Reboot of the Day: National Lampoon's Vacation

02.11.2010

Just this past Sunday, Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo reprised perhaps their most famous roles, Clark and Ellen Griswold, in a 14-minute short for a travel site. Now today we have news that the Griswolds are about to get the reboot treatment for a new film from New Line.

The studio is looking to relaunch the VACATION franchise, though they'll drop the "National Lampoon" credit before the original's title. Before you get freaked out that someone is going to cast George Lopez as Clark Griswold, rest easy, Chevy Chase will return as Clark. The catch is that the film won't be focusing on him but instead will follow Rusty in more of a PLANES, TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES type scenario. Chase and D'Angelo will reprise their characters in supporting roles as happy grandparents waiting for Rusty and his family to arrive.

The studios has hired Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley to write a new script with WEDDING CRASHERS producer David Dobkin directing. This new film would give us the fifth actor to play Rusty Griswold after Anthony Michael Hall, Jason Lively, Johnny Galecki and Ethan Embry.

Extra Tidbit: I've stopped venting about how terrible these ideas are in my articles because I think at this point we all know how terrible these ideas are...

Instead of a new Rusty, each former actor should just randomly play different scenes with no explanation for the change. Think Parnassus without a magic mirror. You see Ethan Embry yelling at the kids and then all of the sudden, bam, AMH is driving.

Didn't Cedric "the Entertainer" (trust me, that definitely needs to be in quotes since he sucks) try to reboot this with an all black cast a few years back? And it failed miserably.

SEQUEL

Why are you calling this a reboot when its obviously a sequel??? Annoying. If someone else plays Clark and Ellen, and they are going to Wally World, THEN ITS A REBOOT. Geez.

Sounds more of a sequel than reboot. At LEAST Chevy is on board.

Rusty?!?!

Who gives a shit about Rusty! Is Hollywood that dense that they don't realize what made the first 3 films so successful?? It was GREAT WRITING by John Hughes and Chevy Chase. That's it! Nobody gives a shit about Rusty. This is gonna tank big-time. Bring back the GRISWOLDS as a family, guys...something like MIDDLE EASTERN VACATION or some shit... :)

When i first read the headline my heart stopped with images of tyler perry butchering this film. Then i read on and saw that they planned on beverly and chevy returning but than it sank again when i read they wanted to focus on Rusty. Please hollywood remake all the 3d spidermans and terminators you want but dont touch the Vacation movies!

Hollywood has become the mecca of celluloid unoriginality. Thank goodness there's Sundance Film Festival.

Yawn

This is getting ridiculous. John Hughes must be rolling in his grave right now.

I've always wanted to see a vacation movie with Rusty in the lead role... I would cast AMH as Rusty, but have the others show up in cameos...

Technically it's not a reboot.

It's just another sequel. I actually like the idea of progressing to Rusty, it kind of seems natural. Plus if they use that Holiday Road song, you can bet I will see this.

I was bitching about these reboots/remakes long before it became so blatantly obvious it was going to be the downfall of cinema. When Platinum Dunes started churning out every possible remake they could, you knew this was coming. Viva the deaths of all our favorite franchises! What's left to destroy? I suppose there is still time to remake Back to the Future. Oh no, I hope noone read that....

What's so terrible is...

The first Vacation was John Hughes tribute to his father and mostly based on his life. These reboots are completely fabricated out of bullshit. So many movies today are just combinations of things designed to be pleasing and therefor make money. I'm sure some young writer has a script about there crazy experiences during family vacation that would be a great original movie. But most likely some moneyman asshole would problem take that script, order a tacky rewrite, and make a cheap straight to
