Penn/Damon sip Milk

Both Gus Van Sant and Bryan Singer are planning biopics of slain San Francisco official Harvey Milk but Van Sant got the advantage over the weekend with the additions of Sean Penn and Matt Damon. The actors are in talks to star in an untitled drama about the openly gay city official who was assassinated along with the mayor. Penn would play Milk while Damon would play his assassin Dan White. The film is being produced by Michael London (SIDEWAYS) and Bruce Cohen & Dan Jinks (AMERICAN BEAUTY). The team is current in negotiations with a studio to distribute the film and if all goes according to plan, filming could begin in December. That could greatly jeopardize Singer's planned THE MAYOR OF CASTRO STREET, which he's developing at Warner Bros. While it is possible both Milk biopics could head to production, it's unlikely as we've seen in the past with battling Alexander the Great and Howard Hughes biopics. Penn is currently promoting his latest directorial effort INTO THE WILD while Damon can be seen next in the Searchlight drama MARGARET.

Extra Tidbit: Van Sant actually wrote an earlier draft of Singer's version of the Milk biopic.
