Quentin Tarantino's Top 20 Films of 2010

01.03.2011

Should ever Quentin Tarantino ever find himself bored in between writing and directing his movies, he could probably have a career as one of the best film critics out there. Sadly we only hear dribs and drabs of what Tarantino likes as far as modern cinema but the auteur recently passed along a list of his favorite movies of 2010 and the results may or may not surprise you.

TOY STORY 3 topped the list and was not the only animated film to make an appearance. Both TANGLED and HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON also made appearances on Tarantino's Top 20 films of 2010. The list was presented to the Tarantino Archives without commentary with the exception of one comment on Gasper Noe's ENTER THE VOID, which came in at #10 ("Hands down best credit scene of the year … Maybe best credit scene of the decade. One of the greatest in cinema history.").

Looks like Tarantino is a big Jonah Hill fan as both of the actor's summer comedies - CYRUS and GET HIM TO THE GREEK - made the list. Love that ANIMAL KINGDOM is getting some major love as, so far, it seems to be getting ignored during Oscar season.

Here is Tarantino's list below and I'm curious to see what you find interesting, surprising, correct, incorrect, etc. about the list below. I'd love to have just a little explanation on some of these choices but for now this'll have to do.

1. TOY STORY 3
2. THE SOCIAL NETWORK
3. ANIMAL KINGDOM
4. I AM LOVE
5. TANGLED
6. TRUE GRIT
7. THE TOWN
8. GREENBERG
9. CYRUS
10. ENTER THE VOID
11. KICK-ASS
12. KNIGHT AND DAY
13. GET HIM TO THE GREEK
14. THE FIGHTER
15. THE KING'S SPEECH
16. THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT
17. HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON
18. ROBIN HOOD
19. AMER
20. JACKASS 3-D

Extra Tidbit: Hmmm, ENTER THE VOID was on the Top 10 lists of Tarantino, Edgar Wright and Guillermo del Toro.

I love Tarantino but...

I can honestly say that Robin hood should not come close to being on that list. Especially when Inception is not on that list and is my #1 movie of 2010.

Aside from that, seeing this list tells me a lot about the kind of year it was for Cinema..

Also Jack-ass 3D and #1 going to Toy Story 3?

really?

A solid Top 10

But Get Him to the Greek over The Fighter AND The King's Speech? I understand Knight & Day but really, Get Him to the Greek? I'd need the kind of explanation only Tarantino can provide.

Scott Pilgrim?

It's bumming me out not to see Scott Pilgrim on anybodys top 10/20 list for the year.

I mean sure, it's no Inception or true Grit, but the film's aesthetic is pretty damn awesome?!

But hey ho, everyone has their own opinions I guess, and I suppose that's why we all love films...

Ah yes! Who else than my man Quentin Tarantino to finally back me on Knight And Day being fucking awesome. 9/10 in my book.

The rest of the list makes a lotta sense too except for I Am Love (4/10) and Greenberg (3/10) which I just fucking hated.

And people don't worry if you don't get why Enter The Void is on all those top 10 lists. It's already too late for you.
Just kidding, that flick is pretty out there so it's understandable that a lot of people either love it, hate it or don't

It's weird to see Enter the Void on so many people's lists. I enjoyed it, but I didn't think it was "best of the year list" material. I agree with Tarantino on the credits sequence, though. And while a lot of his choices for this list is odd, and some glaring omissions (Inception), is that really surprising from this guy?

I'm glad Inception did not make his list. Finally somebody who isn't busy tripping over themselves to kiss Nolan's balls...... Few of them are here on the comments as well.

Maybe he didn't see 127 hours or inception. He has a right to his opinion. Just because he liked Knight and Day doesn't make him an idiot. We all have guilty pleasures.

I'm not going to attack him for his opinions, of course he's entitled to them (Though, Robin Hood, really?), I do find it kinda odd Black Swan or Inception didn't make it, but to each their own. I'm sure most of our lists would look pretty much the same give or take a couple movies.

Some of these comments are just depressing.

Do some of you not understand what opinions are? Other people are allowed to like certain movies more or less than you did. It's not a difficult concept. And just because some movies didn't make it into his Top 20, doesn't necessarily mean that he didn't enjoy them.

