Review: Pacific Rim (Chris Bumbray's take)

Jul. 12, 2013by: Chris Bumbray

PLOT: When a race of giant monsters, dubbed “Kaiju” arise from the sea, mankind's only hope are the “Jaegers”, giant robots operated by two or three pilots who are linked by a psychic connection called “The Drift”. When his brother is killed during a drift, pilot Raleigh (Charlie Hunnam) drops out of the Jaeger program, only to be brought back into the fold five years later by his former commander, Stacker (Idris Elba), as the Jaegers face an apocalyptic standoff with the Kaiju.

REVIEW: Sometimes people just opt to dump on a movie for no reason. PACIFIC RIM- despite coming from genre maestro Guillermo Del Toro- has been all but christened the next big flop by the press, despite the fact that the reviews have been overwhelmingly positive (and not just from the fanboys either). Especially funny are the reviews that call the premise “dumb” or “unbelievable”. I mean come-on people! Isn't this supposed to be fantasy? And why are superheroes and alien robots defending humanity perfectly acceptable, while giant monsters from the sea are not? What's the criteria for “good” fantasy, and “bad” fantasy?

People are seemingly looking for any reason to pick on PACIFIC RIM, but do yourselves a favour. Forget all the negative press and stories about its budget, tracking, etc. The only important question is whether or not PACIFIC RIM is entertaining. I'm here to tell you that not only is the answer to that a definite “hell yes” but PACIFIC RIM is just about the most fun I've had at the movies since SKYFALL. As much as I liked STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS and MAN OF STEEL, I think PACIFIC RIM has them beat.

The best thing about PACIFIC RIM is that it's just so much damn fun. From the time this sucker started I had an ear-to-ear grin on my face that was so wide my cheeks are still killing me hours later. You have to hand it to Del Toro for jumping right into the insanity with the opening teaser, with it only taking him about five minutes to (perfectly) set up the Kaiju, and the rockstar-like Jaeger pilots. From there del Toro plunges the film into wall-to-wall action and insanity, with the first of many sea battles pitting Hunnam's Jaeger against Kaiju that could have emerged from a sixties Toho movie-albeit much cooler.

Del Toro has said that this is the movie he dreamed about making when he was twelve years old, and sure enough there's a generation of kids that are going to absolutely go gonzo for this, provided that their parents are cool enough to take them. As for the rest of us, PACIFIC RIM just might make you feel like you're twelve again, and NOT because it makes you'll feel stupid, but rather that it's just a film infused with so much joy on the behalf of Del Toro and his crew that you can't help but get caught up in it.

“But wait a second Chris,” some will be saying. “How is the story?” Again I say this- it's a movie about giant robots fighting giant monsters! Don't go in expecting social commentary, or twists and turns (this isn't ZERO DARK THIRTY people, nor is it supposed to be). It's all about the spectacle, and in a summer filled with eye candy, I guarantee you none have come close to what PACIFIC RIM offers. The gorgeous lensing by DP Guillermo Navarro, which is best appreciated in IMAX 3D, is comparable to Wally Pfister's work with Nolan, or what Roger Deakins did for SKYFALL. It's striking and for once the 3D really adds to the film, although I'd admit that the fact that I saw this on true 70MM on a massive IMAX screen certainly helped, as that's really the ideal way to watch it. This is also a case where every penny of the obviously hefty budget has found it's way on screen, and this is the first time in awhile that CGI has really knocked my socks off.

As for the performances, here's the thing. Everyone does exactly what they're supposed to. Del Toro's got a big heart, and just like he brought heart to HELLBOY he does the same for PACIFIC RIM. Nowhere is that more apparent than the idea of “drifting” with it only working if the two people involved actually have an emotional connection. This means the best pilots are usually parents and their (grown) children, people that are married or in love, or siblings. Giving us characters that care about each other makes us care about them. Some critics are picking on Charlie Hunnam, but I don't really get this as to me he was totally charismatic, and made a likable hero (not to mention that fact that the ladies LOVE the guy). Our leading female heroine Rinko Kikuchi is absolutely adorable, and the bond that springs up between her and Hunnam feels well-thought out and never tacked on. Meanwhile, Idris Elba is a full-on movie-star as their tough commander with a heart of gold (natch), while Ron Perlman shows up later in the film to steal every scene he's in as an unscrupulous black-marketeer comic relief Charlie Day (toned down) has to turn to in an hour of need.

