Review: Pacific Rim

Pacific Rim
Jul. 10, 2013by:

PLOT: Legions of alien creatures from another dimension known as Kaiju invade our world, destroying many of our major cities. Only man-made robots called Jaegers have the power to combat them.

REVIEW: You can't accuse Guillermo del Toro of not wearing his 14-year-old self on his sleeve. The filmmaker, perhaps more than any other working today, represents the fanboy-who-made-it; a big-time director in his 40s who still acts and dreams like the little kid who played with Star Wars toys all day, watched scary movies all night and went to the movie theater whenever he got a chance. The man makes the movies he wants to make, without an ounce of cynicism or greed infused in the work; that little kid wonder always present, even in the darker stuff like PAN'S LABYRINTH.

And PACIFIC RIM is the ultimate projection of a little kid's brain on a movie screen. It's a movie about giant robots fighting giant monsters (well, inter-dimensional aliens, actually, but whatever) and it features such prolonged, breathless bouts of carnage that it's like del Toro is standing there above it all, crashing his toys together in the backyard and ignoring his parents' demands that he grow up. It's a testament to del Toro's spirit that he was able to take $200 million of someone else's money in order to realize the ultimate nerd daydream, which basically is "holy shit wouldn't it be cool if aliens were fighting giant robots for like one hour straight?!?!"

But not unlike an eager adolescent, del Toro is primarily concerned with the superficial holy shit-ness of the idea (dreamt up by co-writer Travis Beacham). PACIFIC RIM offers enjoyable spectacle when it's going crazy knocking its toys together, but there's such a glaring lack of depth or intrigue to the rest of it that I can't help but be frustrated. Look, I'm not naive; I know PACIFIC RIM is all about the money shots, and if I want three-dimensional characters and a thoughtful story I can go see a Almodovar film; but did the human drama have to be so severely lazy? Some will say, "Well, it's made for kids!", but I've always been a firm believer in the idea that just because it's made for the young - and the young-at-heart - doesn't mean it can't also contain complexity. (Isn't that the charge we always level at the STAR WARS prequels whenever Lucas tells us they were meant for children?)

The story is well-known to most likely everyone right now. At some point, for some reason, a fissure appeared at the bottom of the ocean and monsters from another dimension came through to wreak havoc. And they keep coming, devastating several cities for years until all of humanity's resources are pooled into a defense system known as Jaegars, walking, fighting robots who engage the Kaiju in battle. The Jaegers are nifty, but also quite complicated, and they need two pilots to work in tandem to control them; this is accomplished by something called "The Drift", which melds the minds of the pilots and basically enables them to know each others thoughts and memories. (It's one of the movie's best and most original ideas.) The attacks are clearly getting worse, and with the Jaegers taking some harsh beatings recently, the government is threatening to shut down the program and move toward building giant walls meant to block out the raving creatures.

The film's first act is more or less a necessary preamble to the good stuff. Weirdly, del Toro zooms through the set-up in the first few minutes; he doesn't want to waste time on the initial Kaiju attacks or exposition, he wants to get right to the part where we already have giant robots in place. It definitely feels rushed, but the impulse is understandable. Our main character is Raleigh Beckett (Charlie Hunnam), once a Jaeger pilot, now a construction worker despondent over the death of his brother. Of course, Raleigh will need to get back into action with the Jaeger program's imminent closure, and he's brought out of retirement by his former commander, the stern Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba).

Raleigh is paired with a woman named Mako (Rinko Kikuchi). Shy but superbly intelligent, Mako has long wanted to be a pilot but has been held back by Stacker, a father-figure, because of his fear that her emotions will get the best of her in the heat of battle. (You basically have to shut out your memories while you're piloting a Jaeger; tough for her to do when her mind is enveloped by thoughts of her city being leveled by Kaiju when she was a young girl.) Raleigh and Mako form a platonic bond that makes them an ideal fit, but they'll have to prove to themselves and to Stacker that they can actually handle being sent into the field.

