Pirates of the Caribbean 5 is coming in July of 2017

07.23.2014

There's been talk of a Pirates 5 movie for some time, and now the release date has been set in stone: July 7, 2017. Walt Disney Pictures officially announced the release date of the next picture, albeit with no other details to go along with it. Previously it was reported that it would carry the subtitle DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES, and that the only returning characters were Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow and Geoffrey Rush's Barbossa. Whether or not any of that's changed is uncertain, but Espen Sandberg and Joachim Ronning are still on board to direct the film with a screenplay by Jeff Nathanson (RUSH HOUR 3, CATCH ME IF YOU CAN).

I've only seen each of the PIRATES films once, and while I feel Depp created one hell of a charismatic character in Sparrow, one great character does not make a great film. I enjoyed the hell out of the spectacle that was DEAD MAN'S CHEST, but I don't think they've crafted a well-rounded experience just yet. Here's hoping that with PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES (or whatever they call it), they can create something truly memorable.

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES will be released on July 17, 2017.

Seems legit.

The biggest problem the POC movies have is the whole movie is a huge spectacle, however not much stays with you. I can only remember a handful of scenes from the 4 previous movies because nothing stand out the way it should.

No, they should have stopped at 3. The trilogy worked, and the 4th film didn't. At this point, I don't see them adding much to this series that we haven't seen before. Disney should put it's money towards another sequel, like Tron 3.

Need a good script...

I enjoy these movies, even if they do have little substance. First one is the best, and the 3rd one would have been better with more editing.

Anyways, Rush and Depp as pirates is always fun, would love to see Elba, Eastwood or Sam Elliott get a part as a villian.

...and then Disney will refuse to release the movie on 3D BluRay, like they did with Frozen and Need for Speed. WTF, Disney?
I actually enjoyed the last one, much better than the third.

Does any one else sense a reboot? I don't think they'd recast, but they might go in a Transformers 4-ish direction. Think about it, Pirates 4 was in 2011. So that's a 6 year gap. If they really do a plain and simple Pirates 5 six years later I'll be impressed. But if this was a basic sequel you'd think they'd lock down a 2016 date instead. 6 years is a long time. Especially when 2 & 3 came out 10 months apart (yes I know they filmed back to back, but still).

These films are a lot of fun, so I'm game as long as they keep Marshall far away from the director's chair. As usual, Eastwood looks badass in any form.

I was really surprised to enjoy the fourth film as much as I did. While there certainly was a bit of a "going through the motions" feeling to it, I found it as straight-up entertaining as the first one. However, it is true that Jack Sparrow works best as a supporting character. Will = Luke, Elizabeth = Leia, Jack = Han. Joshamee Gibbs = Chewie?
