Peter Jackson talks 3D in new Hobbit video blog

Nov. 4, 2011by: Paul Tassi

I'm loving these video blogs for THE HOBBIT so far, and I wish every epic film did something similar during production.

Today’s installment focuses on an aspect of the film you might be skeptical of, the 3D. THE HOBBIT is shooting entirely in 3D which means it won’t be post-converted garbage, but the format hasn’t really found true success since AVATAR in many people’s opinions.

Could it possibly be as astonishing here? Well Peter Jackson aims to convince you in this ten minute video that yes, 3D will be awesome for THE HOBBIT. Obviously there’s no footage to be seen yet, but all those on set are very convinced it looks amazing. Check out the video for yourself below.

Extra Tidbit: What live-action movie, besides AVATAR, do you think has worked really well in 3D?

The reason why the effects in these movies look so believable is because of what they actually build. Notice that they're on sets IN FRONT of a green screen instead of standing on green mats inside of a studio. Filming the movies this way can almost play tricks on your eyes and blend in what is part of the set and what is part of the background... the art and production design on these Tolkien adaptations are absolutely phenomenal.

Getting to see the 3D mirror systems in practical use and not just at a booth at NAB is exciting. Peter Jackson has been a huge supporter of RED cinema going back to the prototype days of the RED ONE (which he nicknamed Boris and Natasha).

I'm sad we don't get to see Del Toro's Hobbit, but who can complain about Jackson taking the reins?

Damn man! I'm as excited about this as the next guy, but every time I see one of those videos, I just get more pumped. This can't come soon enough. It's one of those movies you know will actually deliver the goods. Will all the crap being released nowadays, something like The Hobbit will be more than welcome.

Fuck 3D!

IMAX is the future of immersion. Put that 5K resolution to good use.
This gets green though that was an incredible look into the 3D filming process and I think I got a boner seeing the RED Epic cameras.

Even if 3D is usually unnecessary, if not annoying, sometimes it works very well. For example 3D magnifies movies like AVATAR, THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN - SECRET OF THE UNICORN or TOY STORY 3. So hopefully it will also work for THE HOBBIT.

3D hasn't found success since Avatar

Yeah, every 3d film has failed, except all those ones that made a billion dollars and were enjoyed by millions... But don't let the facts get in the way of serving your own opinion.
PJ rocks and so will these films

I just had a geekgasm

Every time I hear more about this film, I'm more and more pumped to see it. Peter Jackson's really getting it right.

BTW: love the Beatles and James Herriot references in the camera names! :D

I'm more interested as to what the film will look like in 48 frames per second...

Must be nice working "with" Peter Jackson.. he just seems like a all around good dude that makes work fun. I'm jealous of being able to shoot on the red epic. I hope they keep doing these video blogs (i learn a lot) and it gives me hope that Hollywood is doing the right thing.

QUESTION:

When they shoot it in the 3D like this, how do they make 2D prints? What I mean is, since it is really two images, do they just choose a certain camera (left/right) and print that or do they choose the left for one scene, then the right, OR is there some way to put the images together?

When you talk about Wes Anderson using 3D I completely agree. But I think Peter Jackson deserves a little more credit than that.

3D isn't killing anything... It's more like a really expensive hobby for filmmakers.
