Predators gear up

Aug. 17, 2009by: Dave Davis

Director Nimrod Antal (VACANCY) is the guy bringing the extraterrestrial headhunters back to screens with PREDATORS, which is officially getting underway at Troublemaker Studios in Austin on September 28th, according to Production Weekly.

With things coming together relatively quickly (in order to make Fox's planned release date of July 7, 2010), expect to hear casting announcements soon. And according to Bloody Disgusting, you can expect to see 'a "Black", "Asian", "Russian" and "Latino" marine' among the humans.

Producer Robert Rodriguez already described the sequel as a "character driven action movie" that "involves a very intense group of people stranded on a Predator planet discovering unspeakable horrors (that are not always from outside their group)."

And a good sign for fans of practical effects -- Rodriguez regulars and expert monster-makers KNB EFX are handling the crab-faced aliens, according to STYD. KNB's Greg Nicotero and Howard Berger actually worked on John McTiernan's 1987 original.

Extra Tidbit: Antal reportedly got the job based on the strength of his upcoming heist thriller ARMORED, which the studio doesn't actually seem to want us to see -- it was scheduled for a September release but is now pushed to December 4th (the movie filmed in early 2008).

Character driven = not necessarily a bad thing..

The mercs in the first Predator were well-drawn characters. We just didn't need their entire backstory, their characterization came out through what they said and did. You know, like how a movie's supposed to be?

Unless you guys would just like the Predators hacking chunks out of random, faceless, story-less extras?

Didn't they attempt "character driven" with AVP:R. The soldier mom coming home from active duty to her broken and disfunctional marriage. And the teens fighting over that one chick, who were childhood friends, or some shit like that.

Yeah no. What character drivenness was there in PREDATOR back in the 80's? None. It was an animal hunting an animal. And it was badass.

Leave it at that.

Rushing this film for release next year will lead to disaster.

As Huttjos wrote below, pushing this film out on such an accelerated production schedule is not a good sign at all. Fox is notorious for rushing films to meet a pre-set date and in each and every case the results of this are obvious on screen. Something always has to be sacrificed in order to meet the insane deadline, whether itís the casting, the actual filming, or the special effects. X-MEN 3 is probably the best example of this. I remember reading at the time that the reason Matthew Vaughn dropped out of directing the film was because there was no way a quality product could be made in the time Fox was giving the film's production.

My hopes for this film have dropped significantly and that is a huge shame because I was greatly looking forward to it.

Demographics

Producer Robert Rodriguez already described the sequel as a "character driven action movie" that "involves a very intense group of people covering as broad a demographic as possible in the hope of maximising our opening weekend profits before the movie sinks like a giant turd."

Michael Jai White

Please let the rumors be true that Michael Jai White will star. That man needs to be the lead in this film.

"Character Drive Action Film" Worse excuse for GARBAGE!

I love Predator even liked the in all true accounts bad Aliens VS Predator movies. But I don't know what happened to R Rod but the fun 96' Desperado" guy, went (oh yeah kids made him soft, sorry kids you are the cause of Sharkboy VS who cares LavaGirl & 3 Spykids movies!) But this will probably blow chunks. Maybe if they could get Jean Claude Van-Damme to put on the Predator suit he was supposed to wear as he was cast in it to begin w/but I believe he was too short, or going to start filming

Just watch him in his only real acting he'd ever done in the monologue scene "JCVD." You don't need to see the whole movie just watch that part. There ya go, Predator suit, w/ JCVD's face, kicking ass taking names w/ of course "THE CHARACTER DRIVEN ACTION PLOT TOO!"

Quite frankly, if fox is trying to push this movie out in under a year and they haven't even begun filming, I do not give this movie any hope. Nowdays for these types of movies, studios want that boring and stupid type of screenplay like we got for the avp movies. (although they were 'fun' they were not good. And yes, there's a difference.

Doesn't matter though, cause I'll probably go and see this crap to be anyway

I don't think the AvP movies were fun in the slightest. I wanted to tear my eyes out with a spoon after watching both.

Hurm...

Because Robert Rodriguez' name is one this (though I'm not sure where) I will give it the benefit of the doubt. They better do the Predators justice with this one!

I was happy until...

a "Black", "Asian", "Russian" and "Latino" marine' among the humans.

Ok...I'm all for diversity in horror movies but in this case, I rather see white people getting killed than this....

Dibs on the Latino being the only survivor cuz of Robert...( and cuz I'm Latino :P)

I ain't got time to bleed...

... or to wait! The 13 year-old boy in me just blew up, and I'm not making an ejaculation joke! I grew up watching Predator and Predator 2 (so underrated) and they are still legendary to me now. I even used to be able to make the Predator mandible noise. Hopefully this film will be badass enough to redeem one of cinema's greatest creatures to ever grace the screen. Maybe we'll even be able to finally forget about those damn AvP movies.
