Promo poster rises for Beware the Batman animated series on Cartoon Network

Mar. 29, 2012by: Paul Shirey

Late last year Cartoon Network announced that they'd be partnering with DC to create an all-new Batman animated series.  Today, we have new details and the first promo poster for the series, which is called BEWARE THE BATMAN.

Here's the poster:

And here's the official word from Cartoon Network:

A cool, new take on the classic Dark Knight franchise, Beware the Batman incorporates Batman’s core characters with a rogues gallery of new villains not previously seen in animated form. Along with backup from ex-secret agent Alfred and lethal swordstress Katana, the Dark Knight faces the twisted machinations of Gotham City’s criminal underworld led by the likes of Anarky, Professor Pyg, Mister Toad and Magpie.

Produced by Warner Bros. Animation, this action-packed detective thriller deftly redefines what we have come to know as a “Batman show.” Featuring cutting-edge CGI visuals to match the intricate twists and turns of the narrative, Batman steps out of the shadows and into the spotlight for an entirely new generation of fans. With WBA’s Sam Register executive producing, and Batman Beyond’s Glen Murakami and Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated’s Mitch Watson producing, Beware the Batman, based on characters from DC Comics, is coming soon to Cartoon Network!

I'm intrigued by this project, mostly since they are using some of Batman's newer villains.  Professor Pyg is a decidedly nasty villain who replaces victim's faces with his own "masks" which seal to their faces permanently and are rather horrid looking.  He's pretty twisted, so it'll be interesting to see how they handle him in the series.  As for Alfred being an ex-agent, well, that's nothing new to comic readers as it's a well-known fact that Alfred served in the military, which is one of the reason's he's such an asset to Batman/Bruce Wayne.  He also makes a mean eggs benedict.

BEWARE THE BATMAN is set to air sometime in 2013.  Keep your eyes peeled for more promotional material as we get closer to a premiere date.

Extra Tidbit: Personally, I don't think they'll ever top Bruce Timm's Batman: The Animated Series, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't try. Batman is a great character across all platforms (comics, movies, TV), so there's no reason not to continue to explore his mythos.

In a perfect world...

Batman: The Animated Series from the 90's would have been like Simpsons and South Park; it should have gone on for a long time. That's a show I'm sure I'd never get tired of watching.

Like most people are saying, I'm not crazy about the character design. It looks like a cross between the 90's animated series and the TMNT movie. I won't make any final judgments until I see it in action though.

ick, I hate the animation, and its interesting that they are using Professor Pyg. He had a really twisted story in the comics, but he hasn't been heard of since. Hope he survived the reboot.

This looks bad. To me, Bruce Timm's Batman: The Animated Series is THE definition of Batman in an animated form. I still watch it from time to time.

I'm kind of digging the animation style. Strongly reminiscent of the epic '90s series. And before some haters get on the whole 'Alfred as superpsy' angle...in the comics its well known in some continuities he's got a background as a combat surgeon (thus able to patch up Batman's injuries) and former spy.

Indeed, remember that in 'The Dark Knight' Alfred relates that story about hunting bandits in Burma, and in both movies shows some cunning as an adept planner of covert operations (building the batsuit, capturing Lao.) And given Nolan's love for James Bond movies...I would not be surprised if they expand on this angle of Alfred in TDKR.

As for the relatively unknown villains, remember that it was the original Animated Series that made famous such characters as Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, even Two-Face. And of course they even invented one villain we all know and love and secretly hope to marry...Harley Quinn.

No...no, this does not resemble 'Batman The Animated Series' at all. This looks like all the other modern animated t.v. crap that comes out these days.

I'm a big Batman fan, and when I first saw the images I was really upset. There are so many things wrong in that one promo image. There's a huge problem in that they're trying so hard to distance themselves from TAS and even The Batman that they end up with some pretty bad ideas. But I would love to see Alfred make some eggs Benedict, really.

Ill have to see and wait to make judgement on this one. Professor Pyg is an interesting villian to say the least. Maybe they'll have Pink Flamingo as well hopfully.

Pink Flamingo would be pretty cool...again IF they do him right. I mean, the guy's a cannibal. Not sure how that will fly on the DC kids hour on Cartoon Network...

Sorry, but....

This looks like all the other current/modern animated crap style that's out these days. And it does NOT look anything like the 'Batman The Animated Series' style at all. Sorry, but it's shit in my opinion.

Hated the animation style when it was announced but this new poster looks like they touched up the style and made it look a lot better and now im looking forward to it. The Batman and Brave and the Bold were such let downs for me so im hoping to catch a good batman show again. With the way Clone Wars show is im gonna be guessing they may go darker like Bruce Timms just judging by the poster so that just makes me more excited.

Just bring back Bruce Timm & Kevin Conroy. They really did make the best Batman (I even like Mask of the Phantasm better than Nolan's movies).

It's isn't a Batman animated series without Kevin Conroy as the voice of Batman.
