a team up movie with another MCU hero. I don't think he'd necessarily be the best choice for a solo movie, but I want to see more than just a supporting role in a larger ensemble film. Maybe a Scarlet Witch/Vision movie like

It's going to be pretty devastating to see Thanos rip him to shreds, but I am curious to see how powerful he will be in Civil War considering how vital of a character he is to the storyline.
