Potter mini movie

06.18.2008

Harry Potter For someone who's sworn never to revisit the Harry Potter world, author J.K. Rowling has certainly done a lot to expand its universe beyond the seven book series. First, she hand writes a leather-bound series of shorts of "Tales of Beedle the Bard" featured in the final book, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows", then she auctions off an eight hundred word prequel chronicling the boy wizard's time before Hogwart's and now there's a rumor floating through the cyberwebs that she's written an entirely new story that'll be turned into a mini-movie featured in a brand new "Wizarding World Of Harry Potter" theme park in Orlando, Florida. What's more, all the actors who currently star in the feature adaptations of the books - namely, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint - will reportedly be reprising their roles for this short.

Extra Tidbit: Sounds like "Harry Potter" will go the way of James Bond and basically continue forever.

Agree with GavinE. She's a hack. I thought (no, *hoped*) that she'd pull herself out of the hole she'd dug for 6 books and give me a reason to like her with book 7. But that was such a piece of shite that I've sworn never to re-visit the world of HP again. And unlike JKR, I'll stick to it. I'll be skipping the 6th and 7th (and 8th) movies.

It's not just that she's a formulaic writer. It's that she is incredibly poor at using the basic tools of most good authors.

It's not just that she's a formulaic writer. It's that she is incredibly poor at using the basic tools of most good authors.

Foreshadowing, for example, ought to lead where it is pointed or at least give us a snap-twist at the end. (example, Neville should have killed Bellatrix LeStrange but he was denied the chance to even have that honor).

Second, if it's important enough to be worth mentioning, then mention it in the book, not as some off-the-cuff comment in a post-book interview (example: "Dumbledore is gay").

Third, if your world has rules, write them down and keep them next to you when you write ALL of your books and do not alter them throughout the series.

Fourth, the genre of "hidden world" is so full of impossibilities and paradoxes that even a talented writer would find it challenging. A hack just makes it look stupid (Examples: Non-decimal monetary system, inability to understand what a rubber duck is, wizards wear watches but don't know the basics of other electromechanical devices, dragons and other monstrous creatures and all the impacts they have on the world are completely hidden by wizards, etc etc).

Anyway, f*** JKR. She's rich and her writing is juvenile. Guess that tells me a lot about this world. Her auctioning off of tidbits for charity is the only positive, but if she really cared, maybe she could give half her money away. She'd still be richer than the queen.

One-trick Rowling

Harry Potter is all this woman is ever going to do. She is riding this license to print money for as long as humanly possible. Rowling is such a formula writer. She will never do anything else except Harry Potter. She's a hack, granted, a rich hack, but a hack nonetheless.

Yeah Benj, that and a husband, a few kids, and more money than we'll ever see in our lifetimes. She's just weaning herself off of it; an eight hundred word outline and an intro to a theme park ride - all done within a year of Deathly Hallows' release - hardly count as evidence that she'll continue the series forever.

Hey if all it takes for her to score 25 million for a charity that helps blind kids with cancer is to write a coupla paragraphs that adds to a great story we all love, hell let her do what she does.

Rowling actually said she'd never write a sequel novel or a prequel novel. She never said a thing about doing stuff for charity or something like this.
