Peter Jackson finally confirms Orlando Bloom returning for Hobbit

May. 27, 2011by: Mike Sampson

This is hardly breaking news considering word on Orlando Bloom's return to Middle Earth leaked in December, but now we have official confirmation.

Peter Jackson took to his Facebook page this afternoon and confirmed that Bloom will return as Legolas for THE HOBBIT films. Said Jackson in his post, "Ten years ago, Orlando Bloom created an iconic character with his portrayal of Legolas. Iím excited to announce today that weíll be revisiting Middle Earth with him once more. Iím thrilled to be working with Orlando again. Funny thing is, I look olderóand he doesnít! I guess thatís why he makes such a wonderful elf."

Back in December it was reported that Bloom would return for more than a cameo but less than a starring role. I don't think it's surprised anyone that Bloom is returning (and reportedly for a hefty sum) and I'm curious why it took this long to get an official announcement. Either way, it's one last bit of continuity between the original LORD OF THE RINGS series and THE HOBBIT.

I'm extremely excited for The Hobbit for a lot of reasons, one of which is seeing some familiar faces. It'll be like seeing old friends you haven't seen for a while.

I guess any of the Elves could return, due to the whole aging thing. Maybe we'll get a Liv Tyler cameo as well, since I haven't seen her in films much recently.

I agree with some of the comments here, Legolas wasn't in The Hobbit; although in the book they do become captured by elves. Maybe he could have a part in that section and have it in the movie be a longer take then the capture in the book was. Also why the heck is Frodo going to be in there? Frodo was not in the book either....But in all honesty not upset about this news. All books were awesome, all the movies were awesome, although Jackson did some different ways with the movies, they were

WTF!

This is bullshit news! Legolas was never in the Hobbit (unless I missed that chapter). I thought Jackson was all about staying true to the source material...

Great for the Hobbit! BAd for movies. Legolas was badass but dear god dont make him a leading man again. Awful awful actor who ruined every big film he was in. Kingdom of Heaven would have kicked ass if not for his whiny bullshit.

Everytime I see a casting news it makes me feel worried about this film. It's been a while since I read The Hobbit but I'm pretty sure Legolas and Saruman weren't in it.

If you ever read the LOTR, then you already know the amount of shit that Jackson put in the movies that wasn't in the books.

Besides, the books never said they weren't involved and we know they were both around at the time, so technically it breaks no boundaries to show any roll they might have had in the story that simply wasn't expressed at the time of the book's writing.

Having them isn't a problem as long as their appearance is logical and doesn't strain credibility.
