Pixar unveils the new title logo for the animated action-adventure, Brave

09.22.2010

This is the first that I am hearing of Pixar's project, BRAVE. Previously it was titled, BEAR AND THE BOW.

Today a title logo has been unveiled on the Facebook Fanpage for the film. What's BRAVE all about?

A press release from Walt Disney Studios back from 2008 said this:

"A rugged and mythic Scotland is the setting for Pixar's action-adventure "The Bear and the Bow." The impetuous, tangle-haired Merida, though a daughter of royalty, would prefer to make her mark as a great archer. A clash of wills with her mother compels Merida to make a reckless choice, which unleashes unintended peril on her father's kingdom and her mother's life. Merida struggles with the unpredictable forces of nature, magic and a dark, ancient curse to set things right. Director Brenda Chapman ("The Prince of Egypt," "The Lion King") and the storytelling wizards of Pixar conjure humor, fantasy and excitement in this rich Highland tale."

Yes! Another hot red-headed princess! Reese Witherspoon will provide the voice for Merida. It will be interesting to hear Witherspoon's Scottish accent. Billy Connolly, Emma Thompson, and Julie Walters will also star. BRAVE is set to release June 15, 2012.

Check out the logo below!

Extra Tidbit: Ariel always wins the "hot Disney princess award" every time.

Veeeery interesting. Also, I'm appalled that I did not know about this until now.

Anyway, it sounds a bit like they plan on Building A Better Shrek. And thank god, because that is one of the most overrated properties in all of animation.

Brave

Belle gets my vote over Ariel. Ariel is pretty, but a teenager.

"Yes! Another hot red-headed princess!"

I give it five minutes before a character says "Hoots, mon!" in a Groundskeeper Willie accent - because that's what the Scots sound like, apparently.

WOW

I must say I am shocked that Pixar and Disney have taken the road they are taking. As a Dreamworks fan, I am much more encouraged by that company's upcoming slate than I can imagine fans are of Pixar's slate. Cars 2, Tangled, Brave? Don't fool yourself and say that you're not worried about the state of Pixar. Disney has ruined the company...they've been watered down. These new films coming out were made AFTER the merger.

I don't think anyone's worried about the quality of Pixar's upcoming slate. In fact, they recently cancelled production on NEWT (after spending a great deal of time and money on design and animation tests), presumably because they were worried about the quality of the story.

Ummm...Up was the second animated movie ever to be nominated for best picture and I am sure Toy Story 3 will win best animated feature and also a shot at being nominated for best picture. Not worried at all.

Also Tangled isn't a Pixar film, that one is being made solely at Disney.

They only have Cars 2 and Brave coming up a the moment.

Do you know how many of Pixar's movies have won Oscars?

100% of them.

They're also responsible for the only trilogy in history with a good 3rd film. Believe me, I'm not worried in the slightest.

I say bring it on! Sure, I wanted to see Newt, too. Still hoping we will someday. But there's no way I would think this won't be a good one. If anyone is complaining it should be about Pixar sequels to anything other than The Incredibles.

Sounds like this will be more a la How to train you Dragon and Secret of Kells than Disney princesses in distress. Maybe even, looking at the title, a little bit like Braveheart? Billy Connolly is always great, and Witherspoon did a good brit accent in Vanity Fair.

While I will never doubt an original Pixar title, I'm sad that their first female lead is yet another princes. I also hope this isn't another meta-fairy tale. I'm sick to death of all the CG meta fairy tale movies since Shrek.

Cars was not a bad film at all. If it had been released by anyone other than Pixar, it would probably get more respect. Pixar has done well with its Toy Story sequels, so Cars 2 could very well surpass its predecessor.

I would argue that the reason for the sequel is *because* they weren't happy with the first one. So they want to fix it. But maybe I'm too much the optimist with that.

Anyway, Cars gets too much criticism. It's like everyone forgot about the sanitary blandness that was "A Bug's Life" when they call Cars the worst pixar film.

Right on, sounds good. The fact that it's not a sequel is a plus too. Ariel with legs wins the hot Disney princess award. Jasmine's no slouch either though.

Interesting. Witherspoon is of Scottish heritage so I would imagine she's familiar with our tongue. I think she'll do just fine. I admit Newt sounded so much better but Pixar have never failed to impress me and I don't think they ever will.

Newt would have been good, but I'm interested to see how Pixar handles humans in a medieval setting. We've seen them do critters numerous times. That being said, Newt should have been done instead of Cars 2 or Monsters, Inc 2.

No it didn't. In all honesty, Newt sounded like the least original idea Pixar had. Which is why another studio came up with a very similar idea. Pixar's films have been getting better and better as of late and I think a story like Newt would seem to basic and a bit predictable.

yes it did, an intimate tale of romance and longing...not some overblown princess movie.

Intimate romance and longing? That is not what it sounded like at all. Newt seemed like a rom com. The only way the movie would have been good for me is if the 2 Newts never got together to reproduce.

I actually thought about that after reading over the synopsis, and you know what? I don't think a transformative ending (they each decide to let their species die, in order to strengthen some other newtish species) would have worked either. They already explored that in Ratatouille. Basically the whole story sounded like a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation...where the only way to win is not to play. So they didn't play. Can't fault them for that.
