Review: Last Vegas

Nov. 1, 2013by: Chris Bumbray

PLOT: Four old friends (Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman & Kevin Kline) reunite for a weekend in Las Vegas when one of them (Douglas) decides to marry his much-younger girlfriend.

REVIEW: The pitch for LAST VEGAS must have been something along the lines of THE HANGOVER for old guys although by looking at the combined CVs the four stars, they may just as well have said THE HANGOVER for Oscar winners. As the movie that finally unites these four- all of them legends- LAST VEGAS cant help but be disappointing. Its such a run-of-the-mill romp, that you cant help but think that these guys clearly had more fun making it than any of us will have watching it.

Probably the only really nice thing that can be said about LAST VEGAS is that director Jon Turteltaub, despite his family-friendly filmography (PHENOMENON, THE KID, the NATIONAL TREASURE series) makes this a tad raunchier than youd expect (but still only PG-13) and doesnt dial up the schmaltz too much, preventing this from becoming, God forbid, another BUCKET LIST. It tries to maintain a fairly light tone throughout, although this is one of those comedies that- for a tolerant audience- might be called pleasant rather than funny.

For the more cynical viewers (such as myself) LAST VEGAS is pretty ho-hum, if never downright painful to watch. It certainly feels like a bit of a waste of all the talent involved, and is not unlike the time Michaels father Kirk Douglas, teamed with Burt Lancaster in the eighties comedy TOUGH GUYS. For four legends, youd wish they had something a little more profound to chew on.

The first half hour of LAST VEGAS is actually not bad. Douglas and De Niro both play to type, with Douglas being the womanizing slickster, while De Niro is the down-to-earth tough guy with a grudge, as Douglas blew of his beloved wifes funeral years earlier. Its fun watching these two legends nag and try to one-up each other as they vie for the affections of a sultry Vegas chanteuse (played by a likable and attractive Mary Steenburgen). Kline- whos been away from comedy too long- and Freeman are even better as the two henpecked guys (Kline by his wife, Freeman by his over-protective son) who just want to cut loose and party. Freeman, whos always so serious, seems to be having the time of his life playing drunk, while Kline reminds us all of what a pro he is as he chases bikini clad girls (with his wife having given him a Viagra and a condom telling him what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.

Whatever momentum Turteltaub has going for him up to this point wears off around the time the four guys find themselves judging a bathing suit competition, which proves to be wildly unfunny, especially when half of LMFAO starts dry-humping De Niros face while wearing a tiny speedo. The rest of the shenanigans are pretty tepid, with Turteltaub always backing-off anytime the film threatens to really get raunchy, and as a result it all feels like a bad eighties comedy, complete with several musical montages. By the time 50 Cent shows up in a cameo, youll be eagerly waiting for the credits to roll.

As much as LAST VEGAS bored me, I should admit that the audience of mostly 60+ folks I saw this with were in absolute hysterics throughout. The movie ends with the possibility (threat?) of a sequel, and its very possible that this may happen. If it does, hopefully Turteltaub will find a way to make the most of his talented cast, as this just feels so minor. Its not a terrible film by any stretch, but its just not very good either.

Wow

I sure am glad I took this review with a grain of salt 'cause this was the most fun I've had watching a flick in a long time!! I had a smile on my face the whole way through. Very feel good and funny flick. The boys have a great chemistry with one another too. Excellen flick. I'd give it a 7.5 out of 10.

Did this really need a review? Even from the horrendous trailers, it's obvious this is a piece of shit intended to get some geriatrics to pluck down their whatever the hell the senior citizen discount is nowadays. Four great actors don't make a movie worth seeing. To see how big of a difference a script and director make see the on screen teaming of De Niro and Pacino. First came Godfather Part II (although they weren't in the same scenes), then Heat and finally Righteous Kill. Two are great

I'd probably give this a 6. It was a lot better than I thought it would be. It's unremarkable, sure, but the acting from the four involved is great and their chemistry is fantastic. I had fun watching them together. The film came off as little more than watching these four excellent actors get together for a weekend in Vegas. I probably wouldn't see this twice, or even run out to pay money for it, but the screening I saw it at was enjoyable. Certainly a better film than I was willing to give it

I'm really gettign tired of these "old actors last hoora" type movie. i know they are getting old and their available rolls are dwindling but this is not the answer. I think the worst thing to come out of these is that Morgan Freeman, an wonderful actor, is starting to become the token "old black guy" in these flicks, which is horrible.

Should've distributed the making of the movie in theaters rather than the film itself.

The studio should've scrapped the film and released a theatrical documentary "Jackass style" feature of these actors making the movie.
Guaranteed to be funny, just watching this actors fucking up and fucking around with each other. Come on Hollywood!!!!!!

Great! Another poorly made comedy banking on it's casting of classic actors

This movie never looked promising. It's the Bucket List meets The Hangover only with more top listed actors making one of their biggest embarrassments on the silver screen. I hate it when studios put together a lame comedy and sell it off purely on it's great casting. Seriously, even USA Today had a huge article talking not about how lame the movie is, but how great the actors are based on their past credits and the fact that these are all Oscar winners. And what bothers me more, is that middle

Did we really need a review to tell us this movie sucks? Just watch the trailer.

De Niro needs a bad movie intervention

he was fantastic in Being Flynn, which was a really great and underrated movie. Should've won an award or two for that one, yet he gets nominated for his work in Silver Linings instead? Usual b.s. award politics... Do check it out.

I have watched it and agree with you its a great flick. I just get annoyed when I see him choose the odd film like this.

The only reason I want to see this is because of the cast. The cast is too great and iconic for me not to see this.
