R you ready for the ratings given to Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and Cloud Atlas?

Jun. 8, 2012by: Alejandro Stepenberg

ALVH shadowy Lincoln

In a development that shouldn't surprise anyone who's been watching the trailers and/or seen a Timur Bekmambetov movie, ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER has been given an R rating by the MPAA for "violence throughout and brief sexuality."

And in a concurrent ratings development that isn't necessarily surprising so much as it is intriguing, CLOUD ATLAS has been give an R rating by the MPAA for "violence, language, sexuality/nudity and some drug use."

ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER slashes its way into cinemas June 22nd, while CLOUD ATLAS does whatever a CLOUD ATLAS does on December 6th.

Extra Tidbit: C'mon Hollywood! I want a rated R pirate movie so that I can make all sorts of bad jokes in my articles!

Am I the only one having a hard time taking the Abraham Lincoln Vapire Hunter movie seriously as an action/horror movie?

Tired of hearing about Cloud Atlas and still not seeing a trailer for it. It's an unconventinal movie and they need to market the shit out of it if they want to gain interest with general audiences. But mostly I just want to see a trailer for my own selfish reasons. Get on it.

Would have been funny if they were rated PG-13 and you made that headline just to mess with us....

I take this as a small sign of Hollywood softening their stance on making any big budget movie PG13.

How in the hell can Timur Bekmambetov and the Wachowskis get an okay from the studio for a R rating so easily, yet Ridley Scott cannot?

Especially Cloud Atlas, which is a nearly three hour, out there, $100 million dollar movie?

Cloud Atlas was not financed by the studio though so it had a lot less risk for Warner Bros who only bought the North American distribution rights. That's partially why Warner Bros didn't finance the movie themselves - cause of the unconventional elements which would have been risky for them in the studio system. Tykwer and the Wachowskis funded their film through overseas money instead, from German and Asian sources mainly. It's not really a studio project.

Judging by the red band trailer, AL: VH will not hold back on the blood, regardless of the rating. No little tweeny boppers coming in like little assholes for this one.

"Brief Sexuality"

Reminder: The female lead in Abe Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

Man I really hope Cloud Atlas lives up to my expectations. I know the Wachowskis are divisive but it just sounds so ambitious and weird and epic that I just can't wait. Or it could be the next Southland Tales I suppose.

I don't know. I quite liked Southland Tales in all its out-thereness.

I sort of did too, but it still didn't even come close to my expectations (which I guess were unfairly high for Richard Kelly)

It won't be another Southland Tales. The script is very good and despite the sprawling nature of it all, it's tightly written and each story gets a full arc (though I think scene-by-scene, Southland Tales is an interesting movie, it just doesn't make much sense when taken one after the other).

Even if the stories don't work together as a cohesive whole in Cloud Atlas (although I think they do) - the film will be enjoyable and understandable on a basic level as an anthology film with six

I can't wait. Most anticipated movie of the year (cause of Tykwer more than Wachowskis on my end).
