Review: Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance

Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance
Feb. 18, 2012by:

PLOT: Johnny Blaze is summoned to get all fire and brimstone in order to save a young boy from becoming the devils latest host. While on the journey, the Ghost Rider soon finds that the devil can create an equally dangerous bad guy, one in particular that can turn fresh fruit rotten with only his touch. Go Ghost Rider, Go!

REVIEW: To say GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE is slightly better than the first flaming skeleton head flick isnt quite the compliment it should be. Youd expect one hell of a thrill ride from Neveldine/Taylor, not a struggle to keep awake. Yet this beast of a flick aside from a couple of semi-exciting set pieces is a predictable and generic bore. Sure youve got Nicolas Cage doing his thing the same thing he has been doing for awhile now yet sadly he is only mildly more interesting than he was the first time around. The only saving grace is the addition of Idris Elba, he manages to spark a little fire in this ho hum affair.

The best news is that if you havent suffered through the original, you dont need to bother to get caught up here. We are introduced to Johnny Blaze (Cage) and the pact he made with the devil. Of course he is looking for a way to stop the demon that is inside him, alas nothing works. That is until he is visited by Moreau (Elba) who convinces him to save a young boy (Fergus Riordan) before Roarke (Ciarn Hinds) - the devil in disguise - can get his hands on him. Apparently he plans some sort of ceremony to take over the boys body and soul or something like that. Whatever the intention, the result is a half-ass story with a dumb script. Oh yeah, there is something about a group of monks who will turn Johnny Blaze back into JUST Johnny Blaze if he saves the boy again, whatever!

As far as the 3D goes, youve seen it before. This post-conversion job felt lazy and brought nothing new to Mr. Flame Heads latest adventure. The effects were all over the place, yet the Ghost Rider himself looked better than he did the first time out. Some of the most interesting shots included a few animated sequences that added a little flair to the proceedings. It was especially cool to see Blaze sign his bloody deal with the devil in a fresh way. You have to wonder if the entire film wouldve benefitted from being completely animated.

As far as the look of the film, Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor gave this sequel their own style. Sometimes it worked. The final confrontation picked things up a bit, and a couple of other moments added a little life to this generic story. Aside from the nice blend of animation, the new bad guy also had some promise with another scene chewing thespian named Johnny Whitworth who plays Ray Carrigan. Both Ghosty and Whitworths rot inducing Paleface looked pretty cool as far as make-up design and special effects are concerned. The two even have a fun fight here and there. Yet when they werent fighting and they were moving the story forward by speaking, it was a borderline painful experience.

From some of the early footage, this looked to be a fun time at the movies type of flick. I get the fact that much of it is done with tongue firmly planted in cheek, but the problem is that this just isnt any fun. Aside from a couple of decent action sequences, the bland plot and the lame attempt at storytelling have nothing to offer. Neveldine and Taylor can shoot a stylistically pleasing flick, hopefully next time it will be one worth watching.

Sounds like a totally wasted opportunity, given that Neveldine and Taylor were involved. Wasn't this movie supposed to be R-rated back in last summer?

Dude, in no way am I responsible for his answer... To clarify, I didn't miss a sex scene. I didn't miss anything because I haven't seen it yet. This is the director's opinion, not mine. You should be asking him that, not me.

Miguel, you link to an answer about a sex scene. Is that what you missed, some steamy hot flaming skeleton sex?
A rating doesn't make a movie good or bad. People are still complaining about Punisher Warzone even though it's rated R. How's that possible if according to the people on this site an R rating equals a good movie.

I don't get all the R rated hype that's going on on Joblo lately. A different rating wouldn't have made this movie any better.

Studio interference?

Sounds like the studio wanted to sell the film to the kids instead of being true to the character which is what we were promised by the directors. I cant think of any other reason, one need only watch the Crank films to see what could have been done here if left completely alone by the studio. If only Marvel had control of all their chracters... I want a faithful Man-Thing film, where the Man-Thing actually looks like ummm... THE MAN-THING. When I was a kid three of my favorite characters were

When I was a kid three of my favorite characters were Man-Thing, Ghost Rider and Werewolf by Night. I loved Marvel's horror comics from the 70's. I beg of Disney to rein in all of Marvel's properties under one banner so we can finally see these characters as they are meant to be.

