Ratatouille spearheads a new trend of Pixar re-releases?

07.14.2010

It wasn't that much of a surprise that TOY STORYs 1 and 2 were both re-released in 3D before the third film came out. It was a way for people to catch up on the series while getting a bit of a new experience at the same time.

But now, rumor has it, Pixar is prepping their other films for 3D conversion, and the one that’s being heavily considered at the moment is RATATOUILLE. Bleeding Cool found the info in a video interview by Hey U Guys.

Ratatouille is one that we’re exploring doing [3D conversion on] and Brad Bird is very open to some changes, you know, some very subtle changes but slight reframings. If a character’s reaching forward and a pinky goes off screen, we’ll adjust the camera and the character a little bit to have the hand on. So that said, if the director’s open to minor modifications on a library title then that’s wonderful and we’re really excited about doing that.

Yeah that sounds…boring as hell. My biggest problem with Pixar 3D has been that you can barely even tell it is in 3D, something I’ve noticed with both TOY STORY 3 and UP. The picture has depth, but that’s about it, and you forget about the 3D effect after about ten minutes or so. Contrast that with Dreamworks or Universal 3D, which is a lot more eye-popping as demonstrated in HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON or DESPICABLE ME.

Would you really pay $14 to see RATATOUILLE again in theaters, but this time with “subtle changes” and “slight reframings”? You wouldn’t want to miss that pinky going off-screen after all!

This is stupid. Pixar you do a lot of things right, but so far 3D, isn’t one of them. Work on that.

Uh I WANT 3D to not be obvious and make me forget that I'm watching a 3D movie. That's the fucking point.

I'm not understanding the "fucking point" here. You want to watch 3D and forget that you are watching 3D? If you want to forget you're watching 3D then why watch a movie in 3D, just watch it in 2D.

I love Pixar films, and yes, this thing made total sense for the first two "Toy Story" movies, but for their other movies? Dear god no!

i do like how they add depth rather then stuff popping off the screen, it makes their worlds seem bigger, but unless they are going to put a 2nd 'camera' in the animation to refilm it all from that slightly different angle that makes it true 3D i wont watch it. no conversions for me.

Take it to the next dimension pixar. Make it smellovision as well as 3d. That way you can enjoy the smells as well as the 3d. Would make for an interesting movie experience.

Yeah, smell-o-vision would be a great idea! I can't wait to watch the compactor scene from Star Wars, all of the Saw movies, and the scene where Harry has explosive diarrhea in Dumb and Dumber. Ooooh yeah, smell-o-vision would be THE BEST.

Stop The 3D Insanity!

Firstly, I love Pixar and Disney and Pixars stuff is wonderful to behold. However, I would NOT pay to see any of the past movies (well maybe the Incredibles, no I'll stick to my guns on that) in 3D. I loved Toy Story 3, but would've liked it just as well (and will when it hits the shelves soon) in plain ol' 2D.

No Pixar...enough is enough.

Well not hip to this particularly, but I can see Monsters Inc in 3D... just imagine that door sequence.. not that it NEEDS 3D, it's a good movie on it's own. But I can see it.

Can we stop with this, please?

It looks like the greedy studios finally found a way to make even more money they don't need. As evidence proves, 3D conversion SUCKS and 3D adds nothing to the film to begin with. I still thought Avatar was the same mediocre movie sans 3D and I've enjoyed 2D versions of movies just as much as the 3D. I can't wait for this fad to die out, but I hope it's after tons of people waste their money on 3D TV's.

Good movies and good stories don't need 3d. I can see the next 10 Pixar flicks in traditional 2d, if they keep doin' good stories.

Obvious cash grab by Disney/Pixar. They're getting worse at it, too. So, so obvious. The original version of the movie was fine. I hope Dreamworks makes a point and doesn't go back and do the same thing.

Eh, Disney used to re-release their movies all the time. But usually it was longer than just a couple years after the original release date. I don't really have a problem if they throw out some filler like this in January or something.

Finding Nemo

I'd go see Finding Nemo in 3D, just to see the amazing underwater lighting and visuals converted to 3D. Ratatouille, not so much

Boring as hell?

Watch this video on TS3's 3D. The steroscopic supervisor explains the EXACT reason why they don't have their 3D pop out at you in your face...in short, it takes you out of the story.

[link]

Pixar PRIDES itself on story. So much so, that they spend 2-3 years on just fleshing out the story, sometimes longer.

If you want pop out in your face 3D, go see a Dreamworks movie. However, don't expect a good story (or even entertaining one). Dreamworks uses gags like in your face 3D b/c it

Dreamworks uses gags like in your face 3D b/c it draws your attention away from their crappy, carbon-copy stories and entertains you. I could watch a Pixar movie in 2D, 3D on a big TV, on the big screen or on my iPod and still love it because the story is so good. I don't need 3D to enjoy it.

I find it hard to sit through 10 minutes of a Dreamworks film (dragons excluded).

So Paul, go enjoy your shitty dreamworks movies...

If you can't make it well, make it in 3D.

I consider RATATOUILLE to be on the bottom of Pixar's achievement list. The only way this news would have been more pathetic is if they said they were thinking about turning CARS into 3D

I won't go see it, but they're doing this to release them onto 3D Blu-Ray anyway. So they probably figure they might as well put them back in theaters as well.

MAKE UP YOUR MIND!

Seriously, so many of you 3-D bashers just jump on the bandwagon without even thinking about what youre saying! So are you complaining now that Pixar doesnt have its films exploit a gimmicky position on 3D with crap jumping out at you? I thought the big problem (other than the money grabbing with films that tack it on later) is that filmmakers are more concerned with using a cheap trick of forced immersion rather than making a film that respects the frame... People have to start making up their minds if whether they want a gimmicky 3D experience where stuff pops out at you, or a more subtle experience that creates depth and enhances the frame. you cant complain about wanting and not wanting both!

Crap Article

This is a bad article, not a bad idea. Main point of pixar succeeding with their films and now with 3D is that nothing they do is gimmicky. If you want eye popping in your face action, go to a strip club. Otherwise you sit back and sink into the world of multiple dimensions on a 2D plane. The fact that it's so subtle yet adds so many layers is what makes it a thing of beauty.

Anyone else notice this?

In the article the writer says "Contrast that with Dreamworks or Universal 3D, which is a lot more eye-popping as demonstrated in HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON or DESPICABLE ME." implying that he has seen both in 3d.

Then in the 'extra tidbit' section he wrote "I saw DESPICABLE ME in 2D".

I found that a little strange. How can you comment on how eye-popping the 3d is in a movie if you haven't actually seen it??