No matter how much I slather over PACIFIC RIM, many are still not going to give it a shot as for some reason the premise seems to offend people. Again, I ask, how is this any dumber than any other tentpole movie that's already come out this summer? People are too cynical, and this isn't a movie for cynics. Del Toro's only goal here is to entertain and make you feel like a kid again. For me, he did exactly that. I really think Del Toro is a master and no matter what happens with PACIFIC RIM, I hope this is just the start of a long-line of hugely ambitious films to have his stamp on them. He's a modern master, and there's more imagination and skill in any of this movie's individual set-pieces than in many other wildly successful movies I've seem lately. If any tent-pole actioner ever deserved to shatter the box office, this is it.

Extra Tidbit: Schmoes, we can't let GROWN UPS 2 beat this at the box office!

"how is this any dumber than any other tentpole movie"

I'm sorry - did you give Battleship and the Transformers movies high scores as well? Those are brainless spectacles made only to entertain but get shit on simply because the directors don't have a following the way Del Toro does.

That being said - I am seeing it tomorrow morning and am very excited, I am a big fan of his work. I'm just getting sick of the internet and critics giving certain filmmakers a pass and criticizing others

But unlike Battleship & Transformers, Pacific Rim has characters. Not just people to get pushed along by exposition, but actual characters who drive the story forward. Unlike Battleship & Transformers, Pacific Rim carries dramatic weight. And last but not least, unlike Battleship & Transformers, Pacific Rim has a rhythm & flow to the story.

Sure Pacific Rim isn't breaking new ground as far as story goes, but it will make you care. It isn't just a brainless spectacle. It's a spectacle with

Bob, nowhere in this review or any other positive review I've read has the acting been considered exceptional. If anything, it's been regarded as wooden and predictable but excused because the reviewer has already decided they want to like the film because of the director. If Michael Bay had directed Idris Elba's "rallying cry" it would have been regarded as redundant and boring - but since it is Del Toro it surprisingly "fits the vibe of the film and made me feel like I was listening to

Please let me know what makes this smarter than the other films mentioned - especially considering Del Toro himself has admitted it's the movie he wanted to make since he was 12.

Reasons why PACIFIC RIM is better than BATTLESHIP and TRANSFORMERS
1. It's not bloated
2. It has heart.
3. It has imagination.
4. You can actually make out what's happening on screen.
5. The people involved with the movie are genuinely trying to make something good, not just a cash-grab.
6. Gorgeous cinematography.
7. 2D characters- sure. But characters that still make sense and that you'll care about.
et cetera. Most important though- because it's good, and those other movies AREN'T!

Vehicles turning into Robots that fight each other isn't imaginative?

Again, I have not seen Pacific Rim and I am not judging whether it's good or not. But I think people need to admit when a review is just playing favouritism rather than being honest. I personally have nothing against Bumbray's reviews as some others on here seem to, but I think this time he's appeasing the GDT fans. Both Bob Loblaw and Bumbray, in your responses to Sigismundo, neither of you were able to provide

Both Bob Loblaw and Bumbray, in your responses to Sigismundo, neither of you were able to provide anything specific about how Pacific Rim is better than Transformers or Battleship. How did PR characters drive the story compared to [link] How does PR carry dramatic weight and where does Transformers fail? What rhythm and flow is present in PR that isn't there in Transformers? And Chris, you say unlike Transformers you can actually make out what's happening on screen in PR, that's the one criticism I've read from every review so far, whether it's good or bad. How does this have imagination, which is just taking ideas from Japan vs. Transformers which was adapting a kids toy to the big screen? I'm not saying anyone's opinion is wrong, but no one on here is making any logical point to defend their position, it's annoying to read.

It is probably good. But doubt that a movie about monsters and giant robots really deserve 9/10.

Will see it in cinemas though.

But don't get me wrong, I enjoy these type of movies very much

CGI shit crashing into each other for two hours

It's completely soulless and asinine. But that's ok because del Toro made it.

Can't wait to see this site shit all over Transformers 4 next year.

Always has to be a hater. And yes this made be CGI but this is actually CGI done fuckin beyond well. And at least you can see the detail and all unlike transformers where everything goes by in a blink of an eye. I don't mind transformers films either. But this is way beyond and fuckin way better then transformers will ever be.

