Paul Thomas Anderson to make The Master next, Weinstein to distribute

May. 9, 2011by: Mike Sampson

There was once a time when it looked as if Paul Thomas Anderson's THE MASTER, a script loosely based on Scientology, would never get made. But Megan Ellison came on to finance the project and it quickly began to gain heat, even rivaling the project Anderson had picked up to fill the post-MASTER void (an adaptation of Thomas Pynchon's "Inherent Vice" for Robert Downey, Jr.). Now comes word that The Weinstein Co. has picked up distribution rights to the film with production set to begin this June.

No longer titled THE MASTER, the untitled project would star Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix in a story about the creation of a religion in the late-50s. Hoffman would play the L. Ron Hubbard style role of a man who returns from the war and creates a belief system while trying to find his way in life. Phoenix would play his assistant, a role once meant for Jeremy Renner.

Anderson is in talks with a number of female actresses, including Amy Adams, about the female lead and perhaps this is why Adams recently turned down a high-profile role in ROCK OF AGES (or perhaps she just realized how silly that movie is going to be). The question would be whether she could fit in both SUPERMAN and this film.

If you'll remember, the project was originally set up at Universal when they balked at the $35 million budget (it's possible the subject matter also scared them off). Anderson took the time to almost completely retool the script and it will be markedly different than his original draft. Either way, it'll be great to have some new PT Anderson material in 2012.

Meanwhile, at Universal Pictures:

President of Production: "Whoa whoa, we've got WAY too many good movies lined up. THE MASTER? AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS? THE DARK TOWER? Those all sound WAY too adult and cool for our audiences. Anyone got any better ideas?"

Mail Room Guy: "How about a sixth FAST AND THE FURIOUS?"

President of Production: "Go on..."

Mail Room Guy: "And... um... a new Jason Bourne movie?"

President of Production: "Wasn't that wrapped up at the end of the last

Head of Marketing: "Yeah, but who gives a shit?"

President of Production: "Ah, good point. Anything else?"

Mail Room Guy: "We could make a new AMERICAN PIE movie?"

President of Production (pressing buzzer on desk): "Brenda, come in here and give this man a blowjob."

Great News

Any time PTA makes a film it is news worthy. I am very happy that this film managed to get saved in turnaround from crap-ass Universal. It really sucks that such a talented and awards bait director has to struggle to make a film in Hollywood. I mean almost every film he's made since Sydney (Hard Eight) has received an Academy Award nomination. Yet, the guy has to beg, barrow and steal to get a film made? That's just wrong! Great that he's got two films in the pipe. Can't wait.

Bless you Megan Ellison, shame on you Universal wimps! I hope this film is no-holds-barred. Maybe Amy Adams would rather act in an expos of this bizarre manipulative cult than co-act with one of the main cultists?

Thank you Joblo!

This is the best news I've seen in a long time, I'm so fucking happy this is happening! I'm much more interested in original PTA material than his adaptation of Inherent Vice. Amy Adams would just be the icing on the cake!

Great news, but Renner > Phoenix.

Renner would have owned this role.

Yeah, Renner's ability to portray personal assistants is unequaled in the film industry. I hear he rivals actual real-live personal assistants in his ability to assist.

No. Renner is a much better actor. Phoenix is some homeless looking guy who like to rap.
