Peter Dinklage talks Bolivar Trask in X-Men: Days of Future Past "I didn't want to play the villain"

10.01.2013

Actor Peter Dinklage, best known for his impeccable portrayal of Tyrion Lannister in HBO's Game of Thrones is gearing up for another cult icon role as Bolivar Trask in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST. In the comics, Trask is a hard-nosed bigot who creates the Sentinel robots in order to crush the mutant race, but Dinklage wanted to bring a little more to the role, as he explained to EW.

“I didn’t want to play the villain. He’s a man of science. He’s a man of invention. He actually sees what he’s doing as a good thing — [his ambition is] definitely blind and he’s quite arrogant. He’s strove all his life for a certain respect and attention.”

While Dinklage may not see himself as the "main" villain, he certainly has opposition from all sides. Not only is he fighting mutants and their band of X-Men, but also another man of "immense power."

“He’s up against Richard Nixon,” Dinklage said with a wry smile. “He’s got some hurdles.”

I think casting Dinklage in this is brilliant. It's nice to see the actor being offered roles that forego his physical stature and capitalize on his acting stature. Taking on the "villain" role for X-Men as Trask is a really great role for Dinklage and I have no doubt he'll bring the same level of intensity and charm that he's so powerfully demonstrated on Game of Thrones.

X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST unleashes the Sentinel's on May 23, 2014.

I remember a fellow schmoe saying how it seems brilliant that a little person would have an obsession with creating oversized robots, in a comic book psychology way. When Dinklage speaks about Trask striving to be noticed and respected, I'm guessing his physical stature will play into it somewhat. Looking forward to seeing him as Trask and hope the film holds together!

Also, if ever a live-action Wonder Woman anything gets off the ground, he'd be the perfect Dr. Psycho.

Dinklage is an amazing actor. I was a bit surprised when I read that he was cast for the role of Trask, but I also could instantly see him being very good in this role. So far, I've loved everything that Singer has shown us from DoFP.

huh?!

Soooo... I guess we're ignoring Trask was already played a black guy? So like in the future does Dinklage mutate into the 6' 4" Bill Duke?

I think X-Men Days of Future Past exists mainly to quietly retcon away The Last Stand.

Hell Mother F-ing Yes!

Love this guy. For some reason I don't know why but I picture him and Fassbender in a movie together. Maybe Fassbender as Bond and him as M or Q with Nolan directing?....anyone else?

...or, say, Fassbender as a young Magneto and Dinklage as Bolivar Trask?

Pie in the sky, I know, but it could happen.

Dinklage is the man! Just the fact that he's even in the next X-Men movie is just amazing.

Dinklage is a beast. It's awesome to see him scoring roles in major films. He's simply just a better actor than most, apparently Hollywood (who annoys the dogshit out of me most of the time) sees it too. He's gonna be great as Trask. Can't wait!!!
