Quentin Tarantino releases his Best of 2011 list

Jan. 16, 2012by: Paul Shirey

Quentin Tarantino has just released his own best of list for 2011 and it’s about as odd as you might expect. I guess it’s hard to guess what some of our favorite filmmakers may or may not like, but it turns out their choices are just as varied and strange as our own. We all have our dark horses each year (mine was IMMORTALS and BATTLE: LOS ANGELES), so for Tarantino to include floating turds like THE THREE MUSKETEERS and RED STATE on his list, it’s not much of a shocker.

What IS a shocker is that not only did Tarantino include a “Best of” list, but also a “Nice try” list, which from that simple context seems like a “Worst of” list. Perhaps he just felt they didn’t live up to the hype, but I think it’s safe to say that the only film that no one had expectation for was DRIVE ANGRY. Seems like a dick move to me, especially without clarification. I thought lists like that were reserved for movie news site asshole writers.

“ahem.”

Lest we forget, Tarantino started out as a “JoBlo” like the rest of us, genuinely loving (and hating) movies, so I suppose he is entitled an opinion, but then there’s that whole thing about “shitting where you eat.”

Check out the “Best of” and “Nice try” lists and click HERE to see the full list.

What do you guys think about his selections?

TOP 11 of 2011

1. MIDNIGHT IN PARIS
2. RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES
3. MONEYBALL
4. THE SKIN I LIVE IN
5. X-MEN: FIRST CLASS
6. YOUNG ADULT
7. ATTACK THE BLOCK
8. RED STATE
9. WARRIOR
10. THE ARTIST / OUR IDIOT BROTHER (tie)
11. THE THREE MUSKETEERS

NICE TRY

1. DRIVE
2. HANNAH
3. DRIVE ANGRY
4. REAL STEEL

Extra Tidbit: Anyone else feel like JACKIE BROWN belongs on a "Nice Try" list?

In regards to Drive...

I saw Drive after hearing all the hype, I thought it was good not great, and don't understand the universal love its getting. Movies are in such an awful state right now, (2011 being one of the worst years in recent memory), that I think people are overrating Drive. Its barely a story, there's hardly any dialogue, or character development and I didn't buy the love story for a minute. Most of what happens is cliche and predictable. Other than a handful of good scenes (especially the elevator scene) and a killer soundtrack the film was just mediocre to me. Again I thought it was a good movie and I'm glad a saw it, but I'm not in a rush to see it again.

I'm I the only one who doesn't get the hype behind this film? I guess it is really un-hollywood but that doesn't necessarily mean it's great.

I believe he ment Hannah Montana movie, and not hanna. Suprised to see Drive and Real Steel on that list because those are the 2 Im most waiting to seen when they get released to DVD.
As for Jackie Brown Love the AK-47 part. I have to give him props for having Warrior, Moneyball, and Attack the block on his like list, but its a shame to not have Thor, or Captain America on there?

Saw Drive lastnight, so underrated imo. It was damn good. It's feel reminded me of early 90's movies.

Rest of the list

The list was removed from the source but here's the rest, courtesy of The Playlist. Among the worst films of 2011 Tarantino mentions Sucker Punch, Insidious, Rampart, Paranormal Activity 3 and Meeks Cutoff
Under films he liked outside the top ten he mentions both Green Lantern and Green Hornet. WTF? See the link for full list galore

I enjoyed the hell out of seeing these lists just because they were so different than most critics end of year lists. QT is the kind of guy that doesn't care if no body else enjoyed the film, if he liked it thats all that matters. I feel too many critics put films on their lists just because everybody else is doing it. If QT hated Drive but had a blast watching something like 3 Musketeers so what? Sometimes I just want to watch a movie were I can turn my brain off and just have a good time.

Honestly I would much rather watch something like that than turn on the snooze fest that is The Kings Speech.

By the way I think Red State deserves to be much higher on his list. I loved the crap out of that movie and think it's one of the best films I've seen in years. Is it perfect? By no means. But its original and smart, something we don't get in movies nowadays.

I'm an enormous Kevin Smith fan, and I have to say that Red State is the definition of a "nice try". Great concept and opening with a somewhat shoddy followthrough. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it either. I'd have flip-flopped it's position with Drive's.

I hate ties also.

It feels cheap.

Tidbit...No! Jackie Brown might not be a "cool" QT movie but it's one of, if not the best of his films.