A good list. Sure, I haven't seen all those films yet and there are some I wouldn't put in my list, but it's not like the guy put Marmaduke, Jonah Hex, Clash of the Titans, or Gulliver's Travels in there. I can agree wtih Toy Story 3 being the best of the year.

Well...

It could be he just really likes Tom Cruise, Russell Brand and Russell Crowe and maybe there's something about Leonardo Decaprio that rubs him the wrong way. It's a bit disturbing because he is often asked to judge at film festivals, including Cannes, so he really is a part time movie critic. Ah but aren't we all to some extent? When this site recently put up a top ten movies list there was a complaint that Kick Ass wasn't on the list. Well, here it is. Don't we all start watching movies

I guess he's judging movies based on what kind of movies they are (you can't compare The Town and Kick-Ass, it doesn't change the fact they're both great), and, as an action/comedy, Knight & Day was one of the best of the year.

It was in the same vein as True Lies or Mr. and Mrs. Smith. True. I think the script needed work though. I suspect it was hurt by the writer's strike. Seriously, they were after Cruise's character because they had accused him of stealing something and he actually had stolen it but it was because he wanted to protect it. Huh? Say that again?

Get over it

This is his list of movies. There was no panel, to make sure someone didn't get ripped off at an award ceremony. Get the fuck over it. lol There are plenty of movies that you people loved that never won an award, just as I'm sure there are plenty of award winning movies that you people hated. Maybe he has different priorities to the movies he likes. Like replay value. I've seen Titanic and Scary Movie. Titanic was a much higher rated movie but I have to be in the mood to watch it. I can watch

Look, I'm not bashing on Tarantino, but like Stephen King before him, some of those picks are purely there to be controversial and make people raise their eyebrows. I'm not as in love with Inception as most are, but to include things like Knight and Day and Jackass 3D and NOT Inception or Black Swan is just silly. I’m sure his reasoning is that he had fun with those movies, they were a good time at the cinema… but we’re talking about the twenty BEST films of the year. I can't take this

Curiously. "Somewhere" is nowhere to be found, even though his jury gave it the top prize at Venice.

I could have obtained this list from any mainstream critic, i expected something a bit more unusual for someone who prides himself on being somewhat "unusual"

I'll make a note not to bother with any further best of lists in T-boy's future

I am not as upset as some people about the lack of some of the big blockbusters or indies like Inception or Black Swan... I personally just think it's refereshing to see films like Tangled, Kick-Ass, and others that are just meant for pure entertainment, bravo for not taking yourself too seriously... HOWEVER, Robin Hood to me was one of the biggest flops of 2010. It was completely choppy, jumbled and I was bored about 20 mins into the film... before I judge to hard or go off on a huge tangent. I

Good list...

Kick ass seriously underwhelmed me and I was a little upset to not see The Black Swan on there. One thing I completely agree with QT on is leaving out Inception. While well made and very pretty... it only struck me as pretty good, nowhere near a masterpiece. I laughed a little at Toy Story being number one. It deserves it.

The thing about Tarantino is that he probably made some of these picks based on a single scene in the movie. I doubt Toy Story 3 would be as high as it was without the Cool Hand Luke references. Who knows about Knight and Day or Robin Hood, though? All Robin Hood made me do is long for Costner's mullet and Alan Rickman's Sheriff of Nottingham.

That maybe not everyone is all gaga over Black Swan and Inception? I haven't seen Black Swan yet, but as good as Inception was (amazing, more like), I can understand why it wasn't in the top 20.

Saying the man has shit taste and this list is void for not including those two is rather ridiculous. The man is entitled to like movies as he sees fit.

I'm more surprised that the man who brought us scalped Nazis put Toy Story in number 1.

taratino likes a lot of crappy movies and shows. e.g. he thinks the world of eli roth and thinks american idol is one of the best shows ever.

the guy's pretty weird when it comes to entertainment. pulp fiction and reservior dogs were great, but everything else is just homages to turd movies he likes

I hope this isn't in order. I don't get it. I like Tarantino, but some of these comments underneath are kind of ridiculous. To say "I think it's better to formulate your own opinion and don't just immediately buy into the hype." I think saying that kind of crap is pretentious in itself. Obviously, people today can't form there own opinion and must go with the "hype". WRONG! To each his own. I just hope these weren't in order. Although, I enjoyed Knight and Day, it should not be on here.