There are archetypes, and then there are cardboard cut-outs, and del Toro and Beacham deliver the latter. Every character's motivation, backstory and goal has been etched in stone for as long as we can remember, and no one deviates from the script. Raleigh carries the memory of his brother around like a sack and has to overcome his doubts about himself. Mako too is saddled with her own bad memories, as well as a severe need to convince her father figure, Stacker, that she's a worthy pilot. Stacker, for his part, is rough and gruff, but of course has a soft heart for the misfits who want to impress him. Surprising, that these rather commonplace characters have been developed by del Toro, who is usually adept at infusing genuine humanity into his protagonists.

That said, Elba and Kikuchi are extremely charismatic and well-cast, with faces the camera loves (Kikuchi in particular is completely lovable). Hunnam, however, is a complete cipher, neither exuding the charm nor the depth that would have made his character something more than a dull handsome hero. In fact, Hunnam is so detrimental to the film that all energy seems to ooze out of the picture when he's engaged in a dramatic scene. It's not that he's a bad actor; he's just lacking in the fundamental magnetism that a leading man requires. (To be fair, it's not his fault that he's saddled with dialogue like this: "I spent so much time thinking about the past, I forgot about the future. Until now.")

Del Toro's supporting characters mostly function as groan-worthy comic relief. Charlie Day and Burn Gorman flail about wildly as scientists who are trying to predict the Kaiju's next moves, but their presence is mostly a nuisance; a bickering-couple routine that is frankly tiresome. Del Toro often has no trouble conjuring up entertaining, light-hearted moments in his films; the HELLBOY movies contain plenty of amusing bits and sight gags that appeal to all ages. But here the attempt to inject schtick-y comedy into the proceedings is unwelcome. (To be fair, the two actors completely fulfill their obligations to the roles with manic overacting.)

So what about those massive battles? Well, del Toro takes his time getting to the kick-off, but once it begins, it rarely ends; the whole second half of the film is one big demolition derby. (Not unlike the argument leveled against Superman's wanton destruction at the end of MAN OF STEEL, it seems worth noting that the Jaegers often commit as much building-busting mayhem as the monsters they are fighting.) What's somewhat disappointing about these sequences, however, is the way they're shot: almost all of the good stuff takes place at night, in the rain, so sometimes it's a little difficult (literally) to really enjoy the circus. Del Toro is a good action director; he's not obsessed with cutting every two seconds, generally holding on the conflict long enough for us to get an idea of the geography and physicality of the fights. But it's just so dark that I yearned for the skies to clear so we could fully take it all in. Add to that, there's a climactic action scene that takes place underwater, which is cool in theory, but not necessarily in practice; the visuals in this case are also murky and grim. (The 3D does not help with this.)

But I'm not here just to be a negative Nelly: Credit must go to ILM for their remarkable CGI; when their work is allowed to be fully revealed, it's wonderful to behold. (Like the images inside the gigantic "Shatterdome", the location where the Jaegers are kept and repaired; there's a whole world within this place.) There are many fantastic details in both machine and monster; del Toro is well-known for his ability to fill every frame with interesting visual information, and he doesn't disappoint with PACIFIC RIM. The director also successfully peaks our interest in the Kaiju, giving them keen animalistic behavior, from the way they surround their opponents to the way they thrash and convulse when they're being defeated. There are some really cool ideas hinted at with these monsters, and if a sequel does indeed come about, I'd like to spend some time just with them to see what they're like when they're not being thrown across the ocean.

And yes, there's just something about seeing a robot use a ship to beat down a creature that brings a smile to my face. The Jaeger and the Kaiju tumbling about in Hong Kong is easily my favorite scene.

