Pirates of the Caribbean 5 and 6 to shoot back-to-back?

Dec. 3, 2010by:

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES doesn't hit theaters until next year (and the trailer not until TRON: LEGACY hits on December 17) but Disney is apparently so excited with what they've got that they're putting two more sequels into motion. And they'll film them back-to-back.

HitFix is reporting that Disney has begun quietly telling cast and crew members to begin planning for a back-to-back shoot of PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 5 & 6 sometime in the near future. But the big question is whether Johnny Depp will be back.

As Drew points out in his article, Depp is a particularly busy man lately and he's already committed to both DARK SHADOWS and THE LONE RANGER in 2011. Now Disney is behind RANGER as well and could theoretically push that film back but with Gore Verbinski just recently signed on to direct and the search for a Lone Ranger to star with Depp in the film in full swing, that seems unlikely.

What seems slightly more likely is that Disney wanted to quietly alert their PIRATES "A-Team" to a possible mega-shoot in 2012. STRANGER TIDES was the biggest budget Disney ever greenlit and it's very likely that its two sequels would be the biggest budget...well, ever.

It's a big gamble for Disney, a company that has a big gamble still on the table in TRON: LEGACY that's unclear if it will pay out.

It'll be interesting to see how much interest for the PIRATES franchise there is next summer after the last installment of the first trilogy wasn't exactly something that satisfied most fans. Are you interested in the further adventures of Jack Sparrow? Should they start fresh with a new batch of characters?

Extra Tidbit: The Lost City of Gold. There, I said it.

I would ask if they learned anything from the last time they rushed two Pirates sequels but the answer is yes, they did. The movies made major bank.

Look, if they want to turn POTC into some sort of adventure franchise akin to Indiana Jones with Depp traveling the world running into ancient treasures and curses, I'm all for it. Curse of The Black Pearl is one of my favorite films of all time. I adore fun adventure movies, and Pirates is probably the only one that's figured out just how to

Look, if they want to turn POTC into some sort of adventure franchise akin to Indiana Jones with Depp traveling the world running into ancient treasures and curses, I'm all for it. Curse of The Black Pearl is one of my favorite films of all time. I adore fun adventure movies, and Pirates is probably the only one that's figured out just how to do it in the past decade, maybe more.

But, if the plan is to do what they did last time and follow a fun, streamlined adventure movie with two convoluted, uneven, cgi filled sequels, then no thank you. The reason Indy 4 is not really an Indy movie is that the Indy movies are adventure movies. One of the crucial requirements of an adventure film is practical effects, stunts, sets etc. The whole shabang has to look real so that it can FEEL real. Indy 4 failed spectacularly. Pirates 2 and 3 teetered on the edge(3 almost fell over but 2 was teetering). The reason I got such a rush of excitement from watching COTBP is that you really feel like you're on the boats with these characters. There's real water, real wood, real everything. Now compare that to the swirling cyclone thing at the end of At Worlds End. I felt nothing. Just a bunch of cgi characters hitting each other on cgi boats in the middle of cgi water. It did nothing for me.

If Disney is willing to learn from their past mistakes, more power to them. If this is simply the cash grab it seems to be, then I guess they can go join the people behind The Uncharted film in continuing to destroy the adventure film genre that I so hoped COTBP would revive.

All in all, I'm still hopeful for this franchise. As someone below said, Jack Sparrow is one of the greatest characters in the history of film. I'd love for him to get his own amazing trilogy of adventure films. Fountains of Youth, City's of Gold, Atlantis, etc. All those ideas that you'd think Hollywood would have done by now, I'd like to see Jack Sparrow encounter them. All done with his signature "Now bring me that horizon" attitude.

BTW, POTC without Depp means you can go fuck yourself. There isn't a chance in hell that I'll give money to a Depp-less POTC film.

I'll be there for all of them. Depp's Sparrow is is the best original franchise character since Indiana Jones.

There's nothing wrong with Disney turning this into a Bond-style franchise and continuing the series. As long as the movies are fun, swashbuckling adventures with amusing characters and scenarios, I'm sure audiences (myself included) will keep going to see them. Although a Depp-less POTC would likely not be very successful.

Im looking forward to this

Especially since they've left the love story from 2&3 behind. Depp has always been the best part of these movies. I'm glad the focus is back on his character.

No. No! Fuck No! NO!!! One movie at a time! That's how they fucked 2 and 3 up. One story. One movie. Keep it simple. I have high hopes for the new one but do not pull the same shit you pulled last time.

Yes, please leave Johnny alone till "Dark Shadows" and "The Lone Ranger" are a wrap, then I don't care what projects Depp moves onto.

