Payne gets R, pissed

Sep. 8, 2008by:

Most action-type movies view an R-rating as something of a Badge of Honor. "Look fanboys! We're gritty enough to earn an R-rating! Nevermind that our movie is a pile of shit - we've got gratuitous gore!" So it strikes me a little odd that John Moore, director of Fox's upcoming video game adaptation MAX PAYNE, is upset that his movie got an R-rating. He accuses the MPAA of "sucking Warner Bros. c*ck" (ahem) and changing "their rules willy-nilly." He says that there's a double standard because of the leeway given to THE DARK KNIGHT while MAX PAYNE seems to be having lots of problems. "They're coming down on us pretty hard," says Moore. Moore, who calls the MPAA an "extremely dubious organization," is likely hamstrung by a contractual obligation to turn in a PG-13 cut, hence his beef. "I didnt go into this wanting it to be necessarily a hard R," which seems pretty obvious given his level of anger of getting a hard R. Or maybe Moore actually has confidence in his film and doesn't need to get an R-rating as a shitty marketing ploy? Das Gamer has the whole interview with Moore which you should read through. MAX PAYNE hits theaters this October.

Extra Tidbit: Moore was the runner-up to replace Bryan Singer on X-MEN 3 but lost the gig at the last second to Brett Ratner.

Saw a tv spot during Prison Break last night and it is definitely PG-13. I was pissed... Oh well.

The Problem Is...

Everyone chill out! The problem the direcotr has is that The Dark Knight was PG-13, and he feels his Max Payne is equal or lesser in terms of dark themes and violence then TDK. So, stop your whining, and besides, if the director wants to make a PG-13 movie, why is that a problem? TDK was PG-13, and has made more money than god, plus I am sure most of (if not all) of you guys loved it. Iron Man too, is PG-13, and again, I am quite sure a lot of guys liked that too. (I am not going to tell you my

Are you serious?

They want to make this PG-13?!? That is ridiculous. That's almost as bad as making Die Hard 4 PG-13. This movie needs to be R. The games have some disturbing stuff, rampant drug use, 4 letter profanity, and plenty of hard-core bloody violence. Please, for the love of god, let this stay R. When I saw the new trailer, I immediately was stoked because I thought "YES! They're shooting for an R rating". Guess I was wrong....

Director's Cut... at least...

I was hoping this would be an R rating, and when i originally heard it was PG-13 I was quite miffed. If you've played the game, you know it should be a disturbing and hard movie. Even if they cut it so as to achieve a PG-13 I am hoping it will get a Director's Cut unrated DVD release.

Are all of you illiterate? The problem Moore has is that he's contractually obligated in delivering a PG-13 movie. He has no choice in the matter, if he did he probably wouldn't make this big of a stink about it.

As for the game being rated M, it was all about body-count. There was barely any blood in it, just bullet wounds in hundreds of people, that's where the M comes in not the blood.

There's no need to speak of the Ratner. What he did to X-men will never be forgiven in my eyes.

"I didnt go into this wanting it to be necessarily a hard R"

What difference does it make if it's a "soft R" or a "hard R"? The flick's still restricted to the same people. He obviously wanted a PG-13, but doesn't want to express that so blatantly.
Also, from the trailer I saw, this movie does look bloody. Dark Knight was intense, but never graphic.
I think the MPAA is ridiculous, but they probably made the right decision here. They're way too strict on sex/language, and too lenient

I hope to god that it stays R. I mean come on! The game was rated M for a reason, and this should get the movie rating equivalent! Even if they cut it for PG13 I'll still see it due to my love of both of the games, and the fact that the last trailer looks absolutley awesome!

Im glad it gets an R, this looks like one of the more promising video game flicks to come out in a while. Plus the trailer is bad ass even if they movie does turn out to suck.

This is amusing

Not only does it sound like reverse psychology, but the director has chosen to use some of the most colorful quoted language I've heard in some time, especially if you consider the trailers even seem to be showcasing the violence.

What little I know about "Max Payne" makes me think they should have a contractual obligation to have a hard R.

If I remember correctly, the video-game was rated 17+ and I don't see why this 'R' rating is a big-deal. I mean isn't staying "true da' game?"

But then again, the game DID have a parental option for blocking the gore for younger gamers. Hmmm.... why not have an R rated movie & a PG13 released together, but premier on separate dates! LOL!

R = I'll go see it!

Why pay $12 to see a watered down PG-13 flick anymore? They winde up on cable within a year anyway. I'm glad it's going to be R!

NuclearMisfit-
I think that's why he's pissed. He feels like he's made something that didn't have to be watered down to get the rating, and they're making him do it anyway. I don't care too much about pg-13 films, as far as getting mad at them goes (although I'm still kind of upset about Live Free or Die Hard), but anytime pieces of a movie are forced to be cut by that bastard association of assholes, it's bad news. And, I'm sure Moore's also pissed because, if he knew he'd get an R rating,