I don't flat-out dislike PACIFIC RIM, just as I don't blame del Toro for tossing his vivid dreams onto the screen every chance he gets. The movie is more or less brainless, but not soulless, and if the little kid inside of you is able to ignore the stiffness of the human characters and the predictability of the story, you'll probably be more than happy to play in del Toro's backyard. I just wanted a little flesh-and-blood.

I had such a great time with this, I'd give it an 8 out of 10. It might look like canned food, but there are definitely times when canned food can taste absolutely delicious, and Guillermo del Toro has cooked up a storm. Clichs and stereotypes are in full effect (the Russian Jaeger pilots look like they stepped out of an 80s Cold War thriller) but somehow, this makes it all the more entertaining. Del Toro stated that he didnt want to make a super-brooding, super-dark, cynical summer movie

I thought the 3D was surprisingly effective as well.

I fully expected a bloated score like 9/10, as we've seen in the past for site-friendly movies like Man of Steel or Dark Knight Rises. I'm happy it actually was an honest review. I've seen Pacific Rim, and 6/10 is as high as I would go too.

What? This movie doesn't have wholly original characters with 2hrs of backstory!? But all of the Godzilla movies I've loved for years have incredible, memorable characters! I don't love those films simply because it's cool seeing giant monsters fight each other!!! I love them for the real, original, earnest drama! PASSSSSS!

But in all honesty, the characters in this film are no more hollow than 99% of summer blockbuster films. In fact, they ARE LESS hollow han most. So this criticism is a bit unfounded. This "hollow, shallow" critique is getting old. It's like the go to criticism when you're trying to knock a movie down a few pegs.

The critique isn't getting old, hollow, shallow movies are. I don't know about everybody else but if I don't give a damn about the characters then of what consequence is all the silly action?

Yeah but that doesn't mean 99% of summer blockbuster deserve anything better than a 6/10. Most of the recent blockbusters have been pretty bad movies with a lot of flash.

Couldn't of been said better. I agree look at man of steel. Action was amazing, Story was terrible, superman was pretty good though but when he played clark he just sucked at it. And lois don't even get me started. I can go on and on with all these movies and shitty characters. I never watch these kind of movies for characters, I go in for action and fun. If I want characters I'll put on a drama. People need to stop bashing this movie. Its something different if you bash it we will keep getting

All this and no mention of how unique this movie is this summer. It's not a goofy comedy, it's not a superhero movie, it's not some bullshit animated kids movie.... it's something completely different, ballsy, and fun, and that should at least warrant a little praise.

Plot Hole Holding me Back

It was not explained in this review as I was hoping it would be, but my biggest reason for probably not seeing this film in theaters is the fact that the pilots have to be inside the robot....WTF!! We can build giant robots but cannot come up with a wireless system of communication with them, hope they have a very good reason for this in the movie, but it sounds like they don't. Oh well logic is never a big part of a summer popcorn movie anyway.

Good point. I'd like this one answered: Why the fuck did we build multi-billion dollar robots at all when all they can do is punch things? A robot punch, of any size, can't remotely compete with the power of explosives, even before we get to atomic weaponry.

The film looks like a hell of a good time. Will be seeing this opening night in 3D and will be loving every minute of it.

The film just has too much talent and is visually striking for it not to be anything but a hell of a time. Can't wait.

Ratings

For me, rating movies is based on what the film is trying to do and how well it does it. If PR was trying to provide fully developed characters, and amazing storytelling, then a low score (not that 6/10 is low) would be applicable. But the movie is going for solid entertainment with some old school Kaiju fun (and new school cause Kaiju stuff is still happening). So PR ranks much higher in those terms for me, hell it's giant robots fighting Kaiju - I mean this either gets you pumped up or not -

I disagree with your assessment, cricker. The film felt very speedy and the two hours went by quite quickly. The exposition is easily only about 30-45 minutes, while the rest of the film is a massive beatdown that is well choreographed and easy to see. I found the fights to be incredibly fun and incredibly well made. There's never any shaky cam and you get a very good view of nearly every piece of action that goes on.

except that it takes about an hour and a half to get to the fights and then like EVERY review and posting has said you cant see anything barely happening and you know it will be even worse in 3D, so it would be nice to offset that with like a story or character development, maybe he is saving for one of the hundred projects he will never make.