Yeah, every fight scene takes place in the dark, in the rain or underwater. Real clear. You're right, though. It's unfair of me to compare this to Transformers. The first Transformers movie actually had some character development in it, unlike the cardboard cut-outs in this movie.

As a fan of the Transformers movies, I can honestly say those fight sequences are hard to follow, mainly because most of the bots look nondescript. In PR that is not the case. Even though the fight scenes happen at night they are easy to follow and enjoy.

I haven't seen this film yet, but what I read most is that the movie is fun. That's all it is and all it ever intended to be. There is a difference in a Del Toro putting out a fun movie because he wants to appeal to genre and younger fans, and a Michael Bay or Brett Ratner trying desperately to make a movie fun because it is at best all they are capable of.

what do you mean "yield the punch of an atomic bomb"? do you mean they should have made the robots punch harder? cuz there are limits to what you can build in a hurry to save the world. Or do you mean they should have nuked the monsters? cuz thats just plain dumb to do in the middle of a populated area. I'd rather have a mech topple a dozen buildings and squash a thousand people and have to rebuild than to melt a million people and irradiate San Diego for 500 years. Please explain.

No, I mean "why did humanity build the robots at all?" What possible use do they have? As weapons they are likely hundreds of thousands of times more expensive than an atomic bomb and hundreds of thousands of times weaker. Why do they exist at all??

And don't tell me we built them JUST to fight monsters, because if monsters appeared one day out of the blue, the last thing we'd do is begin a decades-long government bureaucracy to make robots to punch monsters.

And if we knew the monsters were coming with, say 10 years advance notice, then why in the hell did the combined genius of all people on Earth decide that building super robots was the best technological solution we could come up with?

So monsters from another dimension invading earth while their only defense is with giant robots, and yet you draw the line because a bomb wasn't built instead? Is it logically sound yes, but it wouldn't make for a good movie.

This is probably a legitimate question. It may or may not be addressed in the film in the context of this particular story, but I see some possible answers.

First, that it's just an expression of fantasy wish making, the imaginations of young boys dreaming of giant robots, and nothing more than that. A fairy tale if you will.

Second, it could be just a matter of building things progressively bigger and better. Right now, the Japanese are really focusing on making robots a reality.

But as with all things, folks want to build something bigger, better, faster, etc.

Third, would be mainly one of terrain concerns. A legged robot, particularly one of larger size, would be able to traverse terrain that conventional wheeled vehicles and tracked vehicles like tanks wouldn't be able to go.

But these are just my guesses.

So far, I've not seen anything much besides "you have no imagination", which is a bullshit retort. I love a good fantasy movie, and it's not "scientific feasibility" that is my problem, but *LOGIC*.

When were the robots built? For what purpose? Some logic that explains HOW we get to the monsters vs robots would be nice...

Spoiler
If you want to know troll, it took 6 days to kill one with our planes and tanks, plus each one they send at us adapts to our weapons.

From a moviegoer who isn't a fan of Del Toro...

..I cannot deny the fact that this movie is awesome. The visuals blew me away and it delivered the goods in terms if high-octane, epic action scenes and just mesmerizing cinematography. It's a visual feast that surpasses anything Michael Bay has ever done. Are the characters flat and severely lacking depth? Definitely. Did I care for any of the sub-stories? Hell no. Are Ron Perlman and Charlie Day awesome? F*ck yes. Overall, this movie warrants another 3, maybe 4 viewings on the big screen.

Just got back from it as well!

I'd lean more in the 7/10 range just due to the very, very predictable nature of the movie. This site's first review was pretty accurate in saying that we can plot out everything that's going to happen well before it does. I kind of wish the trailers were less revealing. Seeing that ship being used as a club would have been 1000% cooler if I didn't already know it was going to happen.

this review reeks of trying to please other schmoes on this site who overpraise Del Toro. I stopped reading after the second paragraph as this review seems about as fake as the Kardashians! It's easily no better than any Transformers movie & if directed by Bay himself or even a McG would be crushed to death on this site.

While I agree with your point about overpraise for directors (Tarantino, Soderbergh come to mind) its a fun movie, with good characters, a good story and amazing effects. I really liked Terminator Salvation, and said the same thing on this site, and got thrashed for it. I'd give it a 7.5-8 out of 10. Check it out and have fun!

