Production on Guardians of the Galaxy has already begun! Details on how Rocket Raccoon will be brought to life!

Feb. 13, 2013by: Alex Maidy

With filming not set to begin in London until June, it should come as no surprise that the crew working on GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is already working their tails off to get the movie ready to shoot. With a possible came by Iron Man to help establish the connections within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, James Gunn and his staff do not have a lot of time to get their ducks in a row.

Executive producer Victoria Alonso shed some light on where things stand in the development of Rocket Raccoon and Groot, completely CGI characters, in an interview over at Cinema Blend:

“We’re going to do a combination. You can’t do any motion capture with a raccoon – they won’t let you put the suit on [laughs]. But we will do rotomation, probably, for some of the behavior. Rocket will have his own personality, of course, and clearly we can’t do mocap on a tree, per se, but we definitely will have performers to emulate what James Gunn will lead to be the behavior and the performance. He’s very clear on where he wants to take the characters.”

With those rumors of Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler being sought for voice roles in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, could there be motion capture work in it for them as well? I would think that would be very likely. With the success of Andy Serkis in RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES and the LORD OF THE RINGS films, using the actor to completely inhabit the role will make the film seem a little more realistic. With the story and characters being so completely insane, it needs to be grounded in some sort of realism for it to work and just animating the character will not achieve that.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY will hit theaters on August 1, 2014.

Joe Pantoliano

That's the first voice I heard in my head when I thought talking raccoon. I think he'd be great. Definitely DO NOT Want Adam Sandler.

Forget Carrey & Sandler...

...Just have Andy Serkis do Rocket Raccoon and be done with it. He'd be perfect.

This could be really cool

What will probably happen is this: in the opening sequence the Guardians deal a major blow to Thanos' forces, the equivalent of blowing up the Empire's Death Star but before they even have a chance to celebrate Thanos brings all of his forces to bear against those responsible! The rebels are decimated (much like what happened on Hoth in Empire) and forced to run from Thanos' forces. The Guardians spend most of the movie on the run from Thanos. The rebels are decimated (much like what happened on Hoth in Empire) and forced to run from Thanos' forces. The Guardians spend most of the movie on the run from Thanos. Starlord finds a way to reopen the portal that was opened at the end of Avengers and he brings the Guardians to Earth but meanwhile Thanos has been collecting infinity gems and with five gems he now has the power to keep the portal open and send his forces to Earth. That's a movie right there.

EDIT: Better yet, Thanos uses the Infinity Gems to open up dozens of portals all over the Earth. The Avengers can't be everywhere: the only hope is for a team of Avengers to take the battle to Thanos and defeat him in his own universe.

EDIT: There was a line in Empire "You can't enter hyperspace without navigation: you could find yourself coming out of hyperspace in a star". I'd love to see either in this movie or in a Star Wars movie ships traveling through the center of the galaxy and some blowing up because they passed too close to a star. Maybe the Guardian's ship is in the galactic core and Thanos causes a nearby star to go Nova and the only way to escape is to cross over to another universe.

Whoa, sounds like this film is gonna be really sexy. ;-)

1 but not both

I'm fine with Sandler or Carrey as Rocket's voice but for Groot I think it should be someone more like JEJ or Michael Clarke (rip). While I don't agree with "no one cares" I do think killing them in their own movie would establish Thanos as a credible threat.

Excited for this film, but I really hope that they don't go with Carrey or Sandler. They need someone like a Sam Rockwell or a Jon H. Benjamin. Or they could go all badass and cast Timothy Olyphant who does a spot on impression of Clint Eastwood or Josh Holloway. I even think Willem Dafoe would be a great choice too.

I'm worried that the racoon (more than the thing that looks like a tree - is it actually a tree???) is going to be hard thing to sell and if so...by tying it in to the Avengers...could affect that adversely. Okay...it's all make believe...I mean...c'mon...a green giant...but in a world of fantasy...even a gun trotting, talking racoon, is going to be really problematic. Why couldn't they just make it some alien species not known to man...why'd it have to be a racoon? In any case, I really

In any case, I really like Shasbot4-4' suggestion that they all be killed or a large portion of the team be killed (preferably the racoon and the tree thing). The benefit of this is to not only doubly emphasis how tough Thanos is....we'll avoid having to see Cap, Iron Man, Nick Fury et al having to have a talk with a racoon and Marvel don't completely kill off a potential new franchise...should the film be a success....though should the film be a success...why do I have a sneaky suspicion that a certain racoon is going to steal the show!

