Public Enemies review

12.12.2008

One of my most anticipated movies for 2009 that doesn't feature a man with claws coming out of his hands or giants robots hanging with Shia LaBeouf is PUBLIC ENEMIES. I mean with Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and director Michael Mann all working together on a gangster drama, it's just gotta be quality, right? Luckily a JoBlo.com reader caught a recent test screening in Portland, Oregon and was kind enough to write in with some thoughts on the film. Was it as good as advertised? A woeful disappointment? You'll have to read on to find out... (There are some MAJOR SPOILERS but I'll mark them accordingly so you don't ruin the film for yourself. Though it is based on a true story...)

-----------

I went to see the screening of Public Enemies, on Wednesday night. The new film by Micheal Mann starring Johnny Depp and Christian Bale. The movie is about the "public enemy era" of the 1930's during the great depression, and focuses on the famed gangster / bank robber John Dillinger, played by Depp, and the man sent to capture him Melvin Pervis, played by Bale. The movie also included a vague side story of how the FBI was formed into what it is today.

The film starts off in 1933 with the prison break that Dillinger planned and executed, almost flawlessly. The movie starts with some action and bloodshed which in my opinion is always a good way to get the movie started. We then follow the newly acquired Dillinger gang to a hide away.

At this point, Mann, introduces Pervis, while he is trying to apprehend a famed gangster "pretty boy" Floyd. After Pervis has done his job he is commissioned by J. Edger Hoover to head the man hunt for Dillinger. We also learn of the governments doubts about the FBI and J. Edger Hoover's involvement.

The film continues to follow the chase for Dillinger, and his many exploits that include the famous photograph in which he puts his arm around the prosecuting attorney. His escape from jail with a gun he carved out of a bar of soap. It all ends outside the Biograph Theater (**MAJOR SPOILER ALERT**) where Pervis and his hired help shot and killed Dillinger in the alley next to the theater after this brothel associate gives him up in hopes to avoid deportation.

Micheal Mann has found his perfect blend of drama and action in this picture. As well as he combined his style of handy cam, and set shots. All and all, it was his best film yet. Johnny Depp gets more and more outstanding as an actor every film he makes. Christian Bale, is as he always is... fairly dull. (sorry for any Bale fans out there, I know, Bale was the bomb in Batman yo!... but still) There are tons of cameo's from stars that you'll recognize but can't think of their names off the top of your heads.

I would be surprised if this film doesn't make it's run as a might contender for the best picture of the year in 2009. I would give it a 10/10

Mann Falls short with Dillinger

Mann's Dillinger delivers the worst that Hollywood has to offer, a fine film, completely void of the truth. Only a lazy screen writer would create such a fiction when the facts of the History are so fascinating. Mann, of course has no obligation to create a documentary but why weave a web, 98% of which is fiction when dealing with a historical character. If you want to know the facts go to the FBI site and read their time line on Dillinger. One would hope that Mann has already done this, and

What obligation does Hollywood have when depicting Historical characters? If the craft is simply the linking together of cool pictures and dialogue then why choose an historical figure?

He's probably dull compared to Johnny Depp, but normally he's not. Ever seen American Psycho? Newsies?

This is funny...

"THIS REVIEW FAILS BECAUSE...
This guy had till he said Bale is dull.Fuck this asshole, I never listen to this person ever again. Unless of course he was joking"

I never knew that people could get so upset over someone else's opinion. So much so that they have to make them selfs look so stupid, and be outrightly vulgar. Honestly people should just respect other's opinions and the fact is I don't even think that Bale could really sell a movie based on his name. I think he is also a very

I think he is also a very non-animated actor in a lot of what he does. I is very possible that this person who wrote this isn't saying that he is bad, just a little boring for his taste. That being said. I too am stoked about this movie!!!! I'll be seeing it on opening day!

Read a book morons

These posts are just more proof of how little people read today. The fact that Dillinger was shot and killed outside the theatre is and should be common knowledge NOT spoiler material. Try reading another site besides joblo in order to get your 'news' - no offense Berge.

Looking forward to the movie though with so many great names attached.

Well, Im not savvy when it comes to 1930's history, so, yes, it IS still a spoiler for people who dont know details about this event.

Let me guess, someone will come back and call me stupid for not knowing about dillinger. Sorry. I don't.

Also, I dont get how this guy can give this movie a 10/10 when he claims the Second Male Lead is "Dull". Sorry, but I dont se any movie getting a perfect 10 when the lead actor is "dull".

Either way, Bale isn't dull at all, so I disagree no matter

Either way, Bale isn't dull at all, so I disagree no matter what. Watch American Psycho or the Machinist and tell me he's "dull". I just watched "rescue Dawn" the other night. No "dullness" there.

Maybe he'll be "dull" in T4, but I somehow doubt that too, even if the movie sucks.

Mann is indeed the Man and even though I seem to enjoy Miami Vice more than anyone else EVER, I do believe it was a step backward for him (but I still enjoyed it) so I am looking forward to him returning to his amazing ways.

It's not a spoiler but it is......

If you know history than you know the outcome of John Dillinger's life, but many people aren't aware. The majoprity of people out ther especially kids younger than 18 dont know shit about american history. The best part of the true story is how he was caught, what gave him away outside the theatre.

Not really 'spoilers'...

They're not really 'spoilers' if it's a matter of historical record. A 'Spoiler' would be more along the lines of letting folks know that Vader was Luke's father, before that film had come out. Not that, you know, Lincoln had been shot while watching a play or something...

I, too, only read the last line and I am very excited!!! I know a lot of people who can't wait to see this movie, mostly because it was shot real close to my hometown in Wisconsin and everyone I know was going nuts that Johnny Depp was there. I can't wait to see this flick!

And @ gameslave, I completely agree with you about Tom Cruise.

Awesome

This is the first time hearing about this film, and here I thought I was always on top of these things.
Michael Mann is a great director, one of my favorite. Miami Vice stunk so I am glad to hear this one is awesome, as it definitely sounds awesome. Crime dramas about the 1930s are always interesting, and bringing Mann's kinetic style to the theme is definitely going to be cool as hell. This is definitely a must-see for me.

ps. how awesome was Tom Cruise in Collateral?! For real, he
