Paul Robeson

Variety has some news on the Paul Robeson biographical film staring Homeland's David Harewood. South African director Darrell Roodt has agreed to direct the film for Four Star International and Greg Carter of Nexus films. Some of his works include WINNIE and CRY, THE BELOVED COUNTRY.

Paul Robeson was a singer and actor "whose political activism brought him to the attention of Sen. Joseph McCarthy, leading to the revocation of his passport for eight years despite his contributions as an entertainer to the Allied forces during WWII." I'd assume the film will mostly cover this period of his life. Also signed on to star is Louis Gossett Jr. who will be playing sociologist and civil rights activist W.E.B. Dubois

If your unfamiliar with Paul Robeson like I am you might want to read up on him as well as W.E.B. Dubois. He had a interesting life and the impact Paul Robeson made in the world went beyond the music he made and the movies he was in. Hopefuly they find a good balance so people can appreciate not only the Paul Robeson's work in entertainment but also his fight for civil rights.

I've heard of Paul Robeson, but was unfamiliar with the specifics of his life. I will say David Harewood does have a striking resemblance to the man. I have a feeling that this movie will be either a TV or limited-run film because the director hasn't done anything since 1997, and Louis Gossett Jr. hasn't been on the A-list since the '80s. Whether that weighs on the movie's quality or not, we'll see.

I was going to look forward to this biopic. Then, the above article informed me that Dubois is a character in the story. Dubois is a very important man in American history, and he inspired many people. He inspired African-Americans and workers of all backgrounds. However, I can stand neither to fucken read nor fucken listen to his diatribes. He might have been fighting fire with fire. He might have been giving white racists a taste of their own rhetorical medicine. However, whether others like
I was going to look forward to this biopic. However, whether others like this fact or not, he is racist whom he condemns. He is the fiery wizard of hate speech and bigoted ideas whome he condemns. Throughout college education, I have had more than enough of reading his ill-informed, poorly-constructed propaganda. His words and ideas might have been necessary militancy for his time. However, they are strictly anti-progressive and outdated now, and they appeal to the worst aspects of human nature. In our worst natures, we want to demonize others as Dubois demonizes white people. We want to scapegoat. We want to make ourselves bigger at the belittling of others. We gain power by pursuing such urges, but we do not create the unity and peace that we humans sought even in DuBois's time and that we seek certainly now in 2013.
I have been coerced too often. At the PC university of recent times, I have had to sit silently while professors and other colleagues discussed DuBois and his revisionist history and his stereotyping and his vitriolic attacks and hypocrisy. I have been allowed neither to criticize nor problematize nor correct nor challenge DuBois's statements and positions. I cannot be forced to see this hate-monger as a hero one more fucken time. Perhaps, the Robeson biopic presents DuBois fairly. However, I suspect that he is presented as heroically as the film's protagonist. I have a right to not experience what disgusts me. Most any Black leaders of the last three hundred years, whether militant or moderate or otherwise, have been morally better than to be black versions of a grand wizard. They have been better thinkers, better humanists, better multiculturalists, better visionaries, better progressivists, better educators, better teachers, better leaders, better authors, more compassionate and complex people, and better human beings than W.E.B. DuBois.

I couldn't have said it better myself. Being from Detroit and going to the Detroit public school system I hated how they put Dubois and others on the pedestal. .