But that's the point 02ghost. THe movie is probably fine for what it is, but the reviewers on this site never point out what sets this apart from the last. Personally I like most movies. I agree with you on Terminator 4, I really really like Lone Ranger, probably the most this summer. But these pro BLOGGERS, can't decide on their own if they like a movie, unless it has a certain director everyone else likes attached to it.

I'm just sayin...

Just for the record, I enjoyed Battleship, Transformers 1-3 and and now Pacific Rim...summer movies are supposed to be fun, leave the serious stuff for the fall/winter season. There's always gonna be fanboys/fangirls that ride on their favourite directors...hell I don't even have a problem with Michael Bay like most people do. I just hope films like Pacific Rim get an awesome box office so we can see more films like this and less dreck like Grown Ups 2 (which I haven't seen yet but I didn't

I don't know if Pacific Rim is good or not; that isn't the point. the point is the criteria used to justify your enjoyment has no merit.

Chris Bumbray is echoing what other movie reviewers, like the late great Roger Ebert have said: you judge a movie on what it's trying to accomplish, not how it compares to what you call "good filmmaking." Someone who goes into PACIFIC RIM expecting something as deep as ZERO DARK THIRTY are missing the point.

Guillermo del Toro wanted to make a fun thrill ride, the kind of movie a 12-year-old would love. The only question is: did he succeed in that mission? For Chris, the answer is yes. I

exactly, you go into Pacific Rim expecting it excels at what it is supposed to be. that doesn't mean an absence of good dialogue or characters (I am not saying Pacific Rim is lacking in those) because a movie aimed at 12 year old's doesn't equate to a movie that has bad characters and dialogue. Zero Dark Thirty is completely irrelevant to the discussion, and attempting to claim that it is good just because it isn't trying to be that other movie doesn't address whether the movie fails at what

that is simply a rationalization to justify why you want to like a movie, not a review of the movie on its own merits.

no, that isn't what we are arguing. we are arguing whether a movie is good if it has poor characters, dialogue, suspense or any other quality people associate with what may dictate whether it is a good movie simply because it isn't trying to a deep picture like Zero Dark Snoozy.

Decent but with Problems

Just got back from seeing it too. I thought the characters were fine. I enjoyed this movie more than Man of Steel. My gripe with the movie was that it was hard to see what was happening in a lot of the fight scenes. Most of the shots were up so close. I would have liked it more if they had shown more of the clashes from a distance. Also by flip-flopping from the inside of the jaegers to the outside this too contributed to visual confusion. Glad you liked it this much, Bumbray. I wouldn't quite give a 9, but it is a well-made movie, exhilarating entertainment and sufficiently different from your average bloated, production line sci fi action flick (e.g.: Battleship). There were lots of familiar story and design elements, but del Toro made them all work together for a smashing good time.

Saw it this morning. Maybe 6 to 8 people in the theater in addition to my friend and I.

The action was out of this world good. My only beef is w/ how close-up a lot of it was. Got lost in what I was supposed to be seeing here & there. The constant night and rain scenes didn't help much either. Still, epic battles. I was grinning ear to ear so hard I could feel it.

I'm surprised by how much the non-action didn't work for me. I LOVE Del Toro, but MAN, I really think he needs help in

As I sit here during the credits...

I gotta say... I am not a fan. I went into the flick indifferent toward it(the first time all summer for a movie). I felt no emotional connection, was only taken by Charlie day, and realize now I checked my phone probably 6-7 times.

I don't feel let down, I just feel not surprised. Ugh.

I'm going tonight !

And after all this hype, it better be awesome.
A lot of the reviews include a comment like "Fuck cynical people !" . It's quiet funny when it comes from reviewers that are 90% of the time the cynical ones (Not looking at you, Chris).
I mean, aren't people a bit cynical when they can't enjoy Live Free or Die Hard ? Crystal Skull ? Superman Returns ? When you see Superman as a peeping stalker, aren't you cynical ?
Pacific Rim better not have anything cheesy or ridiculous. I hope it doesn't

I'm the least cynical fanboy that you'll meet, I watched that piece of turd Die Hard 5 until the end, even though I wanted to cry 15 minutes in. I hope I'll have a blast tonight !

