Really cool behind-the-scenes featurette for 'Coraline'

01.08.2010
100%

Normally I wouldn't waste your time on a behind the scenes featurette on a movie that has been out of theaters for about 10 months and on DVD for about four months but I'll make an exception for CORALINE. In a perfect world, UP would have a legitimate chance at the Best Picture Oscar leaving CORALINE a much better shot at the Best Animated Film. Sadly it doesn't look like it'll shake out that way but CORALINE really deserves all the accolades it gets.

And why? Just watch this video. Watch the giant draw of facial expressions they have just for Coraline alone. Watch that guy slowly move the eyeball about 1/16th of an inch so he can get 2 seconds of footage in one week. It's all such impressive and amazing work. It's nominated for a Golden Globe and hopefully will get itself an Oscar nomination as well.

Extra Tidbit: I wish Focus would have a limited theatrical re-release of CORALINE in 3D.

Genius

I loved the movie and when I saw the extras on blu-ray I had goosebumps. This was made by people who love their craft.

It doesn't matter who wins what, 2009 was a great year for animation (stop motion, CG, and cel animation we all solidly represented) and hopefully set the bar higher for films to come.

When I look back on the year in animation, Coraline and Fantastic Mr. Fox stand out in my memory far better than Up. Up was amazing, and the first act alone should win some kind of "making grown men cry" Oscar, but in all, Coraline and Mr. Fox were better. Coraline in 3D had me absolutely floored. Just beautiful.

I am probably in the minority on this but I think Coraline was far superior to Up. Up had a terrible act sandwiched between two great acts. Whereas Coraline was a near masterpiece from the first to the last frame.