I still want to see it. Actually, I've been surprised how much I want to see this movie, as city-destruction isn't really my thing normally. I don't know if it's because I want to support del Toro, because it's not based on action figures or comic books, or because those trailers are just really well cut-together.

This year critics opinions mean very little in terms of Box Office.

The fans have spoken and every film they didn't like the look of has tanked and the must sees have been seen. Regardless of what the critics say.
I'd go and see this if no one spoke throughout the film and it was just carnage for 2 hours. I will see this no matter what this review says and if every other review I saw gave it a 1.

While I agree with part of this review, the action here was so lengthy and well done, that nothing else mattered to me. It was a dream come true to see all the kind of action I had enjoyed in anime and games come to life. That's the kind of movie this is and it succeeds wholeheartedly. This is a movie where Del Toro knew exactly what he was doing, cliches and all. On the topic of cliches, while I realize that we have been inundated with them and most hate them, I think that's a staple of this

It felt to me like Del Toro was taking each and every staple of the kaiju/mecha genres and bringing them to life, and really, I've never seen anything like Pac Rim on screen before. Transformers may come the closest, but even that doesn't hold a candle to this film. My only hope is that we do, indeed, get a sequel and that it tightens up on areas that need tightening and gives us action a little closer to true mecha genre stuff.

YOU SUCK DEL TORO

This is supposed to be del Toro's amazing childhood fantasy finally brought to life?.....don't make me luagh. The most unoriginal idea ever. I'd rather watch Mega Shark vs. Whatever on the ScyFy channel. I had a robot and monster action figure growing up too who fought all the time. This movie will make money and maybe produce a sequel but del Toro has sold out faster than Johnny Depp. If you pay to see this it will be the first of many piles of crap he squats out on your chest. God bless.

I predicted this movie wouldn't do well at the box office. As I said before, it doesn't interest me. It's how non-Transformers fans did not care to see those movies...well that's how I feel about Pacific Rim. Looks fun, but I won't pay to see it.

Not a bad review...

It's definitely what I expect to read in a review for a movie like this. I just figure the kickass action scenes, beautiful artwork GDT created, and the fact that its a semi original story would merit a little higher score. High scores isn't really Mr. Walkuski's thing though. He's a low baller through and through.

Reviewers a dipshit.

How in the blue hell did you expect this to be a deep personal human drama? A giant monster movies is best when it's about the giant fucking monsters moron! That's why cloverfield and monsters sucked scales the monsters were barely footnotes in there own films. The new superman worked because of the destruction, what did expect from maniaclly superpowered soldiers, that they would play nice and not harm civilians? Joblo Movie critics have become art house posers these days.

Cracks Me Up

Review was good, movie looks silly. I neither love nor hate Del Toro, but reading all of the Del Toro Defenders' comments just cracks me up. Movie is a pretty lame idea in reality, just because its Del Toro the Great does not make it great. This exact movie could have Bay's name on it and I'd bet all those in favor would suddenly be giving thumbs down all over the place. Personally I doubt this will top Lone Ranger opening weekend. Other than those on this site I don't know anyone else

Some guys here complained that they don't need flesh-out characters in a big monster movie. I wholly disagree. I love incredible creatures fight on screen too, but I wouldn't care anything about them if there were no interesting characters in the film.
That's why I loved DelToro's own Hellboy movies: plenty of monster fights yet very cool (even loveable) characters. Even the villain in HB2 was three dimensional!

Personally, if the only people Berge hired were a bunch of nerds who orgasm over a movie like this, I'd find the site worthless. I'm glad to see someone give a broader critique than "oh look, del Toro, robots and monsters....10/10 fer sure!"

Called it.

