Directorial deity Paul Thomas Anderson has his next project lined up... and he's ready to make you question your faith.

Philip Seymour Hoffman, teaming for the fourth time with Anderson, will be playing the lead role as a character known only as "the Master" (as in "master of ceremonies") in what will be a 1950s period drama. Hoffman's "Master" will be "a charismatic intellectual who hatches a faith-based organization that begins to catch on in America in 1952."

"The core is the relationship between the Master and Freddie, a twentysomething drifter who becomes the leader's lieutenant. As the faith begins to gain a fervent following, Freddie finds himself questioning the belief system he has embraced, and his mentor."

Variety also states the following which I thought was kind of a funny: "The drama does not so much scrutinize self-started churches like Scientology or the Mormons, as much as it explores the need to believe in a higher power, the choice of which one to embrace and the point at which a belief system graduates into a religion."

Whether that's simply publicity-speak to not piss-off half of Hollywood and the TWILIGHT community will remain to be seen. But good GOD do I hope this film pisses somebody off. Controversy! Fun!

The project is lined up at Universal with a proposed budget of $35 million. A decision about whether to greenlight the pic won't come until Anderson delivers a finished script, which will hopefully be soon.

GREAT story
PTA is the best and any story about his next movie gets me excited, I don't care is he's doing a documentary about paint drying, I'll be there. But this movie sounds awesome.

This is the first time i personally want to seek out for myself a PTA film. I've seen all his others of course, but only after huge critical acclaim. A movie about a greedy oil-tycoon character study/period piece isn't exactly a "must-see" for me.

Scientology was also started in 1952.

I'm excited for this one.

I love PTA... BUT as a Mormon, and I'm not even overly defensive, but Variety made a definite jab at my faith in a very subtle way. ALL religions are self started you numb nuts! Islam, Christianity, and Judaism all began with one man... who almost always claim divine guidance.

I'm all about the concept of the film, don't get me wrong, I'm just put off by Variety's less than...

Oh, I also think I'm put off by the comparison to Scientology. You can believe what you want, but if there are two religions that are about as far away on the belief spectrum, its Mormonism and Scientology.

Hence, my point... stupid reporting.

Nice!
This sounds like it could be pretty awesome.

And I have no doubt in my mind that this film will DEFINITELY be misinterpreted by the masses and have some major controversy surrounding it.

Good to hear he's got a new project planned
It's also nice to see PTA give Hoffman the lead. Dude's been working his way up in each flick.