Glad to see Warrior in his Top Ten, but really I just don't trust QT's taste in movies. He's iconic for having poor taste in movies and loving schlock and B-movie aesthetics, taking those tropes and putting his own unique spin on them to create very entertaining movies, but would I call him up and ask for a recommendation of what to see on a Friday night? Hell no.

I hate it when people put "ties" on their top ten list. You're kind of taking the point of it being a top ten list and throwing it out the window. The convention of ties works best when there's a defined grading system, like points in a sports game. Since opinions on movies are subjective, the notion they can tie on a measurable scale is unreasonable. Why not just say "Here's my top ten best movies list: these eight movies all tie for #1, and another fourteen movies tie for #2!"

I haven't seen THE THREE MUSKETEERS, but how did any of those movies get on the "nice try list" and it made it onto the top 11 films he liked list? I mean Hannah was pretty BA! I thought Attack The Block was a little overrated for all the hype it got, though I did like it.

Cool to see Apes so high and Idiot Brother (severely underrated) up there. Very surprised to see Drive at #11 though. Haven't see Three Musketeers, but it looked horrid, so also surprising.

Proving once again that taste in movies is completely subjective. Like the movies QT makes, but despite reading this article, could really care less which ones he likes

1. Nice try does not mean worst. According to the comments on the link, there was an actual "worst of" list that was later deleted for some reason. From what I can gather, it included Sucker Punch, Meek's Cutoff, Insidious, and Rampart.

2. Quentin Tarantino has probably seen more movies than we will in our entire lifetimes. He is also a lover of shlock as well as fine art. The things he looks for in a movie could be completely different from what we look for. Hell, maybe he chose the Three

We'll never know, because he hasn't explained his choices.

He could put the Devil Inside as his number one choice of 2012 and I wouldn't care as long as Django Unchained is good.

I respect the fact that QT never picks the obvious films every one picks because they feel the need to. He picks films he genuinely likes himself. i like that there are some out of ordinary movies on his list. Who is anyone here to criticize him for his choices?

The man is not just a brilliant filmmaker but a fan of movies in general of all genres. I am really looking forward to Django Unchained with great interest much like any film he has made. Love all of his movies, even Jackie Brown

If you would've been more observant you'll notice that my avatar is blowing her brains out which should of given you a clear indication of how I felt about that this TCM remake.
I am fully aware that filmmakers borrow from others and I am actually okay with it as I loved "The Thing" remake (1982) . Both movies (The Thing) were completely different because John Carpenter choose to actually use his own vision and ideas rather than scalping the entire original.
If you would do the research

If you would do the research (Google) you can easily dig up and read about QT's antics. QT doesn't just rip off a little bit from each movie that inspires him, he rips off everything meaning the entire plot-line , camera angles, and action scenes (Choreography).
You can see this on a website where a reviewer compared side by side the old movie "Lady Snowblood" to QT's "Kill Bill". [link]
Ringo Lam's "City on Fire" (1987) QT stole everything from this movie and made "Reservoir Dogs" (1992). Watch the trailer here [link]
Of course QT denied he ever watched "City on Fire" before he ever made "Reservoir Dogs" which clearly shows he's a hack and liar.
"Inglorious Bastard" 1978 - I actually thought QT blew it on this remake as the original 1978 version was far better.

Now QT's next directorial hacking job will be stealing from "Django" (1966).
But QT is such a genius because he's going to add the word "UNCHAINED" to the title. (Hint of sarcasm)
My point to all this is that there is a difference between borrowing from films that inspire you as a director and doing what QT does - Stealing every aspect of the movie itself adding nothing original whatsoever to the remake and taking all the credit leaving the unknown original movie he stole from lost in time.
Blows my mind that people continue to call QT an artist as a director. I believe QT should stick to writing rather than being director.
The truth is there just search for it. I did and I suggest you do too otherwise it's obvious you will be one of his many fans that refuse to believe it because you like him as a person not caring that he's a hack. It's definitely up to you if you want to keep tossing QT's salad allowing him to steal your money.

First, it's really sad to see so many people not able to grasp the meaning of "Nice Try." How do you muck up comprehending those 2 words?? His "Nice Try" list does *not* mean worst of.
As for the list, I think it's cool to see different movies on a best of list for a change. However, I still would have to disagree with a number of them. Red State should have been in his "Nice Try" list. Smith almost had that one right, but screwed up the second act.

