Paul Thomas Anderson shared a screening of The Master with Tom Cruise

3 years agoby:

Paul Thomas Anderson knew that he might be hitting a very sensitive subject matter with his latest film, THE MASTER.

Sensitive in the sense that it may affect one of his friends, Tom Cruise. Anderson formed a friendship with the actor when he directed him in MAGNOLIA.THE MASTER is loosely based on the founder of Scientology, L. Ron Hubbard. Cruise has no shame in speaking about his religion and beliefs. When it first came out that Anderson would be doing a film like this, many wondered what Cruise would think.

As of now all we have is a teaser which really gives us no further insight to the plot. There is also no word on whether the film sheds a positive or negative light on Scientology. So being a good friend and trying to avoid any conflict, Anderson decided to screen the film for Cruise.

What did he think? All sources will say is that he had a "few issues" with certain parts of the film. The plot is about, "a charismatic leader Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymour Hoffman) – referred to as The Master – who creates a cult-like movement called The Cause. The similarities to Hubbard include the post-World War II time frame and Dodd’s taking a trip on a boat during which he arrives at a new philosophy and creates a faith-based movement. Joaquin Phoenix plays a troubled drifter seeking a path who becomes Dodd’s right-hand man."

The Weinstein Company are also wanting to show the film to John Travolta. The studio is debating on how they should approach similarities with Scientology. Will they acknowledge them openly or keep some distance on the subject? The reaction of Scientology followers like Cruise and Travolta will help make that decision.

um...

what else would Tom/John say?? "Yea, sure, go ahead and make this film as provocative and controversial about scientology as you can!" I mean, are they expecting any other response? people are very defensive about their religion, regardless of what religion it is. JUST MAKE THE F---ING FILM AND DONT WORRY ABOUT BEING SO POLITICALLY CORRECT!

Good on them for showing the courtesy to screen the film for the biggest scientology nutbags in the business, but if those nutbags propose to try and stand in the way of the film in any minute way, then I hope the Weinstein's have the balls to say f--k you and to hell with your cult, and stand behind the film, although I doubt even Tom Cruise has enough pull to truly disrupt an entire film's development. The best thing he/scientology could possible do is to just stay completely quiet about it.

Don't screen the movie for Travolta unless it has a happy ending.

I respect P.T.A for doing this and knowing how Tom Cruise might react to this later, smart just to get it out of the way before the actual press has seen it. Yet from the trailer i'm hoping this or Django Unchained take the oscars, and I hope he still sticks with his gut in the end

Don't worry about offending the lunatics

I wish PTA and the Weinsteins could just release the film without seeking "approval" first. I hope Travolta fucking hates it, that's the kind of reaction you'd want

Well, unfortunately there are so many big name players in Hollywood that believe and follow the cult that as a studio, if you offend them all it could have a major impact on the future of your studio's activities.

Remember 'Respect the cock! Tame the cunt!' ?

Sometimes being overtly offensive isn't the point. I doubt PT made a movie with the sole intention of bitching about Scientology. Like all of his flicks there are probably twelve other things going on beneath the surface.

I love all the 'lunatic' comments

I'm not very religious in any manner but am a little knowledgeable about the basics of most of the main religions. Scientology is just as acceptable or believable as ANY other religion out there, and that's not debatable because there's no proof behind any of them.

As for the movie, looks brilliant - can't wait!

You are exactly right. Galactic warlords is no goofier than virgin births or walking on water.

Time breeds respect - the older a religion, the more its ridiculous origins are obscured. That is why we openly mock Scientologists, slyly laugh at Mormons, quietly disrespect Muslims, accept Christianity as a given, and don't give the Jews a second thought.

It does seem unfair on the Scientologists and the Mormons, because, as you say, they are just as moronic as any other established world
