Prince Lestat lives as Anne Rice’s The Vampire Chronicles lands at Universal

It has been a talking point for years now, but we are getting closer to a remake of INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE. Universal has acquired the rights to Anne Rice’s anthology of novels, "The Vampire Chronicles". The deal is for every book in the series including the ones that have already been adapted (the awful QUEEN OF THE DAMNED too). Imagine's Brian Grazer will produce with Imagine Entertainment alongside Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci who seem to want to own everything these days.

It’s not known yet if they’re going to remake the 1994 hit starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt but it would make sense to start over again; a lot of people who adore the original might say otherwise.

The deal ensures that Universal and Imagine will have an entire body of existing and future novels in Rice’s “The Vampire Chronicles” series, including the adapted screenplay for “Tale of the Body Thief,” written by Rice’s son, author Christopher Rice. Other novels in the series include “Interview with the Vampire” and the upcoming “Prince Lestat."

As I mentioned, these reports go back a number of years; there was a time when Robert Downey Jr. was said to be attached to play Lestat in a new film based on “Interview With the Vampire”. I wonder if they will play on the romantic side of the series that Rice wrote or spin it in a different direction like what Kurtzman is doing with THE MUMMY reboot which sounds like an action-adventure.

Are you a fan of the series? Would you be game for another INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE?