Agree with Meat Bat

"True Romance" and "Natural Born Killers" to me were the only remotely talented thing that QT ever wrote but did not direct. I cannot give QT credit for writing "Pulp Fiction" because he burned Roger Avary. QT did not give Roger Avary writing credit until years later. Without Asian Cinema QT would be lost as he really has no vision in film making. All of QT's movies can be traced back to older source. It is one thing to use things from older movies for your own but to completely steal the

It is one thing to use things from older movies for your own but to completely steal the entire plot-line which QT's does shows he lacks artistic vision. WANT PROOF?
CITY ON FIRE (1987)Plot ->An undercover cop, played by Chow Yun-Fat, infiltrates a gang of thieves who plan to rob a jewelry store. The film shows how he infiltrates the gang.
Reservoir Dogs (1992) Plot->After a simple jewelery heist goes terribly wrong, the surviving criminals begin to suspect that one of them is a police informant.

If you type QT's name and just try and search the web you'll be amazed on what you'll find proving that QT is a cheating, backstabbing hack which makes him fit right in at Hollywood.

QT thinks Eli Roth makes good horror movies and thinks american idol is one of the best shows on TV. Tarantino is a god to nerds only, the rest of us only like Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction and the Kill Bill movies. Tidbit: Death Proof and overly talkative, little-to-no actioner Inglorious Basterds and its completely dumb ending also belong on the "Nice Try" list.

I am not surprised one bit to see the movie "DRIVE" on QT's nice try (Worse)list. It's very clear QT is jealous and fears Nicolas Refn, a director who has actually brought some much needed originality back to film making in Hollywood. To all the Die-hard QT fans out there who wish they can secretly toss his salad are probably foaming at the mouth to give me a thumbs down. Before you do ask yourself how in the fuck could you possible put the atrocious Red State and the Three Musketeers above

some good some bad

I'm a little surprised by this to be honest, especially since a year ago my list was pretty much on the same page as his, but now? Granted I haven't seen Three Musketeers (and I probably never will) and it's nice to see Our Idiot Brother in there(very good flick) but the Nice Try list just amazed me. 2 and especially 1 are easily in my top 10...
also I understand why he would have Midnight on top but when not in the past, that was such an annoying movie, dear god!

Joking?

It really seems like this is a list just to get people a little riled up, and some of it is just to be funny...

I mean THE ARTIST/OUR IDIOT BROTHER (tie)? Haha..no. Both Weinstein Company films by the way

But who knows? It seems like famous directors usually have somewhat odd taste once they really get into the business, you get to know people personally...you hear about on set incidents...it can sway your opinion.

Also, who cares? He could say DRIVE was the worst movie he saw this

Also, who cares? He could say DRIVE was the worst movie he saw this year and that doesn't make DRIVE the worst movie of the year. No need to take it personally...

In any case, one of Stanley Kubricks favorite movies was THE JERK, which kind of seems odd, but completely understandable at the same time.

So, not to go in to the absurdity of Red State and Three Musketeers being on this list. What I thought was hilarious was the nice try list were all movies that felt very Tarantino. I wonder, does he likes his own films?

Also,Jackie Brown was awesome! One of my favorites. I never cared much for Reservoir Dogs, great cast though.

If you would've been more observant you'll notice that my avatar is blowing her brains out which should of given you a clear indication of how I felt about that this TCM remake.
I am fully aware that filmmakers borrow from others and I am actually okay with it as I loved "The Thing" remake (1982) . If you would do the research digging into the negative aspects of QT and his antics that he's continue to pull in Hollywood you'll find that he doesn't just rip off a little bit from each movie. QT

If you would do the research digging into the negative aspects of QT and his antics that he's continue to pull in Hollywood you'll find that he doesn't just rip off a little bit from each movie. QT rips off everything meaning the entire plot-line , camera angles, and action scenes (Choreography).
You can see this on a website where a reviewer compared side by side the old movie "Lady Snowblood" to QT's "Kill Bill". [link]
Ringo Lam's "City on Fire" (1987) QT stole everything from this movie and made "Reservoir Dogs". If you would actually watch it or at least the trailer [link]
You shall see, and of course QT denied he ever watched City on Fire which clearly shows he's a hack.
"Inglorious Bastard" 1978 - I actually thought QT blew it on this remake as the original 1978 version was better than QT's.
Now QT's next directorial hacking job will be stealing from "Django" (1966).
But QT is such a genius because he's going to add UNCHAINED to the title. (Hint of sarcasm).
My point to all this is that there is a difference between borrowing from films for your own and doing what QT does - Stealing every aspect of the movie itself adding nothing original whatsoever to the remake. Blows my mind that people continue to call QT an artist. But than they just don't know the truth because they have not taken the time to actually search for it. I did and I suggest you do too otherwise it's obvious you will be one of his many fans that refuse to believe the truth and just keep tossing his salad allowing this hack to ride the money train to the bank.