I haven't seen this yet so I don't know. But here's what I've gathered from reading just about every good and bad review from this movie. A summed up review.
"If this exact same movie had been made by Micheal Bay, word for word, scene for scene, it would be total horse piss. However we as a community of movie goers have a raging hard on for Guillermo Del Toro, and want him to succeed so bad I like this movie now."

I mean really on this site especially people get their panties in a twist when anything gets reused. And judging on the trailers and plot, this bring nothing new to the over done giant robot movie genre. Ever trailer looks so bland, and the action will be as over done as Transformers 2. This will only be as good as Transformers 1, and not as good as Transformers 3. Deal with it. Not saying it won't be fun though. Just wanted to make a point about how we single out directors. And I hate 95% of Chris's reviews.

Except you're wrong because this blows Transformers out of the water. This is so much bigger and better. There's a reason we get behind DT on a movie like this: it's all him. There is no one, and I do mean NO ONE, else who would bring a movie like this to life, and that includes Michael Bay.

I really have to agree with what you said. I haven't seen it either, but I find it hard to get an honest review for this movie. People who like it, say they're liking it "because it's Guillermo Del Toro being Guillermo Del Toro, and everyone needs to like that". And you're absolutely right, if this movie was made by Michael Bay, everyone would be shitting all over it. I'm not saying that it's going to be a bad movie, it looks like it could be cool, but I have zero [link] for this movie.

I´m pretty sure Michael Bay couldn´t make such a movie. Sorry but Transformers was all about badly shot action scenes, silly jokes, unlikeable characters and nice looking cars. Just judging from the trailers (I´m gonna see this one as soon as hit hits europe), this one is head and shoulders above the stuff from McG, Bay and Co. If it comes to visuals, to action and to pure gleeful imagination.

You should've watched The Man of Steel, or Iron Man 3, Or White House Down, or The Lone Ranger, or Fast 6, or Star Trek, or This is the End, or World War Z, or Oblivion, or Pain and Gain. Those where all a very fun time at the movies. Maybe it's just you that cynical and depressing. The Lone Ranger was a fantastic summer movie. Light hearted, exciting, fun, funny. Perfect summer movie.

Fuck the Haters

I got back from the film earlier today and it's fantastic. IT does everything right that so many blockbusters do wrong. The idea that so many hate on it is baffling to me. It deserves a good box office and so does GDt.

It Delivers!

Checked it out last night...well worth the cash! Enjoyed the hell out of it. I thought Hunnam was solid, and yeah not sure why he is getting picked on. Perlman, Elba, and Kinkuchi were all great. My only knock would be it would have been cool to see a battle in the daytime, but I felt you could easily see the fights at night. I think the daylight would have lent more detail to the Kaiju and Jaegars. But other than that....bring on a sequel!

Giant Robots, giant monsters, Guillermo Del Toro at the helm, what's not to like? It's a film about giant robots fighting giant monsters. I was not expecting Hamlet, I was expecting to be entertained by tapping to the same sense of wonderment I had when I was 10! I got that with this film!

It was fun.

I had a good time with this flick. We all know the story, we all know the characters, but Del Toro gave it his visual flair, his little touch of magic, that made it good. I'll admit, I was hoping for a bit more than what I got from the man who gave us Pan's Labyrinth, but it seems he saves his more deep fare for foreign languages. I was a little let down by some of the troupes he pulled (big rousing speech, obnoxiously patriotic control room cheering, not unexpected but wholly unsupported

Though is someone is gonna deliver a cliched pre-mega-battle speech, Idris Alba has the voice for it. I'd lean more towards 7/10, better than most movies of this genre, but less than stellar. I'd watch it again, that's for sure.

exactly! I don't always agree with Bumbray. But these were pretty much my thoughts on seeing this movie, verbatim. I really don't get the hate being slung at this film. It isn't even trolling; it's just seething hatred for anything that has hype. I'm so sick of that.

it's a popcorn movie!

It's a movie about Monsters from another dimension invading earth while humanity's only defense is with giant robots. Quit bitching about insignificant plot points!

As for Del Toro getting a pass while others get trampled on (battleship, TF), Ya the world's a fickle place, we're all hypocrites. Deal with it.

As for the movie, saw it last night, was it stupid? Ya, was the action solid? Hell yeah! Was I entertained? Absofrigginlutely!