Actually I predicted 7/10. It looks to be too generic of a plot to be anything memorable. They are trying to sell tickets based on the gundam vs godzilla aspect of it but it looks so bland and the effects are nothing special either. I sadly want to see the Asylum version because odds are it will somehow be more entertaining than this.

On the bright side...I am not anywhere near as hyped up to see this as I was Man Of Steel... so knowing me, I'll end up enjoying this more.

This movie is a bit more coherent in its city destruction. It doesn't become overload.

Thank you for NOT going 10/10!

It's a redeeming quality of the site to see a movie like this (monsters, robots, blockbuster size and del Toro) not get the immediate fan-boy-gasm 10/10. Thank you, Eric.

I think the review is about right.

It's fun. It's cartoony and the characters aren't very deep. And the story is surprisingly straightforward. I was hoping for something twistier.

I'd strangely compare it to Kill Bill. It has this feel of "This is not real. It is a Story". A moving graphic novel.

I saw Pacific Rim last night, and I thought it was a blast. The acting is so-so, but the story is fresh, and the action is top notch. This movie is a solid 8 out of 10. Joblo is hating for no reason on this one.

A 6? Really, dude?

Just saw it and it's at least a 7. At least. I agree with the characters being cardboard cutouts of 80's cartoon characters, and all the sub-stories being pointless and lazy. But, and this is a big BUT, the movie revolved around monsters vs robots and on that front it delivered. It delivered better than any of the Transformers films and was original on a number of levels. It paid homage to the monsters of old while making them look new and real. The visuals alone warrant a solid 6 on their own.

Put Idris Elba, Charlie Day, and Ron Perlman in the mix and you're looking at a 7 at least, 8.5 at best.

It was fun. I'd say it's in my Top 3 this year. The CGI was amazing and the battles were intense and coherent. It severely lacks depth in terms of storytelling and character development, but delivers solid goods on every other level.

THIS MOVIE MADE MY DICK ROCK HARD!

It was nuts. It's a big ball of RA! RA! RA! Cheering you feel deep in your chest. Felt so damn good at the end. It IS a live-action cartoon, in the absolute best way possible. Well worth even seeing in 3D. Hell this movie wasn't even filmed in 3D and it was ridiculously good looking. AND TAKE YOUR KIDS, KIDS WILL EAT THIS UP! There's no sex, hardly any swearing, not very bloody, and plenty of monster goo.
And as far as people critiquing the story, this is the first one, this is where you play

And as far as people critiquing the story, this is the first one, this is where you play safe, this is all feel-good "we can do anything if we put our minds together" (LITERALLY). It's the sequel where you can go all out fucking balls swinging. This is what the Lone Ranger should have been like, the best kind of fun.

Wow, low trollish score

Seen this tonight, loved it. Ignore nitpicks, these films are here to entertain, and it delivered in aces. Let the fecal throwing apes chuck away, just like with Man of Steel, I believe audience enjoyment outranks box office totals, tracking, and other window licking crap only studio pencil pushers give a crap about.

Wait a sec...

And this guy gave Fast 6 an 8/10? That movie had the same problems according to him. Bad acting, weak script, and thin plot. For Shame Eric, for shame.

Saw it this morning. Maybe 6 to 8 people in the theater in addition to my friend and I.

The action was out of this world good. My only beef is w/ how close-up a lot of it was. Got lost in what I was supposed to be seeing here & there. The constant night and rain scenes didn't help much either. Still, epic battles. I was grinning ear to ear so hard I could feel it.

I'm surprised by how much the non-action didn't work for me. I LOVE Del Toro, but MAN, I really think he needs help in

Perfect Review for this film!

Eric Walkuski, you did the movie justice with your review. I was surprised to see the backlash against you in the comments. I so very wanted to love this movie, but you were absolutely correct that the film lacked depth and the characters were blah. The action sequences were awesome but the rain/night was definitely a bother.
