Public Enemies clip!

PUBLIC ENEMIES was shot on the same camera that David Fincher used for BENJAMIN BUTTON but for some reason, what didn't bother me at all with BUTTON is really bothering me on PUBLIC ENEMIES. The first full clip from PUBLIC ENEMIES is online (which you can view below) and while Fincher's digital was lit and shot to look like film, this just looks digital. I understand that's what director Michael Mann was going for but it just isn't working for me.

Meanwhile, once I shake that Discover Channel dramatization look, I really like what's going on here. What do you think? You can watch the film in HD at Yahoo! or check it out below.

Extra Tidbit: Cinephiles: what is being done in post on BUTTON or ENEMIES that gives us two starkly different images?

actually Public Enemies and Ben Button were filmed on different cameras. Where before Collateral and Miami Vice were filmed with the Vipercam/F900 -- Zodiac and Ben Button were filmed with only the Viper. Public Enemies however was filmed with the Sony F23 and Sony EX-1. The EX-1 is a prosumer camera with a HD raster and was used in small places or places where that it was hard to bring gear -- more or less its a throw away camera.

The key to what makes the images different is (and your dead on) Fincher lights for film and Mann not so much. On a film like Colateral or MV the DP would bump the gain on the camera to a +9/+12 which is almost insane, and adds digital grain. But requires less light and makes it easier to shoot. If anything I agree with Mann's choice (on his films) because of the content. Mann continues to shoot in a Neorealism/French New Wave look, shooting on location and with available light and handheld -- to some extent. As far as PE goes, there are less gain added scenes and before I would throw final judgement out, I'd like to see how it looks in the theatre. But its a different approach, that is for sure.

frame rate

before i start, i love mr mann...
i think the only "video-ey" factor in this clip is the frame rate, it looks like 30fps NTSC. im sure once its either projected on film at 24fps or converted to PAL (25fps) it'll be perfect to those of you used to NTSC video (nothing like PAL!)
