The trailer for PUBLIC ENEMIES will be in theaters this weekend with WATCHMEN but hit online today for your viewing pleasure. One of the rare summer blockbusters that doesn't involve outer space, giant robots, alien invasions or a toy company, PUBLIC ENEMIES instead relies on its concept, its stars (Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Marion Cotillard) and its director (Michael Mann).

I'm just about dying to see this movie but the trailer didn't exactly make me crazy with excitement. The music in the beginning seemed off. Bale once again looks like he's grimacing his way through another movie. But Depp looks like he's having a shitload of fun and that certainly was a little contagious. From the stars, to the plot, to the directing, this movie looks perfect. How the fuck did Miami Vice look shitty?? Digital film is different from all the rest(obviously), it makes it look fucking amazing (to me)a bit low budget and independentish, which is pretty fucking sick from my eyes, if you film whatever your filming correctly while using digital, anything can come out to perfection. As Garret said, i need to change my boxers, cause i just came all over the place, this movie looks good.

...I'm always willing to give Michael Mann a shot, but Miami Vice was god awful, and a big part of that was how shitty it looked. Shooting on digital is not for every project, especially a period piece like this. While this looks far better, picture quality-wise, than Vice did, I'm still not crazy about the way it's shot.



Before anyone starts crying, keep in mind I will see this...

I dig it. The digital approach certainly makes it seem a little more.... well, realistic. I can't recall ever seeing a period piece/biopic that also had a kind of documentary feel to it.



Looks like it'll be fun, and considering that Bale, Depp and Mann are all teaming up for one movie, I'll be there on opening weekend. As will all of you. Even the haters.

This isn't a groundbreaking trailer by any means, but pretty damn cool. Took a moment to get used to the digital format, which in ZODIAC wasn't too noticeable because it wasn't an action film. It's crisper than MIAMI VICE, though, which is good.



Johnny Depp almost always seems to have fun in his movies, so that's no surprise, whereas Christian Bale almost always seems to employ...

I grew up loving any movie with old cars and Tommy guns, so this looks to be right up my alley.



And might I say Billy Crudup looks to be giving one greatest portrayals of J. Edgar Hoover ever captured in movies.



Still meaning to see the Warren Oates movie. Now that guy really LOOKED the part of Dillinger.

Mann almost always delivers and this looks fucking bad ass. It looks like Heat + The Untouchables + Bonnie and Clyde + Collateral. How fucking awesome is that.

When Zodiac came out, I don't think anyone made mention of it being shot in HD (was Benjamin Button shot in HD as well?). I think HD can be made to look good, but it always looks amateurish in Michael Mann flicks.

Miami Vice at least had some reasoning for using that stupid camera, but this movie takes place in the '20s and '30s! It just doesn't work!



As for the rest of it, the only thing I liked was Depp, and that's just a given. I'll pass until I hear a good review.

The trailer is fantastic and the first thing I thought of was "Heat" but during the Depression with Depp as the professional bankrobber and Bale as the man hellbent on bringing him down. This movie just climbed to the top of my list for 2009.

Oh man, that was terrific. I don't really give two shits what Mann shot it on, as long as it's a good flick and that trailer certainly suggests it's going to be just that! That scene with Depp and Bale in the jail gave me chills seeing my two favorite actors together on screen.



I don't think Bale was showcased enough to give an accurate judgment of his performance. After all,...

I don't think Bale was showcased enough to give an accurate judgment of his performance. After all, the movie is about John Dillinger and the trailer rightfully focused on him. And I'm not such a stickler as to complain about the music in a trailer, unless it's painfully obvious it doesn't fit (like Soulja Boy in that FAST AND FURIOUS trailer). The music seemed to fit fine to me.



But I will say it was a bit out of place to have that "Academy Award Winner" title displayed with Marion Cotillard's name. If they really want to market it that way they could have at least put "Academy Award Nominee" with Johnny Depp, the dude's been nominated three times (maybe a fourth for this?). That's my only real complaint about the trailer and it's not even that big of a deal. I'm just as stoked, well more so now, to see this flick!

It worked for Collateral because it added a mood and modern realism to Los Angeles but that was Collateral. I've shot on video, HD and 35mm and to this day nothing beats film. Just because it's cheaper, faster and easier to shoot on doesn't mean it's going to up the quality and in most cases it certainly does not.Considering this is a crime drama period piece, film would have amplified the grit and magic of the content.Why Mikey!?! Why!?!



(big sigh....)



That being said, I'm still really looking forward to seeing it. Johnny Depp looks like he's gonna kick major ass in this.

Concerning this trailer, Michael Mann doesn't disappoint. And neither does Johny Depp. I wanted to see more of Christian Bale, but that's okay for now. I will see this one at the theater.

That's something that bugged me with the Inglorious Basterds teaser - it looked like any other WWII movie, despite QT's claims that the look would be unique. Whoever says that you can't tell the difference between viper digital cameras and 35mm are blind. It's bearable when you keep the camera still, but shooting action makes it look like a home movie.

i think the whole look of the film just adds a new kind of look for the genre. it looks real and kind of modern, which is pretty cool. and depp and cotillard sold it for me; bale, not so much. but that's judging from the trailer.

Believe, I'm very excited to see this movie, just that the trailer seemed off. It seems that Michael Mann is officially married to his digi-cam. It worked well with his modern flicks (i.e. Miami Vice, Collateral), but not so much here. Still, a disappointing trailer is no indication of the movie itself.

If it wasn't a Michael Mann film, I'd think that this would be horrible. I like Depp and Bale, but this could have been dreadful Hollywood crap if someone like Michael Bay had directed it.

Trailer wasnt dramatic, exciting, or captivating. Infact it was boring, with as Mike said an out of place soundtrack. And after that amazing Terminator Salvation trailer?

Im a huge Michael Mann fan, my favorite movie is HEAT, so believe me Im dissapointed.