This all depends on the involvement with Johnny Depp really.. but if he's on board then it could be a smart move for them.

I honestly think Tron is going to fail as a blockbuster.. I can't see it being the start-up franchise that Disney wants it to be.

As much as I love Keira Knightley, I think the upcoming movies will be better for focusing only on Cap'n Jack Sparra'.

Love me some POTC but..

Another trilogy is too much and hope they can just finish up on a great note with stranger tides. Needless to say if they made 2 more films i'd still be there opening night.

THEY SHOULD SEE HOW THE NEXT IS RECEIVED FIRST...

I enjoy the Pirates movies but there comes a point when you gotta say what more can be done without just repeating yourselves and boring your audience with more ship battles and sword fights. As it is I think the fourth is a gamble because the pirate craze has calmed down and it'll most likely just be more of the same.

No, the only reoccurring character should be Jack.

It should be like the Indiana Jones series where only the main character returns "mainly" in each film. That way the other characters are fresh and the plot is fresh without being locked down to the previous films.

And have they learned nothing about back to back shooting with Pirates 2&3?

I thought Pirates 1 was a modern classic. I thought Pirates 2 was the best sequel in a trilogy since Empire. Pirates 3 completely ruined it for me. Pirates 4 worries me, but I'm open minded. Greenlighting 5 and 6 before 4 is released is just ridiculous.

As long as the two films shot back to back are not really just one really long film split into two. If they are independent adventures, with good stories, I'll sail under Captain Jack's colors.

Disney is pretty much guaranteed to make a lot of money off of Stranger Tides, so I can understand trying to get two more films into production so that the actors don't move onto other projects. And I don't see an issue with them keeping Depp around, just as long as he's paid the right amount. My only concern is the story. I'm hoping it's more linear as opposed to it being all over the place like it was in the previous trilogy.

Since the last two films absolutely SUCKED, I'm hoping people learn and stay away from Stranger Tides and this franchise can simply fade away. I can dream can't I ???

Bring em on... Indy made the mistake to wait 20 years. And that was a shame, waste of time, crushed childhood dreams, etc.

sure why not, but can you really get any better adventure than the fountain of youth? Indiana Jones proved that no you cant.

If they go by this same pattern then it's likely that #4 will be pretty good and #5 & #6 will suck. And if Depp isn't in them they'd be basically unwatchable.

Depp is Disney's gold mine, I think they're pretty confident after all that $$$ Depp made for Disney with Alice in Wonderland.

NO

The first film was good, the second was okay, and third was utterly atrocious. An epic trilogy is not the way to go with this series. It should be a simple adventure series.

I thought On Stranger Tides was the last

I thought I heard On Stranger Tides would be the last Pirates film that comes out. I have no idea where I heard that, but whatevs.

I'm not too keen on the idea that they're greenlighting two sequels already. That could unnecessarily bloat the whole franchise.

And I can name two franchises that were seemingly ruined by "shooting back-to-back":

Pirates of the Caribbean (Dead Man's Chest and At World's End)

Matrix (Reloaded and Revolution)

Let's hope these Pirates 4, 5, and 6

Let's hope these Pirates 4, 5, and 6 break the trend, but usually the trend goes:

- First film is majorly refreshing. Wonderful movie.
- Second film is okay for what it was, but it just didn't match up to the originality and greatness of the first movie. Plus, all these lingering plot threads leading into the third movie are just annoying
- Third film: WTF.

I was under the impression as soon as PotC3 came out that Depp and Rush were already signed on for 3 more films? Though, I guess it wouldn't be surprising now-a-days to just recast and don't look back if he can't do it. It always happens anyways.

depending on how much of it's budget the first movie makes back, we could be in for two low budget crapfests later.

MORE, MORE

The thing about the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is that you can watch it over and over again, especially Black Pearl. The last two I forward to the best parts. Keep making them, AS LONG AS JOHNNY DEPP IS JACK SPARROW!

I haven't liked these movies. They're far to long and painful. I couldn't be bothered with the third one. 3 more just sounds like torture.

Too much

I can't help but feel like they're making the same mistake they did with after the first Pirates: rushing two sequels.

Seriously, the two sequels could have been condensed into one decent movie. Instead a whole bunch of pointless confusing boring bullshit was shoved in there as "plot".

They were showing the 3rd film on TV a few days ago and my buddy brought up a good point about why the sequels suck - too much half-baked mythology. Too many different curses / creatures / magical objects

This next one may very well be good and more streamlined playing on the strengths of Depp, but I think they'll screw it up again with the sequels.
