Redditor has his online post picked up by WB for film deal

10.14.2011

I'll bet with all the comments and writings you've left on the internet, you never thought that your ramblings would become a movie. And who would think that? It's insane. Yet it actually happened.

James Erwin, who has no screenwriting credits to his name, began posting about a month ago to a Reddit thread that began with the question, "Could I destroy the entire Roman Empire during the reign of Augustus if I traveled back in time with a modern U.S. Marine infantry battalion or MEU?"

His elaborate answer was discovered by a movie producer who brought it to Warner Bros. who picked up the pitch, titled ROME, SWEET ROME, and has a film project now set up with Gianni Nunnari (IMMORTALS) producing. This just happened.

As the thread title suggests, ROME, SWEET ROME follows a group of Marines flung back into ancient Rome and their attempts to stop an evil villain without changing the course of history.

So next time you're just leaving comments about how horrible Mike Sampson is and how much better JoBlo.com would be without him, remember that a movie producer could be reading and looking to turn your anti-Sampson rant into a movie. As long as they don't cast David Schwimmer as me, I'm cool with it!

Pretty damn cool. Can't believe so many people here are bitching about this, I guess it must be jealousy because it hasn't happened to them.

So, it's like The Final Countdown, all over again, but with Ancient Rome instead of Pearl Harbor...

How original

Sounds like that 2009 video game Darkest of Days, and I'm sure it's been done before that.

Not surprised. Perhaps, by looking at people's comments, they will find an original film in there somewhere. Hopefully the dude gets credit and/or some cash outta the deal.

I think Paul Schneider would make a better fit for you, Mike.

I can't wait to root for the valiant soldiers, armed with nothing more than the latest weaponry and training money can buy, pitted against the overwhelming might of, er, some sandal-wearing sword-twirlers and their ancient battle tactics.
Dunno about anyone else, but I love cheering on the heroic underdog who's armed to the teeth with vastly superior fire-power to the enemy.

Well it could be interesting if the Romans WIN the battle in the end, and only one, or few of the marines come back to the "present" only to discover that what they left behind (weapons, marines taken prisoner...)has radically changed History... Just a thought...

Wow, I love how consistent and fair the Hollywood system is. Meanwhile thousands of aspiring screenwriters bend over backwards and toil for years in a fruitless effort to get agents and producers to pay attention to their meticulously crafted work.

Yeah that's it. All those guys suck. It's not like there's a million barriers from even letting you legally submit your work unsolicited. Or that the readers that end up deciding whether to give it a pass or not project their own inadequacies and personal biases onto your work. For the record, I'm an aspiring screenwriter. And not to sound like some sour grapes motherfucker, but the idea that some jackass with a Deadliest Warrior derivative internet post gets an automatic golden ticket pisses

I hear they're turning more comments in to movies. Expect the movie "first" to come out in 2012.
