Red State back on?

Oct. 10, 2009by: Tony Lang

Kev's secondary income.

If you haven't yet read Jenna Busch's interview with Kevin Smith, then what the HELL are you waiting for? Jenna's awesome! and Smith's not bad either...

Anyway, Kev spoke to Jenna about his dormant horror project RED STATE, which was left in limbo when the Weinsteins judged it too dark and bleak, meaning they don't see any money in it. He told her he'd eventually contemplate financing the damn thing himself if he had to.

Apparently though Smith won't have to spring his wallet for us to enjoy his vision of a scary flick, since things have been moving a bit during the course of the week. Out in England to promote his Smodcast book and field a few Evening With sessions, the big guy talked to Den of Geek -AFTER his chat with Jenna- saying “I got a call at 2am last night. I think we’ve got the money for Red State.

Nice to hear, but doubtful he'll get a jump on it right away, seeing how he's been going on about HIT SOMEBODY lately. Plus he might as well wait for COUPLE OF DICKS to be a hit (hopefully) so that money might come in even more. Or should he go spooky right away? What do y'all think?

Extra Tidbit: I DO love Kevin Smith, but maybe, JUST maybe, he should leave his wife out of his next few films. Ya know?

The problem with his wife is that he miscast her

She's not an ugly woman but he keeps casting her as the hot woman and because of that she suffers in comparison. In J&SBSB, she was in a leather-wearing group of thiefs with Shannon Elizabeth, Eliza Dushku and Ali Larter. In Clerks II, we were supposed to believe a choice between her and Rosario Dawson was a hard choice to make. Kevin, it's touching that you finds your wife hot but don't pit her against an actress who's 8 years younger...

While I generally agree with what you're saying, I have to retort - "hotness" is not usually a key factor in choosing between someone you are in a relationship with and about to marry and someone you got drunk one night and fucked. Just saying is all, as I've had to make similar choices.

Re: The Wifey

She's not distractingly bad, in my opinion. I like his style of making movies with his friends. She had a bit part in Zack and Miri that was harmless... as long as he doesn't cast her in like, the main role, I don't have a problem with it.

As for Red State possibly getting a greenlight; Awesome.

Regarding his wife, at least she can act and seems to fit in her roles, unlike Rob Zombie's wife.

Red State is #9.

He's said Hit Somebody isn't written, and he doesn't plan on doing it for a couple years. Before it went public he was calling it View Askew #10. So naturally Red State should be his next.

Ive been curious about Red State for quite some time now. Don't know if it will ever get made, but it better be freakin beautiful if it does, for all the trouble it seems it's been put through.

I'm still interested to see what he'd do with this, but not as much as I was. It's been in the pipeline for so long and he's talked about it so often that we pretty much know what's going to happen in it (including the ending, which he hasn't been that candid about).

At this point, does anyone really still care? It's going to have stale 90's jokes, and political 'satire' that would have 'hit the mark' back when it was announced in 2004.
