Pixar vs. Dreamworks

04.03.2009

When it comes to debating which animation house--Pixar or Dreamworks--produces the highest quality films, there really isnt much of a comeptition. Pixar is like the Rolls Royce of animation, with films like FINDING NEMO, WALL-E and THE INCREDIBLES to its credit, and Dreamworks is like a 3-legged donkey, with films like the 14 Shrek movies and KUNG-FU PANDA to its credit. The folks at Poe News have summed up the disparity between the two studios with a pretty astute diagram that manages to enlighten and amuse all at once. Behold!

Extra Tidbit: What's your favorite Pixar film to date?

LOL! So true!

Dreamworks needs to take a lesson from Pixar.
When I see a Dreamworks movie, it's basiclly all fart jokes and pop-culture references, and I'm not really entertained. Pixar is much better at coming up with a story - a good, memorable story - not to mention the Pixar movies are funnier and have better animation than the Dreamworks movies. Pixar's movies are all great, original, touching, imaginative, funny, exciting, memorable, relatable, etc. and they'll be remembered far into the future; most

Pixar's movies are all great, original, touching, imaginative, funny, exciting, memorable, relatable, etc. and they'll be remembered far into the future; most of the Dreamworks movies are unmemorable, and that's why they keep making sequels for almost every movie. Also, Pixar has more variety. For example:
Pixar - toys, bugs, monsters, fish, super-heroes, cars, rats, and old men and talking dogs.
Dreamworks - bugs, ogres, animals, fish, more animals, more bugs, monsters, and even more animals.
What's next Dreamworks? Animals and ogres on a mission to exterminate bugs and monsters while eating fish tacos?

Pixar is an the most impressive movie studio. They just don't fail. Toy Story is the backbone of the company and is my personal favorite of all their flicks. The rest are a close second though. I think Walt would be very pleased to see what Pixar has done under his name because these are the type of movies that Walt was all about. As a huge fan of Disney, I'm glad Pixar became a permanent fixture for the company.
Best Dreamworks animated movie? Was Surf's Up Dreamworks? That movie wasn't too

Toy Story 2.

Hands down, my favourite Pixar movie and one of my all time favourites too.

I'm a huge Disney fan and Pixar has cemented themselves even deeper then the original hand drawn Disney classics. They have so much rich character development and excellent pacing that you forget it's a cartoon you're watching and literally feel a connection with computer animated characters.

Brilliant.

Wall-E probably, but The Incredibles and Toy Story are great as well.

personally I loved Cars, When I first heard about it I thought err mmmm naaa
but after seeing it I loved it. Pixar wins hands down for quality animation and story. Dreamworks is a great stop gap whilst waiting for the next Pixar movie. That picture above is true they doo have that smile in everything they do.

The only DreamWorks movie I think was better than its Pixar counterpart was Antz, in part because unlike most DreamWorks movies, they acted like ants, looked like ants, and since they tried to make it a Woody Allen movie, there was still pretty rich character development.

Nemo hands down has the best story and pace. Every pixar movie is excellent but each has little flaws. Nemo has a good mixture of everything hence it's my favorite...that and I saw it like 7 times in theaters. I'm a huge animated movie fan, but nothing compares to pixar. Even Disney's in house animated movies do not compare. Bolt was good, but not as good as a pixar movie. The last animated movie I loved that wasn't a pixar movie was Lilo & Stitch. Pixar is hands down a top-notch company

pixar

Dreamworks has nothing on Pixar, Pixar has hit after hit and Dreamworks has hit after flop, Pixar is a very solid animation studio and never dissapoints, Dreamworks not so much.

It's very difficult to pick a favorite Pixar film, they are all so good, I would say say all of them.

Dreamworks is alright, but they can't hold a candle to Pixar, who've grown to become my favorite (or one of) movie studios.

As it stands, Wall-E and Toy Story are my favorites of the bunch. But since Toy Story, I stand by that they've never made a bad film yet. Cars may be their weakest on, but it's still a damn good watch and beats a ton of Dreamwork's offerings.

Bias

Okay, to those who keep complaining that this article is too biased and one-sided (I especially like the one that refers to "unbiased journalism"; it made me laugh), remember this: you are on joblo.com. This is essentially a blog with movie news. Blogs don't require journalistic integrity; they are open to opinion. The writers have every right to express a biased viewpoint, even if we disagree. That is what the strike backs are for.

Personally, I agree that Pixar is better than Dreamworks. Dreamworks relies far too much on spoofing ideas, filling their movies with a series of gags, throwing in crude humor, and making references to pop culture items that will be forgotten (making the films dated). Pixar creates original stories with imaginative ideas and colors them with amazing animation and a truly entertaining movie experience. To me, there is no contest (and, thanks to John Lasseter and his creative control over Disney animation, animation fans can look forward to a revival of quality Disney films, including 2d.)

And, by the way, I feel like the only one defending Cars. On the first viewing, it could be considered a disappointment. But I watched it multiple times and liked it more with each viewing. Stop acting like just because you don't like a movie, this makes the film bad. I don't think it sucks. I have enjoyed every Pixar film, including Cars. Why is this always an exception?

Both studios have their merits. Like "Ants" was better, IMO, than "A Bug's Life." The Shrek films are all very good, 1st one though is the best. And I loved "Kung Fu Panda".

As for Pixar, my fav is "WALL*E" easily. Followed by "Monsters,Inc" and "The Incredibles". That little cooking rat was pretty cool too.

This article is totally biased towards Pixar. Dreamworks make some good movies. You should just be happy there are a lot of quality animated movies out there and not try to compare all the time.

I prefer hand-drawn animations.

But, out of this bunch, Pixar takes the cake.

Dreamworks is OK, nothing more.

Dreamworks doesn't belong in the same sentence as Pixar. There's nothing wrong with a simple animated movie like 'Kung Fu Panda', but it's just another animated movie that entertaines you at the moment and you forget about the next day.

Pixar doesn't deliver cartoons, time after time they create something that is right there in the competition for 'Best Film of the Year'.

This story is insanely one sided. What happened to unbiased journalism? Anyway, I personally think Kung Fu Panda is better than anything Pixar has put out over the last ten years (not counting The Incredibles).

Hilarious. This period of animation will be remembered as the golden era for Pixar, just like the golden era of Disney during the 30's-40's. Dreamworks' products will simply be forgotten. Dreamworks makes movies, Pixar makes films.

spot on

Kung Fu Panda was a big step forward for Dreamworks, thanks to the script and direction. More of a real story, sense of empathy and wonder, fantastic action and designs...But they still relay way too much on the gags. And cute goofy faces, right.