Proving once again that Tarantino knows good film, 5 out of 10 times.

Oh Quentin...

Tisk, tisk. I'm going to be nice and assume that you haven't seen "Black Swan" and "Inception", and that you were stoned when you watched "Robin Hood" and "Knight and Day".

Love this man's taste

Rather than question why titles like Black Swan or Winter's Bone aren't on the list, I just want to hear QT's reasoning behind his picks. The man loves to talk about movies, and I'm sure his 2 cents about the list would be an entertaining read.

Really?

Gotta say I agree with Jig Saw down there...Inception and Black Swan should be on there...at very least Inception...how could a famous director with so much talent not show love to the best movie of the year? I'm sorry but Nolan is the most talented in the game, I just lost a little bit of love for Tarantino with this bogus list.

I respect Tarantino for having his own opinion of movies that is free of pseudo-snobbery. He doesn't pander to the supposed "best of the year" and enjoys movies based on his own personal experience of watching them. After all, does everyone who has an appreciation for film have to like and dislike the same stuff? Does it make you part of some elite group to all like Inception and Black Swan and thumb your nose at something like Robin Hood or Knight and Day? My own experience with movies is

Does it make you part of some elite group to all like Inception and Black Swan and thumb your nose at something like Robin Hood or Knight and Day? My own experience with movies is similar to Tarantino's, I enjoy certain movies that are highly praised and certain movies that are rotten on rottentomatoes. For instance, I enjoyed Alice in Wonderland which was getting a lot of complaints on here when it was nominated for a Golden Globe. I thought Mia Wasikowska was great in it, she's definitely one of the best up-and-coming actresses. And my favorite movie of the year was The Runaways which didn't get any award recognition but is without question the best movie I've seen this year. I hated Inception, Black Swan, The Social Network, and other "award season" movies but loved Winter's Bone and The Kids Are All Right. I think it's better to formulate your own opinion and don't just immediately buy into the hype. That said, I'm not a Tarantino fanboy defending him. As a filmmaker, he hasn't been impressing me lately. And by me saying that, it illustrates my point perfectly.

You hated "Black Swan", "The Social Network", and "Inception"? Do you just hate intelligently written films in general?

I don't think Black Swan and Inception were intelligently written. Black Swan handled its subject matter amateurishly and Inception was nothing more than an Ocean's Eleven type of movie with the gimmick of it being set within the "architecture of the mind". The Social Network felt completely fake. You could argue that the dialogue was "intelligent" since the characters all used big words and run-on sentences but it was the kind of dialogue that isn't even remotely realistic. No human being

No human being comes up with those lines, especially not with the rapid fire pace of its delivery.

I have to respectfully disagree on Inception. It - more than any other action movie in at least the last decade - didn't hook the viewer up to an IV bag of tripe.

The Social Network was trademark Aaron Sorkin, with the use of overlapping dialogue and rapid-fire comebacks. The characters appearing quick-witted and overly verbose was a direct bi-product of their being naturally quick-witted and overly verbose.

No defense for Black Swan, as I have not seen it.

Still, no thumbs down for

I'm actually pretty happy to see Knight and Day up there. Incredible under rated, and easily the most straight up FUN I've had at the theater all year.

The fact that neither Inception or Black Swan are on this list tells me a little something about Tarantino. I mean seriously, Tangled and Knight & Day?

ET: That's because it's a truly amazing movie. I wish more people would get to see it.

I'm surprised by the inclusion of "Knight & Day" and "Robin Hood", they dont belong on this list, in my opinion. Everything else is pretty much spot on.

How do Tarantino's 12th and 18th favorite films not belong in his TOP 20 FAVORITE FILMS LIST?

Looks like a typical Shmoe's list.

But was I the only person on earth slightly underwhelmed with How to Train Your Dragon?