This is the only summer blockbuster I'm interested in seeing this year. It seems like it's the only thing that isn't a remake, reboot, or a heavily retreaded concept like World War Z. Can't wait to see it!

Apparently you've never heard of Transformers, Real Steel, Cloverfield, Super 8, or what was that one movie.... you know, that one i thing a few people saw it....
Oh yeah it was called Godzilla.

Apparently no one can respond to someone they may disagree with without childish snark anymore.

In any case, Transformers is a robot movie, but there's a significant difference between the robots of Transformers and say the piloted robots of Battletech, which these robots seem to resemble. Real Steel was a robot movie, but these were remotely controlled robots, not giant piloted robots. Godzilla, Cloverfield and Super 8 were giant monster movies, but not with multiple monsters, and not

Godzilla, Cloverfield and Super 8 were giant monster movies, but not with multiple monsters, and not pitting them against giant piloted robots, except perhaps versions of Godzilla Vs. MechaGodzilla.

So while Pacific Rim may be inspired by some of these properties, probably mostly just Battletech, Godzilla, and Ultraman really, it's not a carbon copy retread of many things that came before like World War Z, or a remake or reboot of an existing property like Man of Steel or Lone Ranger.

You may now take your idiot snarky foot out of your mouth. I give you permission.

I think he was speaking specifically about the 2013 Summer Movie season. Don't be so negative DeakenBlack, it's just a movie, no need to get your panties in a twist over it.

Oh so it's exactly like Neon Genesis then. The one where giant monsters come to earth and humans have to make giant robot to fight them. Or is it not like that either? As for my feet, they are firmly planted on the ground so bite me alright.

It may share some similarities with Neon Genesis but again, that was out when, in the mid-90s? So it's roughly 20 years since? And it's Japanese. It's a concept that hasn't yet been beaten to death.

It's not a tired retread like World War Z, which is essentially yet another zombie movie, of which we get what, 2 or 3 every summer? 5 the rest of the year? And hundreds more out of our film schools?

Not trying to be negative, and I'm sure it's fine, I'm just so tired of the hype, and everyone saying this is the most original movie ever. I like a lot of remakes, reboots, re-tellings, adaptations, and so on. Just stop with the oh so original thing....
Also like the Power Rangers.

BEST. MOVIE.

in a long ass time. You want giant Kaiju's wrecking havoc and robots to save humanity where people actually freaking die, and their are no heros sometimes. Well this is that movie folks, i have to say, the trailers made it seem not realistic at all, but damn it surly feel's real, its unlike anything you ever seen. Yes you might think you've seen it all before because thats what the trailers make it seem. But the trailers do it no justice at all. There is no good way to market this film either

There is no good way to market this film either expect saying ASS. KICKING. ROBOTS VS GIANT FUCKING MONSTERS>

people who bitch and moan in the neg reviews saying theres no character development are clearly not thinking straight I've seen alot of heart and soul in these characters, unlike recent superhero films where I felt not a single ounce of respect towards the characters here you can relate to each one in a certain way.

Lady's and gentlemen this is our monster movie, I kno JJ started it with clover, but this movie this is the movie we've been crying for, for a long, long time. this is americas answer to the Kaiju films that japan has been putting out with TOHO. This is our time to shine and thank god we have del torro to do this for us. I hope this movie does well in the BO and we get plenty more pacific rim movies or maybe even different stand alone films with a Kaiju or something. When this movie was goin on all I wanted to do was fine the nearest toy's r us and run in and buy up all the Kaiju toys they have an all the Jaegers as well. I've never ever smiled this much during a movie in a long time.

And its actually pretty intense and scary in some parts too which is hard to come by in movies like this.

It's safe to say the summer has now arrived. Lets see what movie can beat this.

Thank you once again del torro for a wonderful amazing film and bringing me back to my childhood.

Now excuse me I am going to soak in more of Pacific rim. And maybe even sit down and watch some old godzilla films :)

I'm glad this is getting better reviews, although none of them would have prevented me from seeing it. Ever since the first trailer me and all my friends have been dying to see this, screw the haters!

