Paul Feig says Ghostbusters reboot will be "scarier than the original"

12.30.2014

Ghostbusters Paul Feig

While I wouldn't say most people are sold on Paul Feig's planned all-female GHOSTBUSTERS reboot, it does seem like some have warmed up to the idea since the project was first announced. In a new interview with Empire, Feig says he wants the reboot to be more frightening than the original, and if he had it his way, it would be rated-R.

I want ours to be scarier than the original, to be quite honest. (Co-writer) Katie Dippold and I are so focused on wanting to do scary comedy. We don't want to hold back...The reason I do a lot of R-Rated comedies is that you want a movie to feel honest. But the Ghostbusters world doesn't need that level of swearing. We'll have to be PG-13 with this one. I would like to make it R-Rated, but I won't. You want the biggest number of people to watch it and not be put off by it.

Paul Feig also talked about why the film will be a hard reboot.

I have too much respect for the original one [to do a sequel]. There's also the feeling that once the world knows ghosts and has seen them busted on such a large scale, they run the risk of becoming pedestrian. There's something fun about introducing our world, which has never seen ghosts to the phenomenon of ghosts. I love origin stories and to introduce new characters.

Feig went on to explain why he decided to go with an all-female Ghostbusters team for the reboot.

A lot of people accused it of being a gimmick. I guess I can see the cynics' view of it, but for me I just love working with funny women. People said, 'Why don't you do a mix?' I'm just more interested in the idea of lady Ghostbusters. It's the way my brain works...It won't be called Lady Ghostbusters! Certainly not...Ghostbustieres is the way to go.

Although several actresses have met with Paul Feig about possibly starring in the reboot, he says it's too early to start casting for the film.

Right now, honestly, there could be 50 Ghostbusters. I'm just waiting to get our first draft of the script together to go, 'Who makes sense in these roles?' If I put the list in front of me of people that have said they want to do it, talk about a Sophie's Choice. When you do a movie like Ghostbusters, people get very interested.

I still think an all-female team feels kind of gimmicky, and although it could work, a lot is going to depend on who ends up being cast in the reboot. What are your thoughts on Paul Feig's GHOSTBUSTERS plans?

I feel the same negativity towards this as I do the FF reboot.

Especially if he plans on using the women he's rumored to be talking to. I mean, who the fuck is his audience? Give me Bill Hader , Rob Corddry, Rain Wilson & Motherfucking Rick Moranis!

Chill out

Geez cmon guys - people holding the first GB so dear let go and just see what happens with this new film. No one forces you to watch the film but lets face it GB2 wasn't all that great infact I'd wager it was mediocre at best. This new collaboration whether it be totally different or a rehash just let it be, so many people are quick to judge and slag films off before they've even come out. I love the fact there are so many undiscovered film writers and producers on this site who wish to impart

well this could work if we get the right director and actresses. I think having the original ghostbusters hunt ghosts in another country would have been cool though. I hope this doesn't turn out dumb!

Also, not only is this reboot insulting to Ghostbusters fans, but it's also kind of insulting that producers and writers only ever consider an all-female team for their action comedy after they've run out of options with the all-male team. Like, no way would anyone even consider making an ORIGINAL film like this starring all women, but sloppy seconds in a franchise the producers ran into the ground? Go ahead!

Yeah, so fun they did it in both Ghostbusters AND Ghostbusters 2. Why not do it again?! *headdesk*
We're never going to see a movie that actually shows us what happens next, will we? Ugh.

You know what this film reminds me of? It reminds me of all the baffling and horrible-sounding promises that the people working on the upcoming Fantastic Four keep making. Every new promise just makes this thing sound worse.

Fuck me, that's a lot of pointless babble

I would never make a movie with the intention of getting a certain rating; it would just be what it becomes.
An all female GB team will never sound good. And we all know who the front-runners are, so it already stinks.
As for being "scarier"... it already is; the idea that this is getting a green light scares the fuck out of me. Screw this shit.

Whatever Paul Feig...

If you want to do an R-Rated movie then do it. You are just like all the other "Sell-Out" director's/writer's out there. The First Ghostbusters had cursing in it, so what's the problem? Your "All Female" cast is lame. Nobody wants to see that. I don't care if it is even remotely good. I could go with a mix of 2 guys, 2 girls or what would probably be better is 3 guys, 1 girl. And if you cast Rebel Wilson, then she better be Slimer because she is god awful. This reboot was fucked once Paul Feig

Going ahead with a reboot, an all female cast, and the possible inclusion of Melissa McCarthy... Yeah. That's scary enough.

As an Evil Dead fan, I really disliked what they did with the recent remake. It's not that I hated the cast or the idea or a remake or anything, it's that it was just stupid. Everything they did was just stupid. Nothing about the remake, aside from being gory, felt like it wasn't forced. The same will happen with Ghostbusters. Okay, you want an all female cast and a full on reboot and origin...but we don't NEED one. We don't need the world to see ghosts for the first time to suddenly appear in

Okay, you want an all female cast and a full on reboot and origin...but we don't NEED one. We don't need the world to see ghosts for the first time to suddenly appear in 2016 (assumably). Ghostbusters already opened that door and it would be better to have the originals as mentors that opened up a franchise with a new cast than a whole damn redo. I don't mind the original cast being background or cameo's, but to redo the whole concept and diminish the existence of the original movie is certainly not respecting the original film.
I'm gonna be skeptical on this one.

meh

The only way this movie is gonna make money is if Sony (or whatever studio is involved) gets hacked for no one to see this movie, all theaters pull out and don't play the movie, then have a few indie theaters play it, it gets released on VOD or youtube, then people feel it is their American right to see this movie....so they feel obligated, and it ends up making 1 million dollars.

This movie is going to flop. There is just nothing about it that seems the least bit interesting. Rebooting the entire franchise with an all female cast is nothing but a gimmick. Sure Feig likes to work with women, but he didn't have final say in the direction of this franchise, the studio did and rest assured they're moving forward with this more for the gimmick and marketing then anything else.

Overall, there really is no reason for this franchise to be rebooted. If they want to go the route of an all female cast, so be it but do it as a sequel not a reboot. Frankly I have no interest in seeing a movie that is trying so hard to usurp the franchise that Ramis and Aykroyd started some 30 years ago.

"I want ours to be scarier than the original, to be quite honest."

Scarier than the original?...I don't think that will be hard at all seeing as how the first one wasn't scary at all.

So you have so much respect for the original movie that you want to bombard us with this Xerox copy of the original but way scarier? I love Ghostbusters. Were Ghostbusters 1&2 scary? A bit. But it's the kind of Scary that even kids will enjoy. When you make Ghostbusters "scarier", you lost the concept altogether.

If it has that fugly lard Rebel Wilson, it just might be scary

Seriously, if that horrible obese bitch is in this movie, it might as well be called the scariest movie in the world. Unless she plays Slimer, then it would be genius casting.

It doesn't matter what you do Paul,

You could cast the best cast and writers but you just can't live up to the legacy. Your movie will come off as forced and gimmicky.

So instead you're just gonna copy the idea, redo it, and act like the previous one doesn't exist? Hey I love origins stories too, but there's already an origin story that's incredibly great. Why would anyone want another one?
