Promo trailer for Disney's Planes attempts to lure you in with a visual feast

05.16.2013

So, earlier today I confessed my appreciation for RIO, which is set to release a sequel next year. Now, I have to go the opposite direction for Disney's PLANES, the non-Pixar spinoff of the unfortunately popular CARS franchise. The first CARS film isn't terrible and I have come to appreciate it after being subjected to repeat viewings, almost in A CLOCKWORK ORANGE fashion. However, CARS 2 soured me beyond reproach and became the first movie that my 3-year-old forced me to walk out of. It was a proud moment.

Now, the once-destined-for-video release PLANES, is taking flight to theaters, much to the shock and dismay of parents everywhere. However, this trailer does a few things right. For one, there's no annoying dialogue to make you hate it more. Second, the animation looks pretty solid despite it not even being Pixar. You can hardly tell the difference. After the abyssmal showing of CARS 2, the franchise has its work cut out in winning back both kids and adults, but I will say that this promo trailer shows some promise.

Take a look:

PLANES, featuring the voices of Dane Cook, Val Kilmer, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, John Cleese, Teri Hatcher, Anthony Edwards, Sinbad, Brad Garrett, and Cedric the Entertainer, takes flight on August 9, 2013 in 3D.

This Cracked Photoplasty entry would honestly make for a more interesting film. [link]

Yah that seems pretty lazy, looks almost like the same plot from Cars just with planes. Well I guess they have billions of dollars they have to spend it on something.

Call me crazy

I actually liked "Cars" and "Cars 2", sure they rank nowhere as high as most other Pixar films but i still found them rather enjoyable. And while i will defend "Cars 2", i have been guilty of bashing this movie.

That said, this trailer was rather fantastic. The sweeping shots and use of that orchestration makes it one of the best produced trailers i've seen in a while, especially for an animated film. I'm still not expecting much from this film and im glad that Pixar's name is nowhere on

Remember, "Toy Story 2" was also created for the DVD market before being brought to the big screen.