Thank you.....I've been worried about the same thing. A raccoon...completely COMPLETELY outside the direction and them of every Marvel movie in Phase 1. I think it's a huge mistake. You've put your finger on it nicely though...if I have to see Nick Fury attempt to have a serious conversation with a fucking RACCOON I am checking out of these movies.

I guess he actually is an alien from a different world (called halfworld) hopefully the only real connection to the avengers is thanos and maybe ironman finding them destroyed after thanos is done with them

Just watched the video

The fact that there doesn't seem to be an Adam Warlock, Gamora or Quasar in this movie means there could be a sequel planned already.

I read a couple of Rocket Raccoon stories in my youth, and they were actually really cool, so this isn't a character that worries me if they get him right. It's a different slant to the marvel cinematic universe, but should be entertaining. They're taking a chance by pushing these characters, and I'm actually glad they're willing to try instead of going with safer options.

TheRealKalEl I don't know anything about Rocket Raccoon but obviously assumed he was an alien...that just happens to look like a raccoon. I could live with that...but given that he's actually got the "Raccoon" in his name, I assume that's what he actually is - an alien raccoon (unless the half human guy gave him that name coz he looked like an animal from his home planet). I'd be in favour of Marvel changing this character somewhat for the movie....perhaps dropping the raccoon part of his

Of course…if this movie’s only connection with the other movies will be Thanos…and will never be heard of again, perhaps Marvel can get away with this.

hopefully they will change it a little, i agree, a talking raccoon is a bit out there even in a universe with gods, super soldiers and a giant green monster.....ive been looking at this movie as a thanos origin (or atleast to explain him more to people) more than anything

Mutant ninja turtles? That's fine. They're great. I remember them fondly from my childhood

An alien humanoid raccoon? Unheard of! This is gonna suck! I've never read the comic! Too unrealistic!

Where does Iron Man fit into this? I was comparing two anthropomorphic characters, one that makes sense and is fine and well to people and one that isn't for some reason.

Iron Man fits in because (a) he's supposed to have a cameo in this movie, (b) GotG is an official part of Marvel's "Phase II" series (c) Thanos in GotG is the same Thanos as in Avengers 2 (d) GotG as a whole is set in the same world as Iron Man and the other Avengers.

So, my point -- TMNT is fine by itself, but would be stupid if mixed in with the Marvel Avengers movies. GotG might be fun BY ITSELF, but to say that a talking Raccoon "fits" into the universe as they have set it up to this

I'm really worried that a fighting raccoon is going to make this whole thing look really stupid. There's going to be a talking/fighting raccoon in The Avengers 2?

I don't get why of all the characters marvel has they decided to go with guardians of the galaxy ? I'm not sold on this movie and I don't think the public is gonna shell out money for it. This better be the best marvel movie made to date or it could end up it's least profitable fanboy talk!

Kill Them!

Have the Guardians of the Galaxy battle it out with Thanos, and have them all get killed in the end. Nobody cares about them anyway. Then when the Avengers have to fight Thanos, you know he is a bad motherfucker, and it might not go well.

I like it, although marvel might not want to kill a potential franchise but maybe they could have thanos really put a beating on the guardians on his way to earth, but your right the guardians should not come out on top in this movie because if they do thanos doesnt seem like much of a threat to the avengers

It's the only path that can save Marvel, since they seem unwilling to step back from the brink on this dumbass movie. It's not perfect though...you still will have a world where talking Raccoons are allowed to exist.

Not Thrilled...So Far...

I was a fan of the earlier Guardians with Vance Astro, Charlie 27, etc. This latest incarnation doesn't thrill me. I'll just have to keep a close eye on it.

Well if the rumors are true about planet hulk they would have to wait until after avengers 2, and if thats the case it will def be worth the wait, if you havent seen or heard anything about it you should check it out if your a hulk fan, antman tho, opens up a whole new story line for the avengers and would introduce the wasp and ultron for avengers movies down the line, plus ant man has some great story lines, esp with the split personality he develops, he may not look like much but he can def

The guardians im less familiar with but if nothing else it will introduce the general audiences to thanos (the purple guy at the end of avengers as a lot of people would call him) and it will probably show us why he is such a big threat and just what he is capable of.

I'm 100% with you on this one, OS. Ant Man and a talking fucking Raccoon...just scream "goofy" to me.

Of course the thumbs down on your post tells me that a bunch of fanboys living in their parents' basement are nerdgasming over these two movies....and somehow Marvel wants to channel that weird energy and ruin a more or less "normal" series of movies with goofiness.
