Report says The Mummy could lose as much as $95 million

06.20.2017

The beginning of Universal’s Dark Universe arrived almost two weeks ago with THE MUMMY, and what should’ve been a grand entrance was more a defeated limp through the doorway. Receiving a critical beat down from critics and audiences the movie opened well below expectations in the U.S. – despite a big opening globally. But those global dollars probably won’t save the troubled pic, and one estimate has already come out as to how much the studio could lose. Long story short, they better find an ancient tomb full of jewels to rob, and quick.

Deadline has gathered from several financial sources that the Tom Cruise-led action movie could lose as much as $95 million after all is said and done, with their estimated final global tally hitting somewhere around $375 million. Though that’s no chump change to us normal folk, the movies estimated budget falls around the $350 million range, with a combined $190 million production budget and a $150 million global promotion cost.

The movie has been severely hurt by bad buzz, which hasn’t always spelled doom for movies, such as the TRANSFORMERS films or last year’s BATMAN V. SUPERMAN. But in a summer crowded with so many tentpole films (including the beloved WONDER WOMAN) audiences are flaking on the franchise starter, with competition growing each week. Normally movies like this hope to gain from overseas box office numbers, and the movie's current global haul is $293 million, but this week alone sees the release of TRANSFORMERS: THE LAST KNIGHT, a franchise with tremendous global appeal. No doubt its release will harshly cut into MUMMY’s numbers, as will next week’s DESPICABLE ME 3, another franchise entry that’s sure to take advantage of deep overseas roots. From there it gets worse with SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING kicking off July.

Total revenue to be gained by Universal (as they only get a small cut from overseas box office revenue) between “theatrical rental, net global TV and home entertainment” is expected to be around $250 million, hence the $95 million loss from its $345 million cost.

The game “Who’s to Blame?” is being played in a lot of circles, with a lot of the weight being placed on Cruise, who is being said to have had a heavy hand in the movies development and marketing. But blaming one person is ludicrous (if the level of his involvement is even true), and the problem is quite simple: THE MUMMY sucks. It is a bad film, and in this age of $15 movie tickets audiences don’t want to turn out to see a movie with such a negative consensus. Had MUMMY even been just mediocre it would’ve fared better as leisure entertainment. But it’s not mediocre; it sucks, and I say that as “a fan”, who studio execs and directors like to say the movie is “really for.” However, that doesn't mean the next one can't be good, or the other Dark Universe films. This is great time for learning what needs to be done going forward. Spend less, and focus on quality instead of franchise tie-ins and bloated CGI. In these situations everyone tries to run around and blame one person, or marketing or critics, when really the problem was staring them in the face from the start. It’s called a script.

THE MUMMY is in theaters now.

Doesn't matter what somebody says or writes about a movie, if it's my genre and looks interesting, I'm gonna turn out and support it. As I did with this. I honestly didn't expect more than another Fraser action attempt at horror, which it pretty much delivers on. With one exception, Sofia Boutella. My god, did she deliver! She is such a stunning actresses, and what a great character for her to play. I'm excited to see where this universe goes.

Say what you will about Cruise but he did bring his A game in that movie. But the script was horrendous, full of cliches, and severely lacking a strong female protagonist to balance out Cruise's dominant presence.

Good. They should've made these movies in this "universe" if they must have a universe, on a very small budget, with a very horror, Gothic feel. Serves them right. Maybe they'll reboot the series for a fourth time in a decade.

125 million is what the studio claims the budget to be. Studios frequently low-ball budget numbers, especially when their movie is a steaming pile of garbage. People have been reporting that the production costs on this grew out of control for a couple months now. 190 million is the current industry consensus. Box Office Mojo is correct that 125 is the listed production budget and this article is correct that it probably cost more like 190. Either way, the studio is going to lose a ton of

I def. agree that the budget should've been smaller and that the studio should focus on the quality of the film. A film starts with a script and lets face it, It was a bad script from the get go. There was too much going on. They forced the "Dark Universe" when the film should have just been a Mummy film and not a Tom Cruise film. If they wanted to set up the Dark Universe the studio should've started with a small film to introduce us to the whole Prodigium thing. They could've started with a

They could've started with a Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde film and then went from there. Just my 2 cents.

