Peter Mayhew to return as Chewbacca in Star Wars: Episode VII

04.07.2014

Another classic actor and character are returning for STAR WARS: EPISODE VII with the reveal that Peter Mayhew will portray Chewbacca again in the upcoming J.J. Abrams sequel. Neither Disney nor Lucasfilm confirmed the news, but The Hollywood Reporter cites sources saying Mayhew will don the furry costume yet again. Despite the lack of confirmation, Mayhew recently cancelled some convention appearances due to "filming". Mayhew has not acted outside of the STAR WARS franchise very often, so it is pretty easy to put 2 and 2 together.

We learned over the weekend that filming has already begun on STAR WARS: EPISODE VII and that most of the cast has been confirmed. We have yet to hear who any of the new leads in the film will be but it seems almost a lock that Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher will return to repirse their iconic roles alongside the return of R2-D2 and Chewbacca. Adam Driver is one of the sole actors linked to a role that has not been discounted yet, so he may still be on board as the villain.

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII is formally kicking off production in May, so we could potentially get formal news at that point. Until then, all we know is that the film will take place 35 years after RETURN OF THE JEDI. I just hope that all of the location shooting, rumors of practical sets being built, and the return of these classic actors to their roles means we are finally getting the STAR WARS movie we have been longing for since 1983.

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII hits theaters on December 18, 2015.

If this is true then the time line of 35 years after ROTJ and his appearance means the EU is being disregarded.

I guess you haven't seen Disney and Lucas news, which came out two months ago or so, where they said that most of the expended universe was not going to be in canon. Only the prequels, the original trilogy, obviously the news movies, the animated series and unless I am wrong, a handful of specially selected things from the expended universe. Which, to me, is a very good thing!

I did see that but so much of what has come out about this movie has been bogus it was hard telling what was good info and what wasn't. I consider it a bad thing, as I really enjoyed all of the stories that I read in the EU. I gave this story a negative in the aspect that it's disappointing to me. Does that mean I won't see this movie? Not a chance.

Great news, but how can he do it? I just saw him in Portland and he can't even stand up. He sits in a wheel chair.

I saw it too. Thanks Vern Troyer! So maybe if he is in it, he will be King Chewbacca and just sit on a throne?

Great to hear Chewbacca is back. Now we just need conformation that Billy Dee Williams is back as Lando.

This is great news in that Chewbacca is back, but also that Mr. Mayhew is back on his feet and far along the road to recovery! Cheers!

I'm sure most fans assumed he was coming back, but its nice to have it confirmed. I really hope they don't kill him off, otherwise everyone in my theater will have to listen to a grown man cry.

you act as though he is the only one who does this. This is his career. He does the circuits and EVERY ACTOR who goes to conventions charge for their autographed picture. Take a hike bozo

It's the Celebrity zoo, just instead of the World Wildlife Fund asking for money, it's Dee Wallace Stone and your money will help her redo her lovely walk-in kitchen.

There's nothing wrong with it, but there's nothing really right about it either.

Do you think of the people who run around LA with binders full of photos, throwing every signature they can get on eBay are making an 'honest' living?

What about the ones who get a celebrity to sign something, and then create dupes and sell them?

It's not even one step away from that, they're both manufacturing a signature on a photo and selling it because someone somewhere thinks it has value. We just feel it's okay for them because they're in the picture (btw how many of them actual own

I'm certainly guilty of buying in to it when I was a teenager, but c'mon, it's a total scam.

It may be the norm to charge for autographs, but unless you truly value the signature there's no point in getting it. There are far too many autographs out in circulation for any one of them to be worth anything. And if its personalized with say *to jimmy from* then its worthless as no collector will purchase an autograph that is personalized. Autographs were worth something up until the 90's...then it became a farce and every actor is signing thousands of photo's and merch every year, year

Steve McQueen's signature? Of course! the circuit wasn't part of the deal back then and his signature is worth a lot. But Nathan Fillion? Yeah not worth diddly squat.

Woot!

I was so afraid they were going to replace Mayhew. Talking to him at cons and on AMA's he really loves the character and its like his everlasting pet.
