Rev up the remake machine: Lethal Weapon, The Wild Bunch, Westworld

Jan. 19, 2011by: Dave Davis

"You through?"

"I haven't even started yet."

And neither has the remake train. Might as well embrace the fact that some of your favorite movies will invariably get repackaged with a new hook, a new setting and/or new faces.

According to Heat Vision, an exec shakeup at Warner Bros. means that a burst of updated classics could hit the reboot tracks, with LETHAL WEAPON right in front. Deadline says that TALES FROM THE GANGSTER SQUAD writer Will Beall is already hired for the new script, with Joel Silver re-producing.

The 1987 action flick that gave us Mel Gibson's unforgettable cop-on-the-edge and arguably became the modern template for the "buddy cop" genre (though 48 HRS makes a strong case) has plenty of company in the pipeline. Other projects that had long been kicking around as potential remakes but could get a fresh chance are the robots-gone-haywire movie WESTWORLD and Sam Peckinpah's masterpiece Western THE WILD BUNCH.

Both have been slowly shuffling along during the past decade -- WESTWORLD once in the works with producer Joel Silver and star Arnold Schwarzenegger, while a few years ago David Ayer (HARSH TIMES) was working on a contemporary WILD BUNCH. Plans for a LETHAL WEAPON 5 (from Shane Black!) never came together, and obviously never will.

Others to possibly get kickstarted include THE DIRTY DOZEN (once a Guy Ritchie project), OH GOD and TARZAN.

Extra Tidbit: So... Taylor Lautner and Donald Glover in the new LETHAL WEAPON, then? Probably.

Kevin Smith already tried to remake Lethal Weapon. it was called Cop-Out and the whole movie felt like a boring watered down Lethal Weapon. Complete with "funny guy" sidekick in the form an entirely underused and over promoted Sean William Scott.

Lethal Weapon can never be rebooted with the same edge. Gibson's later antics actually make it more fun to watch. The Wild Bunch...one of the greatest films ever made...if they modernize it I might let it slide (how many times have they remade Yojombo or Rio Bravo with different settings?) Westworld wasn't perfect to begin with, but in my opinion it was Yul Brynner's most bad-ass hour. Seriously, wouldn't Arnold have been a little too spot-on, what with Terminator's debt to that movie?

The Dirty Dozen, people STILL think we ought to send death-row inmates into war, so it could work, just steer clear of WWII. And didn't they already make an Oh, God remake? And who could possibly replace George Burns (or Morgan Freeman in the Almighty movies). Who is God this time?

ya know it juts burns me up when ppl cry about remakes ( reboots) ppl say "waah waah" I like it the way it is.. fact of the matter is, who the fuck cares if they remake these movies.. very few are better than the original's.. but still that doesnt mean that the movie is going to suck... all those horror films were decent enough! its a good time at the movies. if the movie looks appealing to you then go see it. if it doesnt then dont fucking go! and dont talk shit about something you havent

Not my favorites!

I think it is funny that we can agree that some need to be remade, but hate it when they attempt to touch our favorites.

I think we need to pass a law that forbids Hollywood from remaking a great movie until the actors are dead. Let's write our Congressmen, and get them on this as soon as they finish the steroids in baseball investigation. Power to the people!

Don't touch Lethal Weapon until after I am dead!.

Lethal Weapon has been remade over a billion times through direct to video markets and big budget reworkings. Look around on the net and you'll find a Lethal Weapon clone.

I'm not happy about any of these remakes, but... it's going to happen. Nothing we can do but stick to the originals and keep their memories alive.

A remake of Lethal Weapon really wouldn't be a Lethal Weapon movie. I understand that Hollywood sees more potential for success in a pre-established brand or franchise but some movies just can't be remade. Lethal Weapon is one of those. Gibson and Glover ARE the film. Wouldn't it be easier just to hire Shane Black to write a completely original buddy cop movie and cast two young and popular actors to play the leads?

Yes, I know this post is green. Bear with me.

I don't have any interest in any Lethal Weapon or Wild Bunch remakes, no. But Westworld? Westworld is a terrible film with a great hook. Crichton effectively remade it himself with Jurassic Park (replacing robots with dinosaurs - now they need a pirates & ninjas version, and the trilogy will be complete), so why not give it a new go? I'm looking forward to it.

How funny it would be if they got Christian Bale and Andrew Garfield, based solely on their similarities to Brolin & Benjamin from

Seriously? I dunno how old Danny Glover is, but Mel Gibson's definitely's got another Lethal Weapon film within him. But then again his comment about Oksanna getting raped "by a pack of n-words" might have killed any chances of a reunion.

With Westworld and The Wild Bunch I'm more on the fence. The first one has great potential with modern FX, it's a dated movie. And The Wild Bunch is a classic but western remakes haven't been terrible lately, with "3:10 to Yuma" and "True Grit".

The only problem with The Wild Bunch remake is that the original relied on an all-star cast of established actors and stars in their own right. The make-up of what constitutes a star has changed drastically since then and so a modern Wild Bunch cast would look like a gimmick. It'd be just another cluster-fuck like the Expendables.

I'm usually defending remakes because you can't judge something till you've seen it and sometimes you get surprised. But this seriously is the worse remake idea. The cast, the director and the script is what made "Lethal Weapon" superior to the 101 other buddy cop movies. A new movie with a different cast and crew would just become buddy cop movie number 102.

Absolute Bullshit!

A Lethal Weapon remake is just a disaster waiting to happen! There is absolutely no one who can fill those two shoes. I'm just waiting for the Independence Day remake where Chris Brown plays Will Smith's character smh.

THEY ALREADY REMADE LETHAL WEAPON...

It was called Rush Hour, and it sucked. Seriouly though, why not just make a buddy cop movie like Lethal Weapon, but with a differant title. The remake will end up nothing like the original, so why call it Lethal Weapon, the only reason is Lethal Weapon is brand recognized name. So they'll throw a few "aren't we being clever" quips in there referancing something from the old movies, and make something thats not even remotely like Lethal Weapon at all. Remember when Hollywood actually made some

Yep, and here it comes... once you screw with a classic like True Grit, the doors swing wide open. GOD, I hate remakes. Just stay home and watch THE DIRTY DOZEN or LETHAL WEAPON already done right!

Remake Lethal Weapon? What a shitty idea! Those movies are classics.

I mean who are you going to cast in replace of Gibson and Glover in signature roles?
