Pixar's next will be based around Dia de los Muertos, Toy Story 3's Lee Unkrich attached to direct

Apr. 25, 2012by: George Merchan

During Disney's CinemaCon presentation today, Pixar's Chief Creative Officer John Lasseter announced the studio's next big feature project: a film based around the Mexican holiday Dia de los Muertos (a.k.a. Day of the Dead).

According to Lasseter, TOY STORY 3 director Lee Unkrich is attached to helm the project. Unkrich himself later confirmed via Twitter:

For the unfamiliar, the Dia de los Muertos holiday (via Wikipedia) "focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. It is particularly celebrated in Mexico, where it attains the quality of a National Holiday, and all banks are closed. The celebration takes place on November 1–2, in connection with the Catholic holidays of All Saints' Day (November 1) and All Souls' Day (November 2). Traditions connected with the holiday include building private altars honoring the deceased using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed and visiting graves with these as gifts. They also leave possessions of the deceased."

It's believed that the film will likely see a release either in Fall 2015 or Summer 2016. What a great setting for a Pixar film!

Extra Tidbit: Immediately thought of Tim Schafer's video game masterpiece "Grim Fandango" upon hearing this news.

This can be a groundbreaker, seeking unfamiliar territory and embracing it with a story that the whole family will love. I'm in.

Pixar is awesome

Pixar stuff has typically been about things that have alot of variety in their characters like in Finding Nemo (fish) Toy Story (Toys) Monsters INC (monsters) and Walle (robots). Using ghosts and ghouls is a great medium for them to harness in a true pixar fasion

I am so happy about this! There was a rumour he was going to be helming Toy Story 4 and that would have ruined the way the film story ended in 3.

This is perfect!

Dia de los Muertos sounds more like Tim Burton's territory than Pixar's (whose stuff is generally more family-oriented), but I'm sure Unkrich and gang will make a great story out of it.