I like Tarantino and I dig a lot of the movies he likes and his fandom, but I can't take a list seriously when it includes Red State and Three Musketeers among the top ten, but puts Drive and Hanna on a "Nice Try" list. Even if you didn't like Hanna or Drive, they were well done films made with a lot of skill and care. Bad movies they are not.

As much as I love Tarantino as a filmmaker, I don't hold much stock in his critic tastes. I did write a 20 page article defending Superman Returns after all.

Three Musketeers wasn't a good film, but it wasn't half as bad as the Green Hornet which nobody complains about. I think That was the worst of 2011.

I agree with most of the list (especially for n1). But THE THREE MUSKETEERS???? Really???????? I can almost understand RED STATE being there... was an ok film, Michael Parks gives a great performance and he is friends with Kevin Smith... so ok, I get it! But really???? THE THREE MUSKETEERS????
Always nice to see some love for WARRIOR and ATTACK THE BLOCK.

EXTRA TIDBIT: not tarantino's best but a great movie!!

Conflicted

I'd call him an idiot for putting RED STATE and THE THREE MUSKETEERS on his list but I can't because he's brilliant.

Tidbit

I feel like Death Proof belongs in a Nice Try list, and Jackie Brown is not Tarantino's greatest achievement (Pulp Fiction), but my personal favorite.

I'd like to see a video where he talks about what worked and what didn't in those movies. But considering two of my favorites made it on his list, I don't care if they're the same thing as what everyone else is liking. I'd like to hear him say what he didn't like about 'em.

A hint of Jealousy from Tarantino

The way i see it, Tarantino putting Hanna (notice how i spelt it correctly..it's not Hannah for f*cksake people!!) & Drive in a Nice Try list is to me a him showing a little bit of jealousy & he's thinking "damn wish i'd been a part of those movies" it's like he's become the god of "cool indie crime flicks" when there's plenty of other great directors that make them just as well! Also a little over people saying crap like "Drive is over rated" and "glad people realising it's crap" WTF? It

It hardly had any marketing...was opened in art house cinemas (at least in Australia) and it's became popular & a cult movie through word of mouth so it's not overrated..it's good because audiences decided it was good..so the minority haven't liked it..big deal, can't please everyone!

Thumbs up from me. I should of actually read your comment before I posted one up above. I agree with you on all levels about how QT is jealous of the director skills that went into Hanna and Drive. Slowly but surely people will eventually start to figure out that he's a hack that rips off Asian cinema. Qt has being doing this for years.

I usually agree with QT's best of lists...but fuckin Three Musketeers? Over flicks like Super 8, MI-4, Drive, and Captain America? I digress.

Extra Tidbit: Fuck no! Jackie Brown is my favorite Tarantino flick, hands down. Its a "damn sight better than okay."

I like his list for the fact that it's different than the usual critics and filmmakers rounding up the same films as their top ten, leaving out the ones that totally deserve it. Even though his list is different, there are some that came to a shocker to me.

I guess his thoughts, just like his movies, are hit or miss with me. My list...both of them would be vastly different but meh, his thoughts.

Well yeah they kind of did, they were animals living in a cage who by the end of the movie SPOILER ALERT WHICH MEANS STOP READING NOW IF YOU DONT WANT ANYTHING SPOILED>>>>>>SERIOUSLY STOP IF YOU HAVENT SEEN THE MOVIE>>>>>>>YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED... by the end of the movie they were extremely smart... more so than a lot of human beings and living free in what would most likely be their own society in the woods.... so yeah they did rise.

Good list. I really do agree with the "nice try" list. Good efforts but not half as good as some pretend.
NICE TRY:
1. DRIVE
2. HANNAH
3. DRIVE ANGRY
4. REAL STEEL
