Redder? A sequel to Bruce Willis action movie Red is in the works

01.17.2011

The Bruce Willis action-comedy RED turned out to be a minor hit thanks to global box office figures -- enough to make Summit sufficiently satisfied to get a sequel going. The movie even got a perplexing nomination for a Golden Globe, which must count for something, right? Ahem.

According to Collider, the company has set original writers Jon and Erich Hoeber (who loosely adapted Warren Ellis' comic miniseries) to work on a way to bring back Willis' retired CIA agent, his new gal and his gang of elderly ex-spies.

This is merely the first step -- there's no guarantee a sequel would even go further than the script stage, but it's safe to assume that at least some of the cast from the first RED would show up to help or hinder Bruce. Or maybe he'd round up some other familiar and respectable aging actors for chuckles and gunplay.

The Hoebers also penned the script for Summit's upcoming Sam Worthington thriller MAN ON A LEDGE, and somehow figured out a way to make the decades-old board game BATTLESHIP into a $200 million summer action movie.

I'd be down for a sequel.

As for the extra tidbit, how about Michael Biehn, Val Kilmer, Kurt Russell, or Chuck Norris?

Actually really enjoyed the first so I'm all for a sequel. As for the tidbit, I know it's a long shot but Sean Connery.

Red was actually really good for the type of film it was. Seems like a logical movie to get a sequel, assuming they can keep the quality up.

And I have no problem with Red's Globe nom. Sure beats everything else in that category not named Kids Are All Right

Good news

I truly enjoyed Red with every fiber of my being but I wonder what Redder could be an acronym for.

Retired. and Extremely. Dangerous. Dickheads. Exacting. Revenge.!

Extra tb: Dan Akroyd, Micheal Keaton, Kurtwood Smith, and Susan Sarandon.

Why does the the sequel have to be any more violent than the first? The first one was a financial success and scored mostly positive reviews from audiences and critics. Are you promoting violence for the sake of violence? It's not like this is the die hard franchise, which had 3 R-rated films followed by a PG-13 film. I'd refer to an old phrase here, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Extra tidbit:

I would love to see Harrison Ford play a villian, and face off against Willis. I guess he could also be on Willis' team, but it would be cool to see Ford actually play a bad guy.

It'd great to see Clint Eastwood kick a little ass as the guy who taught Willis :) hell i'd buy a ticket right now.

Nice

Jack Nicholson would be awesome. Al Pacino would be even better. But of course the ultimate choice would be Clint Eastwood!

I haven't even seen the first one but I can tell it's going to be a blast. I wouldn't mind another adaption of this graphic series.

RED was indeed a blast. This movie may define the term popcorn film for me. Itís pure fun... pure DUMB fun but fun nonetheless. How can anyone not absolutely love the entire cast??? The more the better!

I'd like to see any of these guys in the link below! It's titled "Top 5 Actors who get MORE badass with Age". RED was fun, I'm down for a sequel.

I ENJOYED RED...

but I don't think it needs a sequel. It was like The Expendables with older actors, The Depends'ables. Thats Hollywood though, they just keep beating that dead horse into a puddle. The Whole Nine Yards wasn't enough, lets try for Ten, and while were at it lets make a sequel to SE7EN, we'll call it H8TE.

I loved the first one, so a sequel would be nice, as long as it's as fun as the first one. Would love to see Ford, Russell, or Biehn in it, though.

Red sucked

Red was straight up weaksauce. Totally pointless and lame. Bullshit PG-13 Action films need to stop.

HUGE disappoint. But Hollywood continues to do what they do best: milk anything that makes money.

Minor hit?

The movie cost 58 millions and went to 90 million only in the US. It made more cash in the US than overseas, where also works well with 75 million. The movie was much more profitable than various blockbusters of 2010, not a "minor hit". And it's a great movie and needs a sequel.

And it cost another $25-30 million in prints and promotion, so it barely broke even in the US and really made its profit overseas. For a Bruce Willis action movie, it's no DIE HARD success. It's a minor hit.

At first glance I thought I read Rad sequel instead of Red and got excited for another Cru Jones adventure.

See? Now this is the kind of movie that can get a sequel. The original was all about the characters and the action. The story didn't really matter. So for the 2nd one, all they have to do is make up some kind of story that makes sense, let the characters develop, make the action scenes fly, and boom! You have another "Red" movie that keeps up with the original.