I think the Prodigium was the lamest concept they could ever think of here. They practically just ripped off Hellboy's BPRD. It would have been a more interesting concept if The Prodigium is set as recurring antagonists instead.

Anyone that is interested in seeing a movie but wont because critics disliked it is a moron. My issues is that it doesn't look interesting or fun to me. You're right though. People whom have an interest and choose not to go could end up liking it. We do live in a world where people are told what a good movie is or how bad a movie is and you are not allowed a different opinion. I am super excited to see TF5 tonight. Are they good movies? NO, but I enjoy enough parts that to me they are

NO, but I enjoy enough parts that to me they are enjoyable and no amount of negative reviews is gonna sway me from seeing the new movie. Unfortunately it goes both ways and nothing is gonna sway me to see The Mummy. People should see what they want and stop caring about what others think of it. I hate reality tv, so I wont support it nor watch any of it, but that doesn't mean I would fight to take it away from people that do like it.

I enjoyed the film for what it was, but I can see why others wouldn't. It did have a lot of problems, though Cruise's anti-hero performance wasn't one of them.

It felt like a "2nd Phase" film, as though we missed several movies before this, at least a Jeckyll/Hyde origin movie. The script was needlessly convoluted; there was no reason to shoehorn the Templars into the mythology of The Mummy. There was no mood; the original Universal Monster movies ooze with spooky gothic mood. The

I don't understand if the cost was 350 and the expected total is 375... Then how are they losing 95 million?! It was the first truly bad movie I have seen this year. Jake Johnson's character was terrible, story was all over the place, story was dumb, and action sequences felt way too forced like they were written before the script. Crowe was good but had nothing to do, Cruise was just ok. To be honest I had a lot more fun with Dracula Untold.

I think the 95 million come from global promotion & advertising (which often times isn't added into the final budget since it's not necessarily a solid number leading to release).

I don't understand why the media is trying to make it look like a big failure. It's budget is $350 million? That's so funny & ridiculous. It's just a $125 million movie and it's going to get profits by the end of it's full run ( $400 - $450). It wouldn't have collected even this much if Tom wasn't in this

You didn't read the whole article, did you?

"Total revenue to be gained by Universal (as they only get a small cut from overseas box office revenue) between “theatrical rental, net global TV and home entertainment” is expected to be around $250 million, hence the $95 million loss from its $345 million cost."

The studio doesn't get all the money from overseas. Just a fraction of it.

I feel the same way. Dracula: Untold was actually not that bad. I liked the angle they went with and was supposed to be the start of Dark Universe, but now with The Mummy flopping, who knows. All I know is I have zero interest in seeing The Mummy. It just...it kinda looks boring.

The script was a mess, and this movie which was supposed to open up the "Dark Universe" franchise, is partially Tom C's fault. I'm going to get a lot of down votes for this but hear me out please!
His ego got in the way, and he assumed (incorrectly) that his methods were superior than the people who wrote and directed the movie. I think that directors and movie executives need to, at the very least, re-think his roll in a movie, and leave the moviemaking to the professionals. He should

I think that directors and movie executives need to, at the very least, re-think his roll in a movie, and leave the moviemaking to the professionals. He should stick to acting, and action scenes. He's not a one-man show in terms of: acting, producing, directing, etc. Tom is a big draw in China, but that can only carry a bankroll so far.
I also believe that Alex Kurtzman is partially at fault, for: (a) letting Tom take the wheel and not telling Tom to stay put, and (b)tent poling a major movie franchise.
I'm a big fan of the old horror movies with Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolfman, etc, but this is not a good start.

Oh..a bit of a side note: I'm not at all against actors giving their advice, or improvising a scene or maybe offering input on editing, but from what the Hollywood Reporter and Variety reported, as to Cruise almost taking over the entire process of The Mummy, this was a mistake.

I get where you're coming from but you're making a lot of assumptions about Cruise (unless you were there for pre-production).

@Blamebers. You're right, and I could be assuming a lot, but the stories in the trades about Tom's level of involvement lead me to assume the worst.