3/10 is better than I expected!

Ghost Rider is an awesome character & has all the right ingredients for a great flick. Ghost Rider should be shot like Blade & without Nic Cage!!! That man just f*%k*n% s*%t at everything movie related. Massive comic book fan: YES. Massive ability to portray a comic book character: NO

I am so stunned as to why no one can make a good ghost rider movie? Even the crappy first movie was better than this! The elements are there, GR looks wicked, he is a fairly popular character, but it seems that GR and Punisher (2 of my personal faves) keep getting shafted. Look at Blade 1 and 2, and Hellboy 1 and 2 dark characters done right with a serious attitude. GRSOV was a let down. I just dont get it. GR has to be a serious movie, border lining on horror, with some really evil bastard

Neveldine and Taylor are not to blame.

They are very talented great directors who use some crazy stuff to film their movies. But the script was just terrible. It was so cheesy. IDK the action was decent. Huge let down.

Aww, that's so adorable. You're family and friends can't stand how much of an asshole you are so you have to seek attention on the internet, that's cute. :) I'll guess you're under the age of 17 and think you're a REAL film nerd :). How cute.

The movie looks over the top and fun. Not necessarily the way a Ghost Rider movie should be and look, but until they reboot this and make a more serious version, I'll take what I can get.

Ghost Rider should be rated r and done in the same vein as Blade and Punisher. Just dark and gritty.

Yea I wanted to have hope that this would be good, but I didn't really. The trailers just really didn't do it for me.

Honestly, it was better than the first one, but not by much. And really, what was so hard to figure out about the plot? Devil sires half-human child so he can possess it and have his full powers while walking the Earth. See? One sentence explanation. Amazing, ain't it?
Then again, I walked into this one expecting a crazy, cheesy, hyper-kinetic camerawork, ham-fisted movie...and that's what it was. They explained Zatharos (the demon possessing Johnny) in a way that didn't need to be drawn out

Then again, I walked into this one expecting a crazy, cheesy, hyper-kinetic camerawork, ham-fisted movie...and that's what it was. They explained Zatharos (the demon possessing Johnny) in a way that didn't need to be drawn out into its own storyline, like some other directors might have taken it. They introduced The Order, which any Johnny Blaze/Ghost Rider fan would know. And the kid was supposed to be the studio's lame attempt at bringing Danny Ketch (the shitty, inferior GR) into the picture, when he really should have been Damion Hellstrom (Son of Satan, again, for any true fans of the Johnny Blaze GR).
So yeah, I get it that if you're not knowledgable about any of GR's history in the comics, you'd be lost as to who was who in the movie. For that, you can blame David Goyer (who wrote both GR movies). I got a lot out of it since I've been a GR since the 70's (yes, even up to the current crappy incarnation of the female GR). If you go into it looking for just a whacky movie with some decent action scenes and WAY better F/X than the first movie, then you'll have fun. If you go into it expecting Shakespeare or 80's R-rated action, you're going to be sorely disappointed. Also, if you're a serious GR fan, I'd say check out a bargain matinee, otherwise, wait til dvd.

I never claimed it was comlicated or confusing, just dumb and dull. You are correct it was simple, I just didn't care at all which is why I use the term whatever. However I am glad you enjoyed it more than I did, to each his own man.

From reading the review, a 3 seems a little low. At least to me from what was said, it seems like there was more enjoyment had for at least a 5...

Damn even after two movies Hollywood still can't get Ghost Rider right? You would think Cage would have the power to do have a say in it? Oh well I'll wait to Redbox.

I've lost all hope for Nicolas Cage. He never will make another good movie, will he? To quote James Franco in "The Green Hornet": "Boom! It's over. See your way out."

I think you're way off

I saw this movie last night with friends and everyone liked it. All of us thought it was better then Thor. I'd give it a 7, this review has hatter written all over it.

It was way better than the first, but nowhere near being a great movie. It's decent at best, with some cool visuals and decent action. It's an okay film to watch for fun when your brain needs a break. Nic Cage is a goofy bastard as usual, and the Rider's lack of backstory makes things very confusing and awkward. All in all, watchable film when you have time to spare. 3D sucked balls though.
