Metal Gear Solid adaptation announced with Avi Arad producing

Aug. 30, 2012by: Paul Shirey

Fans of the METAL GEAR SOLID videogame series may have cause to rejoice as it was announced at the Metal Gear Anniversary event in Tokyo that a feature film was in the works with uber-producer Avi Arad for Columbia Pictures.

"For many years I fought to bring comics to theaters," said Arad, appearing onstage with Kojima. "Comic books are now biggest genre in cinema," he continued. "Video games are the comic books of today."

The VP of Konami, Hideo Kojimo, confirmed as much during a presentation at the event, even elaborating on potential stars for the film, including Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, and Hugh Jackman.  He was also sure to note that Christopher Nolan was his favorite director.

"We'll tell these actors and directors who you want, and maybe they'll do it for nothing," said Arad, who also gave a broad view of how they intended to approach the lengthy series as a feature.  "We will take our time and tell the story with all the nuances, ideology, cautionary tales needed, " he said.

This isn't the first rodeo for METAL GEAR SOLID, as producer Michael De Luca attempted to bring the series to the big screen as well, ultimately ending in a stalemate with Konami and the studio.  The MGS series has been around since 1998, churning out a string of successful games that have defined the "stealth" genre.

With Arad on board, this project may well have a "solid" chance of making it to the big screen, but I still have my doubts.  The producer is known for blowing a lot of hot air and this could very well be another gust, especially since no talent is yet attached, let alone a script completed.  It would definitely be cool to see the series brought to life, but don't mark your calendars just yet.

More as this develops.

i always said, if they make an MGS movie...

it should be a "cheesy" 90's action movie. almost like the look of Machete

I remember that Christian Bale was once attached to star in an adaptation of MGS. Now that would make the involvement of Nolan that more awesome

Fully expecting thumbs down patrol...

but I think casting is missing the bigger potential problem - storyline. The whole final act of the Metal Gear games is both horrible, and almost always the same. It's super clunky, and I wind up enjoying the game in spite of the wooden plots points being ticked off like mile markers. Cast some unknown, cast a household name. Shit, cast Freddy Prinze Jr, I don't care. Just make sure it's a well-written script and have a competent director calling the shots.

I think the best way to adapt the series is to go waaaay back and adapt the very first Metal Gear game for the MSX. Snake should be played by someone that look close enough to Michael Biehn as his image was the main inspiration of the first game. At least, the first 30 minutes of the movie should touch that particular era of Solid Snake's life. Oh hey here's an idea. Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Solid Snake because 1) I really wanna see what he can bring to the table as an action star 2) It would be

Bryan Cranston should play Revolver Ocelot. Marilyn Manson as Psycho Mantis!

I'd love to see Joseph Kosinski of "Tron: Legacy" get the gig of directing this. He has this kind of visual flair that will suit Metal Gear Solid. As for Solid Snake himself, Karl Urban.

Please don't screw this up.

I don't think Christopher Nolan would do this but If he did that would be my dream director for this. Casting would be Solid/Liquid Snake: John Hamm or Michael Fassbender in both roles for obvious reasons, I have people in mind for the rest but snake is all I'm really concerned about.

MGS begins with Solid Snake coming out of retirement, so we need someone with some seasoning. Anyone trying to cast Channing Tatum, Alex Pettyfer, Paul Walker, or any other young flavor-of-the-month needs to be put down. Same goes for tying the bandana on Ben Affleck. Just don't do it... Josh Holloway seems like a decent fit. I also like Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Karl Urban.

Nerd casting? David Hayter after a few months with a personal trainer. Done. Done for reals.
Realistic casting? Anyone but Matt Damon or Ben Affleck. They're not bad actors, but they aren't Snake.
Snake - Hugh Jackman is good, but I'd prefer a nobody. Not Bale. I can't hear that growly voice anymore. Meryl - Elizabeth Banks. Otacon - Cillian Murphy. Liquid Snake - Josh Holloway. Ocelot - Gary Oldman. Psycho Mantis - Doug Jones.

I'd also accept Liam Neeson as Ocelot. Maybe Eric Bana as Snake. Maybe. Sean Maher would also make a perfect Otacon.

Jason Statham

Kurt Russell played the original Snake Plisskin in Escape From New York (and Escape L.A.), from which this game franchise is based from. It would only be fitting that he reprise his role in some way. Jason Statham would be a great choice for Snake as he has the voice, the smarmy attitude, and action skills to pull it off. Will never forget the original game on the PS1, the gameplay involved injecting yourself with drugs to slow your heart rate down in order to kill your enemy with a sniper

Very intense and addictive gameplay indeed.

I been wanting this for years even said a reboot of tomb raider with a solid snake cameo would be an idea

Didn't the series start pre 1998

We'll see. I believe with Avi on board, this has a better chance, but we'll see. These video game adaptations always have a way of dropping the ball, with scripts not passing and too much time and money going by without any fruition. I'd also worry about an adaptation. The games have epic length, a length necessary to tell the whole story of MGS. While people may complain about lengthy cut scenes, they are almost always completely necessary to tell the full story of any single MGS game. Take

Take any shortcuts, and you may be taking out part of the backbone of the story. That would essentially be what the film is, a shortcut story of MGS. I am extremely skeptical of this and will have to see some very impressive pre-production and casting choices to get on board with this film project. As far as actors for the Snake role go, that's a tough one. I can't really think of a current actor who can truly personify Snake.

While David Hayter is not the best writer, he is about one of the only one i can name that i would trust to be involved with this. I mean he has experience writing adaptations (x-men, x2, Watchmen) and well he is snake. Chris Nolan with someone helping for the few action scenes. not sure on casting but some good ideas posted already.

My first choice was Christian Bale as Snake and, natch, Kurt Russell as Big Boss. But I'm open for better suggestions. Ray Park should play Cyborg Ninja because well, why not. At least he'll have speaking lines this time. If anyone should play Otacon it's John Heder. As always, Mary Elizabeth Winstead should play every heroine in every frickin' movie and I'd love to see her as Meryl.

ZOMG

If they do this correctly....holy shiet...the videogame genre will explode in Hollywood. Imagine with Kojima producing with Arad, having Nolan direct and Hugh Jackman or someone else worthy of being Snake...it could be insanely epic. It has to be psychological, intellectual, and story-driven, like the games. They can't make this like a comic-book movie...MGS is not a comicy story, but rather it aims at realism with a philosophical message, driven by dialogue and complex characters...the stuff

If they get some shitty Uwe Bol director then this is just FAIL.

Josh Holloway for sure. I know the guy hasn't had much work since Lost, but watch any of the major Sawyer episodes... he exudes bad assery. I've always thought he'd rock the Solid Snake role hard. If they don't go with Josh Holloway, I still hope they go with a relatively unknown. Ben Affleck was mentioned? No way. As for director, Christopher Nolan would be bad ass indeed but I dunno if he wants to start another franchise.

I think Josh Holloway would make for a great Solid Snake. Roll the dice Hollywood! Make him a star! But alas, they'll probably cast Alex Pettyfer or Paul Walker or some other vapid actor completely underserving of the role.

Holy crap! I was just gonna say that. Seriously, there were moments I had while watching Lost where I was taken out of the Lost story just thinking about how badass Josh Holloway would be in the title Solid Snake role.
