Ratner escapes NY

Oct. 29, 2007by:
Although this article is Brett Ratner-based, Im not going to waste precious space bashing the guy, a) because its tired and lame, and b) because hes accomplished more than I most-likely ever will, and bangs the kinds of girls that I creep online.

After j receiving an award at the Savannah Film Festival, Ratner was asked about his involvement with the planned ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK remake, and he said it's indeed moving forward, just without him. In case you hadnt heard, Ratner was set to direct the remake which is to star 300 megaman Gerard Butler. This of course angered both Ratner haters and EFNY purists, but now, they can all breathe a collective sigh of relief, because this reviled hack wont be going near the beloved property. Thank God, right?

Another director whose name has been thrown around was Len Wiseman, but really, would he be any better? LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD was a pretty standard action flick, despite its good reviews. Any great director out there shouldnt be bothering himself with unnecessary remakes anyway. Theyd be too busy filming original content. If youre going to remake a film that isnt even that old, expect a generic director to be the one who brings in an equally generic idea for a movie to life.

Extra Tidbit: Again, no matter how much you hate Brett Ratner, you'd give up your fugitive brother just to be him. Admit it.

so what

Ratner got lucky, that's all it is. He's still a no-talent ass clown. Thank GOD he's off this, yeah he's better than Wiseman, probably because he gets bigger budgets but he still loves to take shits on franchises, including his own. He's also a major douche, and you don't have to be one of those to bang hot chicks which he probably doesn't anyway. Look at that picture.

So why no Ratner bashing?

I don't really get that. A hack is a hack. He's doing more then you are? Yeah, well he's clearly had much more oppurtunity then most of us have. That doesn't make him talented, it makes him lucky. Another rich white guy gets to make bad movies and not ever have to actually work for it because he simply is above criticism all of a sudden?

The only good film he ever made was a remake with a better cast. The Rush Hour movies are awful, he completely dumped on X-Men and Family Man was pretty bad

I'm not quite sure why exactly he gets a pass? People shit all over much more talented directors for simply taking career misteps while this guy has an entire career of shit and gets to walk? Come on guys.

Not a fan of remakes, but I still don't know why everyone gives Ratner so much shit. The guy has a great resume... The first two "Rush Hour" movies were legit action films (haven't seen the third), "Red Dragon" was a great entry into the Hannibal series, and "Family Man" was one of few good Christmas films. Action films require lots of skill and style from a director, and Ratner has it. Plus he's used Danny Elfman as a composer for two of his movies, so major props to that.

2 quick points

1. as long as people are downloading illegally and bootlegging you're going to continue to get REMAKES, COMIC BOOK MOVIES, VIDEO GAME MOVIES, SPORTS SPOOFS and concepts that have worked in the past. A built-in audience is needed to insure making the studio their money back. They don't run charities! And all our bitching can't be heard over the sound of cash registers.

2. as for the tidbit, if I woke up one day and learned that i was Brett Ratner I'd realize everyone hates me and my lack

Another pointless remake!!!

I don't care who directs this crap, because there is no way anyone will out-do the original. This is already past ridiculous on the remake front. Now they are going to remake "Blade?" That isn't even 10 years old, and a already a remake? WTF? Well I guess I should expect a remake on "300" next year won't I? Oh yeah and "Timecop" too! Wow I officially think that studios have given up on original ideas, which makes me profoundly sad...and pissed!

DIE HARD 4.0 was easily the best, if not one of the top two best, of the whole damn franchise. If it was supposed to be "average," than I want to see more "average" action movies out there - THIS was just plain awesome, in my opinion.

That said, I have faith in Len Wiseman, but...

...this would be a remake, and that already leaves a foul taste in my mouth.

Enough with these re-makes! I'm not even sure how the whole re-make thing started.

I suppose it's good that Ratner isn't doing it, but it would be much better if they just dropped this, get John Carpenter and Kurt Russell back together to make another "Escape" flick. I think one was planned a few years ago, "Escape from Earth" it was called, I believe.

You have to admit, a movie about an aging Snake Plissken would be much better than a re-make of the original.