I have never wanted a movie to fail more in my life

So let's get this straight. The monsters adapt to everything we throw at them: bullets, missiles, bombs, etc. So knowing this, the world comes together and decides to put everything into a program that will take a minimum of several decades to complete. And the only thing the giants robots will be able to do that conventional weapons can't do is punch. And it doesn't occur to anyone that if a creature can adapt to bone and flesh shattering explosives that it will also quickly adapt to being

And the only thing the giants robots will be able to do that conventional weapons can't do is punch. And it doesn't occur to anyone that if a creature can adapt to bone and flesh shattering explosives that it will also quickly adapt to being punched, so maybe investing a half century into this program isn't the best use of time and resources? Also, if all the monsters coming through the portal are all 300 feet tall, then what's the logic of building a robot the EXACT SAME HEIGHT? If you have the technology to build a 300 foot robot, you can build a 400 foot robot and then it makes more sense to overpower them with size, cause you know, that works so well in the animal kingdom. This is the worst logic of any movie ever. It can't crash and burn fast enough for me.

Drexell

Dude- who cares? Honestly. Why does it have to make sense? I'll give you an example. When Howard Hawks was making The Big Sleep with Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, his writers, THE William Faulkner and Leigh Brackett, were confused by the Raymond Chandler novel it was based on. They couldn't figure out which character killed the guy that set the plot in motion. Chandler himself admitted he had no idea. So they never bothered explaining it in the movie, and you know what- NO ONE CARED! Not

Michael Bay movies aren't "a little silly". I mean, Ken Jeong's entire part in T3. WTF was that?
I actually don't mind Bay (I only reviewed the 3rd and I gave it a 6), but his movies have a certain contempt for their audience that I don't like. Also- there's a difference between silly and stupid.

Pretty weak argument Chris. I mean, nothing against Pacific Rim, it has potential to be a great movie and very well could be. But at the end of the day it's Monsters fighting Robots and people are defending the merits of this movie based on that fact, not everything in the movie needs to make sense because it's fantasy and people are really coming to see this for the sake of a Mech Robot beating down a Kaiju - and fair enough if that's the enjoyment you're seeking from this. But the same

But the same logic can be applied to Bay's Transformers movies - they're vehicles that transform into robots and all people really need to get from the movie is Optimus Prime beating down Megatron. So why should the expectation be that Bay needs to uplift his filmmaking qualities to provide more substance to the stories of Transformers (which started out as toys), but all GDT needs to do is make some really cool fight scenes and a few interesting plot threads and he's accomplished Filmmaking Gold? And your initial argument back to Drexell just fell apart on itself with your reply back to DeakenBlack, if all we're going to see Transformers for was robots fighting each other, than who cares about Ken Jeong's part in Transformers 3 - I don't think it really influences the story that much since I don't even remember him being in the movie.

Great Review

Agree about the pre-planned critical backlash, same thing happened with Man of Steel. Great flick, one of, if not the most entertaining film of the summer!

Pacific Rim is by far THE FILM of the summer. Awesome characters, story, dialogue, and the action/battle scenes were expertly directed and the whole movie itself was visually striking. I was in awe the entire time and soaked up every minute with a huge grin on my face. The imagination in this film and vision is extraordinary.

This movie makes you feel like a little kid again and does so in a fun, exciting, and intelligent way.

The dialogue was good? The characters were good? Bullshit

The characters had as much depth as those in Transformers/GI Joe. The dialogue may have well been cut verbatim from Top Gun, ID4,Transformers,and Godzilla. I'll give you the story and action, this film can't be matched, it's an amazing popcorn movie and a tremendous special effects/action flick but come on man, Show something other than another mindless/back of DVD "everything in this movie was perfect" review, you're better than

Well, just came back from the movies...

... and it was okay. And my God, I am so disappointed by the reviewers. Several hypocrites. If Pacific Rim was made by Michael Bay, it wouldn't be less dumb (except maybe for some dick jokes), but some reviewers would call it the new Battleship. Because character-wise, story-wise, it's the same. Pacific Rim just has better photography. HYPOCRITES. "I felt like a kid again" Give me a fucking break. Jurassic Park ? It's a shame to read some comparisons some dared to make. Hypocrites. I felt like

Guillermo Del Toro is a cool guy and a geek, but Pacific Rim is close to be his worst film. Hellboy has better characters and creatures and PLOT. How about some objectivity or just INTEGRITY ? HONESTY ? Today, I am disappointed by several people. Hypocrites.
